Hotels and Resorts Ramp Up Sustainability Efforts - The New York Times - 0 views

  • Hotels and resorts have started to act by ramping up efforts to reduce or eliminate completely their resource and energy consumption.
  • “Sustainability is more than energy conservation or recycling; it is about sustaining communities for the tourism product.”
  • While Marriott International and other large chains have promised to eliminate items that never fully decompose, like plastic straws, there is still a lot more work to be done.

  • The 114-room Conrad Bora Bora Nui resort in French Polynesia has developed 17 different underwater coral structures around its resort with the mindset to regenerate them. This is done using a “Biorock” technique (passing a low-voltage current through electrodes in the water) developed by the marine biologist Denis Schneider. The process is currently considered among the best ways to fight coral mortality.
  • With assistance of the tour leader, they help transplant the coral to the sea bottom to ensure it is able to continue its growth.
  • The resort also designed open-air rooms to allow natural breezes to cool the areas, eliminating the need for air-conditioning.
  • Solmar Hotels and Resorts in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, heats water (including in its pools) using photo-thermal panels.
  • this energy savings translates into fewer emissions into the atmosphere (or the equivalent of pulling 198 gasoline-run cars out of circulation).
  • The Spectator Hotel in Charleston, S.C., recently established a food waste diversion program where half-eaten food items such as fruit and pastries are put into a digester that turns them into reusable water.
  • The Palms Hotel & Spa in Miami Beach organizes three-hour-long beach cleanups every three months.
  •
Sustainability has been a primary focus for many hotel companies around the world. There are many initiatives that are being created other than your everyday recycling. Fairmont Mayakoba has implemented a tour in which guest can assist in the transplant of coral to help their growth. Hosteling International USA has also become the first of it's kind to develop a system that monitors shower to last at most seven minutes in it effort to conserve water. These are just some of the many ideas that are taking into effect to further progress sustainability within hotel operations.
  •
As guests are getting more environmentally friendly, being sustainable is an important aspect of hotel operations. Before they book a hotel, a lot of guests will look for or read about the hotel's social responsibility program. Hence, going green would bring in more revenue by attracting more guests.
  •
This article explains several ways that hotels and resorts are helping in the fight for sustainability. Some resorts have completely eliminated the use of air conditioning and other ways to get energy for running electricity. For example, the Jade Mountain resort in St. Lucia has designed all their rooms to be open-air rooms which allows for breezes to come through the rooms and ultimately cool down the rooms. This, in turn, eliminates the need for air-conditioning all together. Some hotels are even offering classes on how to live a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. Hotels and resorts have worked towards saving coral reefs, energy and water conservation, preserving food and re-purposing waste, and creating eco-minded communities.

MGM Resorts Betters Bandwidth with Enhanced Wi-Fi and Customization Capabilities - 3 views

  •
As a frequent visitor of Las Vegas, this article caught my attention. The article discusses the collaboration between MGM Resorts International and Cisco Systems and the development of a "high-density WI-FI system designed to enhance the guest experience". According to the article, MGM Resorts and Cisco have developed the highest-performing wireless LAN in the industry. Since Las Vegas is a top destination for tourists and business travelers, this technology will enhance the overall experience for a guest who is in town for either business or pleasure (or both!). Not only is the connectivity within this system is 30 percent faster, but it offers new programs and apps. There is a "state-of-the art wayfinding resort map" which offers point-by-point directions to various locations within the resort such as, restrooms, restaurants, and retail stores. I think this is a great idea. Las Vegas hotel/casino resorts can be quite overwhelming, especially for first-time guests.
  •
. For example, it can be difficult to locate the "all mighty" restroom among the bright lights of the slot machines and crowds of anxious gamblers. With this new WI-FI system in place, any MGM Resorts' guest with a wireless device has access to a quick reference guide right in the palm of their hand. Another interesting feature of this system is the assortment of restaurant wine, beer, cocktail, and dessert apps. These apps are designed to cater to food and wine enthusiasts. For example, wine lovers can "discover new wines, read reviews, rate the wine themselves, and even email wine labels". As a wine lover myself, I think this is a fantastic idea! On numerous occasions, I have found myself desperately searching for a pen and paper to write down the wine information or taking pictures of wine labels for future reference.
  •
Las Vegas is host to numerous conventions year-round. MGM Resorts' new WI-FI system also caters to convention attendees. Previously, their WI-FI system was only able to support roughly 4,000 concurrent users. Today, with the new and improved WI-FI, MGM Resorts now has the capability to support up to 120,000 concurrent users in Las Vegas. In addition, convention groups will find that the system is user-friendly and allows for network customization. It also includes location-based services and fast download/streaming speeds (for video presentations). MGM Resorts is clearly an industry leader. Most of their resorts, including Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, and The Mirage already have this enhanced WI-FI in place. Final installations to additional resorts will be complete in 2013.

