GDS, OTA and Meta: What's the difference? | HotelMinder - 2 views

  • GDS, OTA and Meta: What’s the difference?
    • ansonj55

The article covers the topics discussed in this week's topics related to Global Distribution Systems (GDS) and Online Travel Agency (OTA). It goes in detail regarding the difference and benefits of each. The landscape of the traveling industry changed in the late 1900s with the introduction of the GDS from the airline industry. Although costly, hotels are able to provide unsold rooms at a cheaper rate in order to secure bookings. Similarly, OTAs have gained popularity with the rise of use and reliance of the internet. Most beneficial of a OTA is more visibility for the hotel, since they invest a significant amount of capital in advertising. Whether a hotel is deciding whether or not to invest in a GDS or OTA, it is important to do a cost benefit analysis in order to determine which may be more beneficial to the property.
  • how can they help your hotel gain more online visibility and sell more rooms?
  • Hotels usually sell their rooms for 30% cheaper on GDS
  • ...26 more annotations...
  • GDS is a rather costly selling channel that mainly allows the sale of rooms in larger quantities to bigger companies (for corporate guests) or travel agencies (leisure travellers). Thus, small independent hotels usually do not need GDS.
    • ansonj55

GDS is costly so it is not really beneficial for smaller, independent hotels.
  • With the rise of the internet, many websites began selling rooms without the need for human interaction. These sites very quickly gained important market share,
  • Metasearch engines are becoming important in the travel industry
  • We do encourage hotels to use OTA to be more visible online
  • OTA’s invest a lot in online marketing
  • Rather than trying to compete with them, it would be better to see them as another selling distribution channel instead.
  • many different accommodation options at one glance
  • developed metasearch engine tools.
  • With travellers using the internet more than ever to search and book hotels
  • Increasing your online hotel visibility can be done in many ways.
  • hey usually do many different searches and visit several websites.
  • GDS: Global Distribution Systems
  • OTAs: Online Travel Agencies
  • GDS stands for “Global Distribution System”
  • Travel agencies use GDS to get real-time availability, and preferred rates on flight tickets, hotel rooms and car rentals all over the world as it allows them to be very reactive when asked for a quote.
  • OTA stands for "Online Travel Agency"
  • They were first created by airline companies during the 1950’s to broaden hotel and car rental businesses by enabling automated transactions between travel service providers and travel agencies (traditional and online).
  • The three biggest GDS systems are: Amadeus, Sabre and Galileo (now owned by Travelport)
  • real-time availability
  • Central Reservation Services (CRS), such as Sabre, allow hotels to sell their rooms to all GDS simultaneously. However, it is up to the hotel whether to connect with only one or two GDS directly, without the need for a CRS. The good news is that some channel managers are also able to connect with GDS systems.
  • The most popular example is Booking.com, although Expedia (for corporate guests) and Hostelworld (for more economical accommodation options) are also well-known.
    • sbaut010

GDS has become an industry of its own with its own markets.
  • Your hotel can usually be listed on an OTA free of charge by adding your hotel photos, descriptions, rooms, rates, etc. You can then choose how many rooms you’d like to sell through the OTA. The availability you’d like to sell as well as the room rate is your decision, and although appearing on the OTA is free, you will have to pay a commission of approximately 15% to 20% every time you get a booking.
    • sbaut010

Through this system OTA, the middleman, will always take a form of commission.
  • Although they produce rather time-consuming work as you need to log into each of their extranets to update daily availability and rates, you can very easily connect an OTA to a channel manager to automate, or at least greatly facilitate these tasks.
  • They were created shortly after OTAs and display the current rates of many different hotels in a given destination.
  • Today, OTA’s are a must, and although metasearch engines are slightly more technical to manage, they can also be an attractive selling channel to consider.
  • For small independent hotels, GDS is usually too costly to be considered.
  •
This article introduces GDS, OTA and Meta in a short space. GDS stands for Global Distribution System, GDS is a rather costly selling channel that mainly allows the sale of rooms in larger quantities to bigger companies. Small independent hotels usually do not need GDS. OTA stands for Online Travel Agency. meta stands for Metasearch Engines. For small hotels, the cost of GDS is high and it is generally difficult to adopt. OTA and meta are two methods worth considering.

