Information Technology A Boon To Hospitality Industry | By NP Chandra Shekhar, CHA, MHC... - 3 views

  • Information is the key for decision making in any business. Getting the right information at the right time, at the right place and faster makes lot of difference in any business and so especially in Hospitality Business where the decisions are taken instantly in some levels.
  • It is a combination of the Right People and the Right System that makes a business successful.

  • A good Information Technology System comprise of three components, Systems, Software and Hardware.
  • From the time of reservation until the time customer checks-out of the hotel everything is recorded and the data is available. The computer system really monitors the guest requirement, their likes and dislikes, their wants and satisfaction levels in a readable way that helps the hotel enhance their future services.
  • Information and good service is the key for success in hospitality industry.
  • Selecting the right type of system is most important for any hotel operation. Most of the hotels use special software made for hotels which are generally called as Property Management System (PMS).
  • Normally, all systems comes with Room Division – with Front Office System and House Keeping Module, Food and Beverage Division – with Point of Sale and Back End system – with Accounting, Inventory, Human Resources.
  • System requirement for each facility differs and it should preferably be a cost effective solution.
  • Good IT personnel should have the knowledge of all the three components, i.e., System (flow of each activity), Software (that translate the activity in measurable terms both quantitatively and qualitatively) and Hardware (Media through which we can see these activities). All this should reflect in primarily guest satisfaction, staff satisfaction, management satisfaction and owner satisfaction.
  • Yet, man made the computer and not the other way.
  • Man cannot be replaced at any level.
  •
As the topic suggests information is the key for decision making in any business. Computerized modern information technology should make this process much quicker and more efficient. But, of course, as the old saying goes "Garbage in Garbage out." So it is a combination of the Right People and the Right System that makes a business successful. Computers cannot replace men. Good people along with a good computerized system is necessary. The software used for any hospitality business needs to be tailored to the specific needs of that organization depending on whether they primarily sell just room service or whether they offer a lot of food and beverage service or other services. Good I.T personnel should have good knowledge of all three components: System (flow of each activity), Software (that translate the activity in measurable terms both quantitatively and qualitatively) and Hardware (media through which we can see these activities) To achieve this at least two months of training should be done, of which one month must be on the job training. Once an appropriate mix of competent people and a good system is set up this should reflect in guest satisfaction, staff satisfaction, management satisfaction and owner satisfaction.

This article discusses how information technology has become common in the hospitality industry. The author starts off by saying that a computer system cannot replace human interaction, but it can help with efficiency. It goes on to explain that the company should understand how fast the information will be available to them in terms of reports, how the system will work for the company and the departments, and then the company should find a way to implement effectively. It is also important for the company to to select the software that would work best for the companies specific needs. The company should look at all departments when choosing the correct software and then hire an IT department to help manage the program and make sure it is running properly since it holds everyday information that the company needs. Information technology software should not be looked at as replacing employees, but as an aide to the current employees to efficiently operate.

'Good Enough' Rules the World - The New York Times - 0 views

  •
Technology has become the backbone of today's economy, especially during this pandemic. Technology has become the center of the universe since with the closure of many businesses, and remaining indoors has contributed to people shifting their focus on technology to stay sane and survive (Ovide, 2020). The success of many online platforms during this pandemic like Netflix, Amazon, TikTok has become a worldwide sensation that technology rules the world. This paper will discuss in detail how the aspect of 'Good Enough' contentment in technology leads the world. The article describes how 'good enough' has been embraced, especially in technology, since a company having many small combined Stuff in one platform is more convenient despite them not having something one may need. They have accumulated other Stuff to substitute for that which they cannot offer and package it conveniently and affordably so that it can be useful and a good enough spot to hang out and consume time with (Ovide, 2020). Good enough economy' has contributed immensely to technological growth by creating a balance between content creators and distributors of the information, primarily through the internet, which has become an effective medium in the information distribution-making it easy and available worldwide, as people use it to showcase their talent and share content created during their free time. Companies like Facebook and YouTube have managed to assemble many people since they have a variety of content that, although one content is missing, one can focus attention elsewhere on the pool of the content accessible (Ovide, 2020). In a nutshell, good enough is more appropriate than perfect, which can have extra cost or hard to find. Most companies sell to us what they need us to buy hence keep creating new ideas.