Eco-Travel Might Be Cool With Floating Resort | Gadling.com - 0 views

  • In the future, eco-travelers may have a green cruise option in the Solar Floating Resort (SFR) concept. Powered entirely by solar photovoltaic panels that cover it like a skin, this sleek boat/resort/luxury submarine is just the sort of place Italian industrial designer Michele Puzzolante imagines. "Solar energy technologies such as photovoltaic panels could provide a third of the world's energy by 2060 if politicians commit to limiting global warming," says Puzzolante on her Solar Floating Resort website. Puzzolante's SFR relies entirely on non-polluting solar power and uses modular manufacturing techniques currently being used in the naval and automobile industries, kind of like LEGO pieces.
  •
Designed by Michele Puzzolante, the floating resort touts to be eco-friendly, self-sustaining and non-polluting. It will harness solar energy for power and use modular manufacturing methods as a way of building the resort more efficiently. I whole-heartedly agree with the theory of the floating resort as an alternative to the travel carbon footprint, but do not believe this particular model is going to make a huge difference. It is targeted toward the luxury market, only holds 6 people in the resort, and does not explain the full effects its presence will have on the ocean.

  • improves the awareness of those who are involved in the hospitality business regarding global warming and other natural phenomena affecting our environment
  • uplifts the quality of the hotels in Asean countries
  •
This article discusses the "Green Hotel" award that is presented every two years to Asean resorts. The purpose of this award is to bring awareness to hotels about the importance of being eco-friendly and preserving our environment. Thousands of hotels compete for this award based on criteria including water efficiency, air quality management, collaboration with local organizations and external communities. I personally love that collaborating with external communities is a criteria for this award because I find that to be very important. Well-known resorts should help smaller organizations and team up with them to show they care about those around them. Once of the recipients, Daluyon Beach and Mountain Resort, focused on protecting and sustaining the rich ecosystem surrounding their resort by constructing their resort using eco-ethical materials and placing priority in sustaining its environment-friendly atmosphere. The hope is for these awards to be an incentive to improve the tourism industry and to provide awareness to the hospitality industry regarding global warming and other important natural effects hotels are having on our environment. While it promotes healthy competition in the tourism industry, it also improves the quality of the hotels in Asean countries which in turn will lead to more tourism and financials for the country.

Honoring Earth Day: Eight Ways Hotels Are Helping to Protect the Environment - 2 views

  •
In regards to Module 2: Post a hospitality/tourism network, telecommunications, or green related article, I chose to post about a green related article and found an awesome article of "Eight Ways Hotels Are Helping To Protect The Environment." In honor of the past April 22's Earth Day, the article displayed the examples for some of the hotels in the United States that were committed to aid in preserving the environment for the hoteliers and guests alike to keep sustainability strong for the respective hospitality companies as well as travelers who are striving to travel with eco-friendly options. Located in Oahu, Hawaii, the Turtle Bay Resort is home to an on-property horse stable, tennis and golf courses, a 15 mile hiking/mountain biking trails, many health conscious classes such as fitness, wellness, and even a surf school. With its advantageous beach location, water adventures such as eco-kayaking, snorkeling, and swimming enable guests to view many of the natural resources, mammals, and endangered species that visit along the shores of the resort. With all of the above activities, it is crucial for this resort to take especially good care of the natural resources that benefit the resort by attracting guests. With that being said, the resort team members initiate beach cleanups every month for about 5 miles of the beach's shoreline. As well, back in 2009, the resort developed a Green Committee to plan and map out methods to reduce the resort's carbon footprint. Some examples of this was adding solar roof panels, convert 70% of the resort's lighting to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, initiated recycling for the entire resort, and changed cups utilized at the F&B outlets to environmental friendly options. Located in Leesburg, Virginia, The National Conference Center's food and beverage program partnered with local Virginia Farms to source their food from local farmers to enhance the consumer's yearning for the farm-to-table cuisine. For Earth Day, the company i

The Trump Organization Announces the Purchase of Miami's Legendary Doral Hotel & Countr... - 0 views

  • The Trump Organization plans to make a major investment in the resort and golf courses with the intention of restoring Doral to its former grandeur.
  • “When Doral first opened, it was considered the best resort in the world,” stated Donald J. Trump, chairman and president. “The combination of the property’s incredible location in the heart of Miami and our very significant investment in upgrading the resort will enable us to return Doral to its former glory if not surpass it. When completed, Doral will be the finest resort and golf club in the country.”
  • “Our ability to create value through the development process combined with the strength of our brand and our unsurpassed hotel and golf management capabilities make us the ideal owner of this iconic asset,”