How hotels are becoming smarter about waste | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • Resorts, hotels and restaurants generate a lot of waste—from food, packaging, amenity containers, waste water from toilets, kitchens and laundries.
  • Food waste accounts for more than 50 percent of waste in the hospitality industry. In the U.S., more than $218 billion is spent on growing, processing, transporting and disposing of food that is never eaten. This is mostly from homes and the foodservice industry, which includes hotels, with a whopping 70 billion pounds of food wasted every year.
  • The city of San Francisco has taken some of the most significant waste management steps in the country. After adopting a zero-waste policy in 2002, the city partnered with Recology, its long-term materials management service provider, to implement a five-pronged strategy, which is aiming for zero waste by 2020: Create convenient programs Conduct extensive public outreach Provide generator and service provider incentives Process trash to recover materials Adopt waste-reduction policies
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Recology provides similar economic incentives through its “pay-as-you-throw” program  in which the less trash a business discards and the more it recycles and composts, the less it pays for pick-up services.
  • “Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources and not burn or bury them. Implementing Zero Waste will eliminate all discharges to land, water or air that are a threat to planetary, human, animal or plant health.”
  • For business, especially hotels and restaurants, Stephanie Barger director of market development, zero waste programs at the U.S. Green Building Council, emphasized that “zero waste businesses are better businesses—better for themselves, better for customers and the communities in which they operate.”
  •
This article goes over the idea of zero waste. It continues on to explain what it means and how hotels are adapting to it.

The author starts off by saying that a computer system cannot replace human interaction, but it can help with efficiency. It goes on to explain that the company should understand how fast the information will be available to them in terms of reports, how the system will work for the company and the departments, and then the company should find a way to implement effectively. It is also important for the company to to select the software that would work best for the companies specific needs. The company should look at all departments when choosing the correct software and then hire an IT department to help manage the program and make sure it is running properly since it holds everyday information that the company needs. Information technology software should not be looked at as replacing employees, but as an aide to the current employees to efficiently operate.

Why must a good event management software also be a CRM - GEVME Blog - 1 views

  • Most of my clients asked me this question before, “What differentiates a good event management platform from an average one?”. Then I told them about data management. If you have an one-off event and decide that you will never have another similar event in the future, then you need not read further. However, if you are keen on event marketing and want to leverage events for generating business, you must not miss this article. An event management platform with integrated CRM will be key to your success. CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management. A CRM software, therefore, helps you manage relationships and interactions with your current and future customers. In most cases, your event attendees are your potential customers. Hence, it’s vital to integrate a CRM with the event software so that the sales team can take control and take action in time. Here are a few suggestions on how you can leverage an event CRM software to drive sales revenue. #1 Engage with your attendees as a pre-sales activity Pre-sales is very important as it’s about prospecting, qualifying and nurturing leads. Every time you spark a conversation, be it an email, a message, a Facebook comment, etc., you will want to record it and evaluate the sales-readiness of the attendee. #2 Easy access to information for Sales The marketing team’s effort in attendee nurturing shouldn’t be in conflict with the sales team’s lead nurturing. Your sales people need to know what events their clients or their leads have attended. Events could be about informing customers of a new product or keeping customers updated of the latest technological happening. Keeping a list of all the events that each of your client has attended will help Sales engage in an intelligent conversation with their client. That’s why there should be a data center that sales people and marketing people can access. With cloud-based CRM platforms, information is always available. #3 Store data for future use It doesn’t make sense to me if I use a separate platform for managing my event data. The data don’t only hold value to the event per se but also to customer analytics and remarketing. An integrated CRM allows you to look at a list of potential invitees and then select them as targets for event registration forms, so they are always aware of upcoming events and feel valued to be contacted. This may make them more likely to feel loyal to your brand and register. At the same time, your Sales team would have a better view of the customer and predict their behaviors. #4 Everyone is on the same page Not only marketing or sales need to nurture the relationships with customers. Customer success definitely needs to know what events their clients are attending. Human resources sometimes want to check if a candidate’s ever been to a company event. You want to make sure the people that need information to drive productivity and business get it easily.   In Conclusion… You as an event marketing professional must look for an event management software with integrated CRM now. Keep in mind that it must be a single platform that allows both your sales and marketing teams work effectively together. Email campaign reports or attendance reports are not CRM. If you want to find out more about this, send your questions to us by clicking the “Ask us a question” button below!
  •
It is important for event management software to be fully integrated with CRM or Customer Relationship Management features. This allows companies to maximize their meetings to not only handle the event successfully but also to manage the relationships with attendees before, during, and after the event. This capability is integral in ensuring the continued success of events.