A lot of the flights they do show are ones you don’t want, starting with “basic economy” fares that hit you with tons of restrictions and fees, so the price you see isn’t the one you end up paying, along with connections way too short or way too long, ones that no responsible travel agent would let you book.
    • teresastas

This is a very good point that is often overlooked. Southwest Airlines is one of those who do not publish their fairs on most of these OTA searches.
  • The reality is that while it was widely predicted that the internet was going to kill off travel agents when digital tools were placed at every traveler’s disposal, that just hasn’t happened, for several good reasons.
  • “They can find crazy deals”; “They will be your advocate”; “They’ll take care of the little things”; “They’re true experts” and “They don’t usually cost extra.”
    • teresastas

I think that the general public believe that TA's cost extra to use. For the most part that isn't true...unless it's a cooperate travel.

  • Travel agents are a thing of the past - they primarily booked tickets and beds. Travel advisors have taken on a much more complex role - part psychologist, life coach, executive producer, concierge, fixer, dream maker, and ‘Blink Blink’ genie, with the multitude of services that they provide.
  • Anything that causes cancelled flights (or cruises, etc.) means hassles, but the people who get through this process the most smoothly and the ones who get rebooked first and get the few available seats out of Dodge are usually the ones who used a travel agent. It’s that simple. First off, you actually have someone to call, versus long lines at banks of airport phones masquerading as “help desks.” But good agencies are constantly monitoring their clients’ flights and they usually know about your problem before you do - and often have a resolution before you even call them.
    • teresastas

They make a good point about having someone to call.
  • Expertise: No one knows everything about travel, no matter how deeply they are involved in the industry.
    • teresastas

      Reason #2: Expertise
  • Emergencies: This is the one most applicable to the average occasional travel.
    • teresastas

      Reason #2: Expertise
  • It is important to remember that these advantages are not just for luxury travelers. Good travel advisors do not just know what the best hotel is, they know what the best hotel is for you and your budget and can help you find the right fit.
  • Connections: Whether you are trying to book space at a coveted 8-villa safari lodge in Africa or get a room in a top Paris hotel during Fashion Week, most hoteliers keep emergency inventory and guess who gets it? The travel advisors they have known for years who book a lot of guests and send them a lot of business.
    • teresastas

      Reason #3: Connections
  • “Travel advisors provide our clients with access: access to people, places, and experiences that could never be replicated, much less imagined. A great travel advisor has invested time and relationships in creating their ‘black book’ of contacts and relationships, so that when their clients travel, they are treated as a VIPs, not just a credit card number.” In my experience, everyone likes being treated like a VIP.
    • teresastas

I think this lends itself to who your travel agent is and what they are most experienced in. I couldn't agree that all travel agents are going to give their clients VIP experiences.
  • “Information overload, thousands of new hotels on the scene, all sorts of new cruise ships, passport and visa issues, weather, transit strikes, political unrest, natural disasters, travel insurance, travel providers going out of business, it’s never ending. How does one navigate all of this? To avoid the travel landmines that lay in front of you, you need to get a great travel advisor!
  • Extras: When you get more than you expected for the same price, that’s a great deal, and with travel advisors this happens all the time.
    • teresastas

      Reason #4: Extras
  • “The millennial generation specifically may have seen their parents use a travel advisor, but don’t feel like they need one - until they are deep in the spiral of research. By shifting gears to planning with an expert, they feel liberated from the immense pressure of choosing the ‘best’ resort - because we’re cutting through the noise of all the conflicting opinions they’re seeing online.
    • teresastas

This is a great point. I know first hand that when booking an actual vacation it can be so much easier to have an expert weed out the options they know won't work for you.
  • Air: If you are trying to buy the cheapest round-trip economy ticket from New York to Dallas, even the best advisors probably can’t get it for less than you can buy it online, though you still have to deal with all the pitfalls of the online travel sites and you will lose the safety net advisors provide when things go wrong. But in a couple of other cases, buying your air through an agent can actually save you money, or miles, or both.
    • teresastas

Reason 5: Air Fare You will usually be able to find the cheapest economy online but there are times when a travel agent might be able to save you fees on airlines.
  • It just doesn’t seem possible, but it is, real tickets, same airline, better seats, less money. I don’t know how they do it, and frankly I don’t care, but if you know who to call this happens all the time (if you are not a client of SmartFlyer booking your vacation or business trip, they will charge you a fee to do the legwork and find you great deals on premium and mileage tickets, but in almost every case I’ve seen, it still saves you money).
    • teresastas

This is a great travel tip!
  • Better Trips! At the end of the day this is the bottom line, the big win you get with a good travel advisor. They know more than you do, they are better connected, they have access to benefits you can’t get yourself, and they can match and often beat any prices you find. They plan a better trip and then provide a safety net.
    • teresastas