  • Earlier this month, TRUMP HOTEL COLLECTION announced it had been selected by the U.S. General Services Administration as part of an exhaustive and competitive RFP process to be the developer of Washington, D.C.’s The Old Post Office, the most sought-after hotel development opportunity in the country.
  •
It was recently brought to my attention that Donald Trump has expanded his portfolio with the $150 million dollar purchase of Miami's Doral Hotel & Country Club. I was casually watching the coverage of the 2012 World Golf Cadillac Championship on NBC and saw Ivanka and Donald on the screen but just brushed it off because of their well known passion for golf. To be honest, it was more exciting for me to see Watson fall to Rose after missing a birdie putt in the playoff round. Anyways, after searching Market Watch for 'IT Investment' and 'RFP' I stumbled upon this article and it all made sense. I am now pleased to summarize the exciting $200 million dollar investment Mr. Trump made with intentions to "reposition all aspects of the resort" resulting in a "greatly enhanced guest experience." Although not explicitly stated, I assume this investment will also include a 'renovation' of the current IT structure of the hotel and country club to increase productivity, revenue and ultimately ROI. Linda Robertson, from the Miami Herald, reported on March 8th that Mr. Trump stated, "to have 800 acres in a city like Miami -that opportunity will never arise again." It will be interesting to see how The Trump Organization follows through on their investment and achieves their goal of making Doral a "world-class facility benefiting of the resort." This article also mentions that The Trump Hotel Collection had been selected by GSA as the preferred developer for Washington D.C.'s The Old Post Office after an "exhaustive" Request For Proposal review. After researching the topic I could not find for what exact reasons he won, besides money. I will take a further look into the news. A lot of exciting new developments for The Trump Organization in the recent few months.

Disney World Room Upgrades, Special Requests & Tips - MouseChat.net - Orlando News & Re... - 0 views

  • Your Disney World vacation booking starts at CRO and is in the CRO system or comes in as a Disney Vacation Package. The key point is that the actual Disney World Resort, like the Grand Floridian, has no record of your reservation until it is transferred to the Disney resort itself. That happens either 3 or 4 days out. Sorry I forget the exact number of days out the specific Disney Resort gets the reservation in their hotel Lilo Reservation System.
    • glope143

By no surprise, the Disney Company is extremely private in what information about their theme parks, resorts, and dining locations is released. One can applaud the company for this monotonous effort as it is very difficult to find legitimate information online on any internal subjects. As a former Walt Disney World front desk agent, I searched some key words attempting to look up some information about the Resort's current property management system to share with the class. The PMS used is a Windows based operation with a User Interface titled LILO (complete with a photo of the animated namesake when logging on). The functionalities provided by LILO include room and ticket sales, reservation management, housekeeping, bank-in/bank-out, accounting, and resort configuration.
  • Other Disney resorts have thousands of rooms with turns that can be very little or 50% of the hotel could turn over in just one day.
    • glope143

The Walt Disney Resort in Orlando includes over 15 lodging options, some exceeding 1500 rooms in a single property. The LILO Interface works to connect the entire property, making it simple for a cast member working at the All Star Music Resort to check-in a guest staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge if needed. This interface interacts primarily with Disney's RFID powered "Magic Bands" that serve as the room key, payment method, photo capture, and Fastpass+ service for guests across property. As of today, the Orlando Disney property is the only property owned by the company to offer the RFID technology. Testing began 2012 and since then the company has successfully rolled out the MagicBand 2.0 program.

  • he award-winning Four Seasons standards," said Oswald Lares, director of sales for InvoTech Systems. "InvoTech's UHF-RFID readers record the location of each uniform as it travels to and from the property's laundry to maintain a real-time uniform inventory." • danalbert

The Walt Disney World Resort itself implemented the same technology nearly two years ago. With 66,000 cast members (employees) on the property, it seems to have served them well.It tracks check-outs, check-ins, laundry cycles and ensures that all costumes (uniforms) are cycled out and replaced after a pre-designated number of washes and wears. In any large-scale operation, particularly in hospitality, keeping a close track on inventory makes a lot of economic sense.
  •
The new Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World is using the InvoTech Systems Inc. UHF-RFID Uniform System to provide real -time tracking of the 7,000 plus uniforms required for their staff. the system is able to track all uniforms by utilizing a waterproof RFID tag that is attached to each custom made piece for "automated tracking and record keeping." RFID tags are installed as the employee is issued their uniform. The uniform is then passed over the counter to the employee and the tracking system automatically records the pieces as they are being issued. The system is able to count hundreds of articles in a matter of seconds and insures that all uniforms are properly accounted for. The software system also monitors use and laundry cycles to facilitate replacement when required. By investing in the InvoTech System the Four Seasons Orlando is ensuring employee accountability and also reducing labor expenses associated with manual handling of uniforms.