HR Software for Restaurant Chains - HRIS Payroll Software - 2 views

  • The intricacies of the restaurant culture are magnified further when the restaurant expands to become a chain. These particularities may make it seem that a HRIS would not fit or help as much with managing a restaurant chain, but this could not be further from the truth.
  • A HRIS can help to break down and simplify many of the things that make managing a restaurant chain difficult
  • A HRIS that makes it possible for employees to view their schedules online, make time off requests, and view approvals reduces the potential for errors and miscommunications.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • A HRIS can make scheduling tasks much easier for managers by using financial data to identify labor needs and lining this information up with employee availability.
  • When manual systems are used to keep restaurant records, it can be very difficult to keep all information organized and accessible for compliance purposes.
  • The fast paced nature of restaurants can cause paperwork to become misplaced, forgotten, or even damaged. HRIS solutions keep all information in one place, produce reports on demand, and continually update information regarding compliance needs.
  •
This article highlights the benefits of restaurant chains using HRIS software for better employee management. The restaurant business is one that is fast paced and can be complex at times. According to the article, HRIS can bring greater consistency to the workplace and empower employees. This system has proven to help with many other large restaurant chains. It simplifies scheduling for managers and employees by allowing them to make edits on the software or request days off or vacations. It also helps control labor costs by identifying the labor needs and pairing it with the employees' availability. It empowers employees because it gives them the access to view schedules and reduce errors or miscommunications. The HRIS keeps everything organized and accessible for compliance purposes. In my opinion, this would be a great addition to the restaurant industry. An industry that is constantly moving must have something in place to keep it organized in regards to files and employee management. The HRIS provides an efficient and effective way in doing so.

5 Profitable Internet Marketing Strategies for Hotels - 0 views

  • If you're a hotel owner, chances are you are always looking to attract new guests to your location
  • Hospitality marketing is not always easy
  • Optimize your website for search engines
  • ...15 more annotations...
  • One of the most crucial strategies for hospitality marketing involves ensuring the visibility of your hotel's website on search engines
  • Having this information available up front can provide enormous benefits for your hotel. If you neglect this strategy in your hotel Internet marketing plan, you will be sacrificing many potential guests. One study found that 40% of mobile searchers are looking for travel-related information, like hotels, are likely to place phone calls if the option is available. Setting up your Google My Business page can make that option available instantly!
  • Research has shown that the top result in searches gets around 33% of clicks. This drops to 17% for the second result and 11% for the third. If you're on the second page, you're looking at about 1% or less.
  • Strengthen your local SEO
  • earch engine optimization involves making critical updates to your website's content, code, links, and occasionally layout to improve its likelihood of ranking in user searches.
  • Because hotels may have a hard time gaining a large number of engaged fans to consume their content or make future bookings, a shift in approach is recommended. For hotels, social media can be an incredible way to encourage interaction with past, current, or future guests, solve customer service issues in a timely manner or highlight the positive experiences that guests have had at your hotel
  • Encourage interaction on social media
  • Linking to your social media pages from your hotel website, and ensuring that they are checked regularly, can help encourage potential guests to contact you there. You may also want to add a tagline to your website, such as, "contact us on Facebook or Twitter with any questions we may answer about your stay"—to encourage this behavior.
  • Social media also helps humanize your business so that you can more easily relate to customers, making it a valuable part of an overall hotel internet marketing strategy.
  • Educate guests with content marketing
  • you may know that adding informative, keyword-rich content to your website is one of the best ways to improve your ranking on search engines
  • Dominate your competitors with PPC
  • nternet marketing for hotels can be highly challenging if you operate in a city that is a popular vacation spot or tourist attraction.
  • Pay-per-click advertising, or PPC, is another way that you can boost your hotel's visibility in search results. Searches on Google don't deliver just natural (also called "organic") results—they also deliver paid ads that have been placed there by companies or businesses.
  • PPC advertising works like this: your hotel sets up ads around certain relevant keywords, like "hotel in [city][state]." You then bid a certain amount, usually suggested by Google, to have your ads appear at the top and along the sides of organic search results. You don't pay anything for your ads unless they are clicked—thus the name "pay-per-click."
  •
This article was very interesting because it provided us with 5 different strategies to effectively use e-marketing for hotels. The five strategies they come up with are: Optimize your website for search engines, Strengthen your local SEO, Encourage interaction on social media, Educate guests with content marketing, and Dominate your competitors with PPC. All of these are very helpful hints that we might have heard of before, but it is crucial to go more in depth. I found very interesting that all of them are free except for the last one that requires a bit of an investment.

Despite the fact that the adoption of new technologies tends to result in competitive advantage for the organization, many organizations take a "wait and see" approach before assuming new technologies. This paper describes three categories of barriers that make early adoption of new technologies difficult or unsuccessful for some organizations
    • drbucky

Benefits to adopting to new technologies include: improved marketing strategies, improved customer experience, improved cost control, increased revenues, improved productivity, improved operational efficiency.
    • drbucky

This is odd on two fronts: 1 - that the research into barriers to adopting new technology in the hotel industry is limited. This is a very-highly studied industry, so I would expect much more research in this field. 2 - that the industry is known to be a "late and slow adopter of technology". However, knowing what the barriers are (through this and similar studies) can help to break down those obstacles.

At the end of the day, much of the way to deal with this issue is to study and practice change management, in general. Many of the barriers discussed in this article can be addressed through change management study.
    • drbucky

While we examine universal barriers to change, the author asserts that we need to understand barriers specific to the hospitality industry.
    • drbucky

Rogers: barriers occur during initiation and during implementation.
    • drbucky

Pare and Trudel: resistance to change influenced by lack of understanding the connection between the proposed change and the benefits to the organization
    • drbucky

Matthews and Linski: fear of change is a natural, human issue, yet un-managed resistance to adopting new technologies typically results in the failure of the change initiative.
    • drbucky

change management in the lodging industry include communication, training, participation, planning
    • drbucky

Barriers in phase 1 (pre-implementation) from lack of understanding ROI of proposed technology. Predicting ROI is challenging, especially since it may take a while for a firm to experience ROI. Will a significant enough ROI result before the proposed technology is outdated?
    • drbucky

Barriers during implementation result from mis-managed processes and communications - (e.g., vendor to client, management to staff, poor integration of processes).
    • drbucky

Sometimes the integration of new technologies do not interface with existing systems well, making the implementation process more difficult as adjustments must be made throughout the entire work flow. This is an issue that must be considered prior to implementation and addressed early to maintain any positive change processes.
    • drbucky

The challenge may not be to the technology, itself, but results from morale and organizational culture regarding change and, especially, how to deal with change. This is not an issue that should be addressed ONLY during a change process but should occur all the time - creating a stronger corporate culture.

Tablets Are Making Waiters Obsolete - Business Insider - 0 views

  • The casual dining spot has recently introduced tablets in dining rooms nationwide that customers can use to place orders, browse the menu, and entertain otherwise noisy children.
  • As tablets in restaurants go, Chili's has become a standard bearer. They just announced the introduction of 45,000 Ziosk tablets in 800 locations.
  • But Chili's is not alone in this push toward automation. Applebee's announced the installation of 100,000 tablets last December