New Multi-Touch Hospitality Application | Virtual-Strategy Magazine - 0 views

  •
    Multi-touch software for hotels/resorts
  •
SensyTouch has introduced the latest version of hospitality specific software geared towards a more efficient and effective experience at hotels/resorts. "Located in a resort lobby or strategically placed throughout a hotel, this application allows guests to quickly access the resort services as well as local entertainment." The application also features, "...modules for guest services, local attractions, resort amenities and restaurants which include maps, reservations, menus, catalogs, coupons and much more." This software application is perfectly suited for front desk or guest services areas, where it can proudly display hotel/resort information on amenities as well as information about the local area. I am surprised that this software is not in use in more hotels. This software and others like it provide easy access to the information guests want to know. Though it may be more impersonal than a face to face interaction, guests can avoid waiting in lines at the front desk if they are in a rush or take their time to explore the information available.

Cloud Software Allows 700-Acre Resort's Financial Team to Regain Significant Man Hours ... - 0 views

  • When Tetherow, a now 700-acre resort in Bend, Oregon, first opened as a golf course and clubhouse in 2008, we were a small business with big ambitions.
  • Today, Tetherow is made up of twenty individual entities rolled into one wholly owned subsidiary, including a 50-room boutique hotel, a pool, two restaurants, vacation rental homes, an events pavilion, a recreation center, a golf academy, and various residential neighborhoods, as well as the 18-course golf course that started it all. In addition to our leadership team, our rapid growth has been led by our financial team’s investment in a technology that allows us to grow fast, under pressure, and with limited risk.
  • We came to realize that the technology and accounting systems that we had added piecemeal over the years to support our burgeoning business, a combination of Jonas restaurant software, QuickBooks, and Excel, didn’t allow us to scale and sustain growth.

  • After doing some thorough research, we decided to invest in Sage Intacct, a cloud-based financial ERP, because we felt its features – particularly automation – could take on our day-to-day tasks, and give our finance department the time in their day to provide trusted strategic advice, rather than mostly crunch numbers.
  • Our finance team was able to shorten our consolidations process from more than a week to less than four hours per month, cut our monthly close in half – from twenty to fewer than ten days – and regained 24 hours a week – previously spent on cash analysis.
  • Most importantly, a cloud-based financial ERP changed our culture. The finance team saw productivity gains that made us better business partners across the organization. We could provide advice on strategic business decisions

Security has always been an issue for financial services which led to avoidance of some new technology systems. Due to advancements in cloud systems, I think it is time for financial services arms of hospitality organizations to reap the increasing number of benefits of cloud computing. Also, cloud-based financial Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) helps companies enter new markets, explore new opportunities, and strengthen their business processes. Cloud-based financial ERP has certainly helped Tetherow Resort by reducing costs and allowing their finance department to concentrate on their strategic business matters rather than dealing with IT and infrastructure issues. By switching to a cloud-based system, Tetherow Resort was able to reduce the amount of infrastructure stored onsite, reduce costs of the process and develop new strategic plans. In my view, there is a huge potential in cloud-based financial ERP in for financial and even non-financial companies, because through this system companies' finance departments are able to increase the efficiency of their operations.

In the era of green travelers, the demand for eco-friendly hotels is on the rise. Since the interest is increasing, a lot of hotels have changed their routine practices and policies to become eco-friendly. Hotels have found ways to implement greener alternatives and have abandoned practices that create waste. Eco-friendly hotels have adopted practices that prove to be less harmful to the environment. For example, hotels can install energy saving thermostats, air conditioners and use solar water heating systems to conserve energy. Green travelers will appreciate these changes and it will also make a positive contribution to the hotel's bottom line. Eco-friendly hotels ultimately look at every facet of the guest experience to implement green changes. Some hotels offer programs where guests, that stay multiple nights, receive additional benefits for not having their linens washed. Some hotels have even replaced there chemical cleaning products for bio-based cleaning products. This is a great start toward a better tomorrow and within time more hotels will become more environmentally friendly.

Great article, the majority of hotels are currently implementing the paper straw and remove all plastics. Our hotel as well have changed the lights throughout the hotel. Not sure if that helps with the electrical cost but a lot of change is being made to be Eco-friendly.