  • Some major chains have already made the bet. Buffalo Wild Wings announced a big tablet push in March, promising to have them in all North American stores by the end of 2015.
  • E la Carte cofounder and CEO Rajat Suri argued that tablets are designed to work alongside human employees, not replace them.
  • These enhancements are geared toward increasing customer satisfaction and driving up revenue. Patrons are far more like to buy a restaurant gift card or buy dessert if they're pleased with their dinning experience at the end of the meal.
  • Tablets are also making life better for waiters with the help of some behavioral science.
  • This tablet tsunami suggests waiters might not be getting the job done.
  •
Sam Colt wrote an article for Business Insider titled Tablets Are Making Waiters Obsolete - An Chilli's Is Leading The Way. This article bothered me a bit, because knowing what I know about Hospitality we build our brand around customer service and customer satisfaction and how can we do that if we are eliminating the person to person interaction. In his article Colt mentioned Chili's "has recently introduced tablets in dining rooms nationwide that customers can use to place orders, browse the menu, and entertain otherwise noisy children". I understand the thought behind keeping your guests entertain while they wait for service; however, I believe it should be just that, entertainment not self-service. Dine in restaurants should not be treated like a fast food restaurant and guests should expect a reasonable wait time. Having that person to person interaction makes a dining experience more enjoyable. E la Carte co-founder and CEO Rajat Suri argued "if someone does not want to spend time with a server, they're going to ignore the server anyways." My thoughts are why would you dine in a restaurant if you do not want to be severed, why not go to a fast food restaurant. Chili's states the tablets are solely for increasing customer satisfaction and increase revenue and suggests the tablets are making the life of waiters better.

Why Tablets on Restaurant Tables Are Here to Stay - Eater - 1 views

  • Over the past few years, a new fixture has popped up on restaurant tables next to the ketchup bottles and salt shakers: tablets.
  • Applebee’s installed tablets at its restaurants in 2014, and they’re now found on every table at all of its nearly 2,000 U.S. locations.
  • There’s been a fair amount of concern that tablets would put human servers out of jobs, but thus far Outback and other casual dining chains say they are using tablets as server’s assistants:

  • n fact, tips have stayed steady or even increased, thanks to the ease of tipping via tablet: Diners can typically tap just one button to automatically apply a tip of the industry standard 20 percent, which is easier than manually entering a smaller tip.
  •
This article describes how many restaurants are now adding tablets to their POS systems. Major chains, such as Applebee's, TGI Friday's, and Outback Steakhouse, are now using these tablets at many of their tables. The article suggests that the servers' tips are either staying the same or increasing due to the ability of the customer to merely tap a 20% tip. Also, the article suggests that sales for the restaurant have increased and labor costs have decreased. It appears that this trend will continue to increase in restaurants.

Thomson ReutersVoice: How Technology Is Disrupting Accounting -- And Why The Industry M... - 1 views

  • It’s hard to believe the impact that technology has had on all of us, including the accounting profession.
  • Over the years, accounting firms got on board with websites, which allowed them to market differently and far more effectively. Personal client portals were introduced by Thomson Reuters in 2001, effectively eliminating geographic constraints for firms. With portals, they could serve clients 24x7, regardless of location, and communicate and collaborate far better than they could previously. The Web, mobile and social media have had an enormous impact on how firms can operate today. Social marketing has proven to be very effective in many firms. Audits have changed radically. Now they can be done online, with content also accessed online. We can research anywhere, anytime as well.
  • The next 20 years will see even more dramatic change for the profession. Artificial Intelligence (AI), cognitive computing/machine learning, natural language processing and blockchain are the hot topics today – of course, converging with big data.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • True business analytics will come into play – given the amount of data we’ll be able to collect and the machine assistance we’ll have – to put real meaning around the data and guidance for our business clients.
  • The concept of the continuous, real-time audit will come into play, and we’ll be assisted in our judgments – although the human element won’t entirely disappear. Fraud detection will be easier and far faster. Blockchain will move the auditor’s role away from having to check transaction data, and it will be used to test audit assertions as well.

Robotic Technology and AI Revitalize the Hotel Experience | TravelPulse - 0 views

  • Research by Gartner shows that customer experience drives over two-thirds of customer loyalty. Investing in the right technologies now can ensure guests feel safe and comfortable while staying at a hotel this year.
  • Hotels, such as Hotel Sky in Johannesburg, are using automated attendants to serve guests, from checking in to porting luggage to their rooms. Aside from assisting guests with tasks, these robots can also scan facial expressions to measure the sentiment of guests’ experiences.Self-service kiosks, similar to those available in airports, can also give guests control over their interactions, recognize their loyalty preferences and offer them an efficient and easy way to check-in.
  • Hotels like Hilton use a robot concierge service to offer recommendations, directions and hotel information. Mobile apps can also allow guests to skip the lines, offering an efficient but still personalized experience.

  • When a returning loyalty member checks in, the room can automatically be set to their preferred temperature, play their favorite music and have the curtains wide open to enjoy the top-floor view, just as they like. Using AI and voice technology via in-room assistants further enhances the experience, enabling guests to manage their environments completely hands-free and avoid various touchpoints like the thermostat, light switches and the remote.
  • AI can also provide guests with the option to make requests for towels, pillows or food to be delivered to their rooms, outside the door without human contact. The Mercantile New Orleans uses a robot butler to deliver snacks, coffee or the morning newspaper to guests.
  • A recent AHLA survey found that 62 percent of guests consider cleanliness and safety protocols as their number two priority when choosing a hotel, compared to 38 percent of guests pre-COVID. Because of this, it is inherent upon hotels to implement new health and safety measures.
  • Verified Market Research, the market for UV disinfecting bots will grow to more than $5.5 billion by 2027.

  • By 2025, over 85 million existing jobs will be lost due to the seismic shift toward robotization and automation, according to estimates in the “Future of Jobs Report 2020” published by the World Economic Forum.
  • These are jobs like data analysts, AI learning specialists, digital transformation specialists, software and applications developers, robotization strategists, robotics technologists, robot training and maintenance specialists, etc.
  • robotization and automation are coming even to our technology-averse hospitality industry.

  • ●     Solve dull, repetitive, dirty or dangerous jobs.●     Solve high turnover of trained employees (20%-30%)●     Solve problems like poor discipline, lack of motivation, etc.●     Lower labor costs, which are especially burdensome now●     Increase productivity●     Solve labor shortage of entry-level and unskilled workers, which plague the industry in “normal” times.
  • Labor costs constitute 36%-50% of hotel operational costs, based on hotel category, and in these times of low travel demand, low occupancies and catastrophic RevPARs, robotization and automation are becoming increasingly appealing to hotel owners and operators.
  • mobile and contactless check-in applications have already made the front desk staff obsolete
  • ultraviolet light pulses to kill viruses, bacteria and fungi and are already deployed at hundreds of hotels in the U.S.
  • clean guest rooms 20 percent faster and public areas up to 80 percent faster than human housekeepers.
  • security guards at resorts, large hotels and casinos, airports, theme parks and outdoors perimeters.
  • replace 100% of the waitstaff
  • The labor unions in major metropolitan areas with highly-unionized hospitality labor force are dead set against any robotization and automation or any technology advancement that can reduce the number of paying members.
  • hospitality is fast becoming a tech industry now
  • emergence of today’s tech-savvy customer who expects to find at hotels the same or better technology advancements they already enjoy at home
  • Robotics, AI, mobility, IoT devices and contactless check-in tech are being adopted across the industry at a very fast clip.
  • within the next 10 years many hotels will operate at half the pre-coronavirus staff level and we will be seeing more and more examples of semi and fully automated hotels
  •
This article is a big time eye opener how robots are already in place taking away plenty of jobs in every department. I highlighted some of the jobs they are currently doing and how much labor cost money the hotels are saving. Yes we love the new technology but it can also be a little intimidating once they start eliminating jobs. It really points out what we may not find obvious on how majority of the hospitality companies are already in use with artificial intelligence technologies. I believe in 10 years the world will be a complete different place and robots will take over for the most part!

  •
This article discusses the addition of the Smart Tender at MGM Hotels in Las Vegas. It raised some questions that many people pointed out this week in our discussion posts. What will happen with bartending jobs? Is this the beginning of the shift to more jobs being removed for technology? The article does highlight that not all bartending jobs will be lost, for example, casino bartenders. While this could be a great step forward it could also have some issues.