Reason number 6: Better Trips Your trip is better all around when you use a good travel advisor!
  • Travel advisors take the overwhelming amount of information out there and distill it into the key points that apply to you - the best hotel/destination/tour for your interests, your budget, and your time frame.
  • 5 Reasons Why You Need A Travel Agent - More Than Ever
    • teresastas

Hotel Security: Locking Systems | Hotel Industry Magazine - 0 views

  • Historically, hotel users travelled with less high value transportable goods. However, in today’s world this is no longer the case. Most clients now travel with laptops, mobile phones, iPads and so on. This obviously appeals to the less law abiding members of society and today’s conscientious hoteliers are addressing this threat with increased traceability and security.
  • Mechanical keys are no longer an acceptable security measure in the Hotel sphere. They are easily lost and readily duplicated. A lost Key will necessitate the changing of the entire Lock at the guest room if security is to be maintained. Modern RFiD card systems negate the need for concern in this area, a lost card can simply be deactivated and rendered useless to a potential intruder, when combined with the audit trail of events at the lock this inspires guest confidence.
  • RFiD locking systems are becoming the technology of choice in today’s market. As there is no physical contact between the card and the lock there is no need for open channels for card insertion or interference from external sources. The cards themselves have no magnetic strip or microchip on the surface of the card and the limited information on the card is securely encrypted (No personal information is contained on the card at all).
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Today’s biometric locks are reliable, cost effective and aesthetically pleasing. I think it is only a question of time before we see the emergence of cost effective systems based at reception that will read the clients print and update the room lock remotely.
  • Security requirements in hotels will inevitably become more of a deciding factor for consumers when booking rooms. As consumers become more aware of the technology hoteliers with a blasé attitude to security will inevitably see their occupancy rates suffer.
  •
Nowadays, people are traveling with more valuables than they used to years ago. As a result, "hotel security measures are now paramount for hoteliers, and selecting the right type of locking system for the property can be a minefield for owners". Mechanical keys and poorly maintained electronic door locks do not offer guests a sense of security. Modern RFiD card systems are becoming the popular technological choice for hoteliers. Biometric locks, which read a fingerprint or face, are reliable and cost-effective, as well. However, they are more of an ideal security solution for offices, back-of-house, or wine stores. Not only are the RFID locks harder to hack, they are cost-effective as well. The lack of physical contact between the card and the lock makes open channels for card insertion unnecessary. The cards do not have a magnetic strip or contain microchips. The card itself only has encrypted non-personal information associated with it. In addition, since there is no contact between the card and lock, "there is no requirement for read head cleaning or replacement of read heads due to wear". As a result, the amount of faulty cards is minimized and guest satisfaction increases.
  •
As this article mentioned, more and more people pay attention on the issue of hotel security because of the development of modern technology. People began to worry about their safety. For the locking system, we use RFID card systems to ensure the safety. Even though it is lost, we can deactivate it at soon. It also reduce the burden of employees in Front Desk. At the same time, we should observe surrounding environment and learn to protect ourselves. In my opinion, the updating of this locking system is a very good idea to save cost and more efficiently.
  •
This article answers questions that summarize the change in hotel security. The article explains why hotels have taken a new route in locks for the guests, stating that the needs of a secure stay has grown with the changes in the value of goods that each customer brings.  The article concludes with a brief description of how hotel security will evolve over the next 5-10 years.  overall i think this is a good article that explains some of the questions that many people have.

Thre are different target groups to impress luxury, business, leisure, casual but each website should fulfilll the needs forall the categories of a traveler no matter what they are staying at the hotel for.

Deploying WiFi in the Hospitality Industry including Hotels, Condos and Apartments - 0 views

  • a high powered business class Wi-Fi solution. The EnGenius ECB350 and EnGenius EAP350 are 800mW 11n access points with gigabit ethernet. The coverage is 3-times greater than consumer wireless routers and more powerful than the 100mW enterprise class access points from Cisco Systems. The units are feature rich and includes multiple SSID, VLAN tagging, SNMP and Power Over Ethernet for flexible deployment.  They also support the free EnGenius EZ controller software for management and monitoring.  There is also an outdoor version, EnGenius ENH210 EXT which can extend the wireless network outdoors or be used to bridge remote buildings.
  • Environment is always a factor when discussing wireless connectively. The hotel’s construction, size and location are some contributing factors, which will determine the wireless coverage for each hotel. These factors determine how radio frequencies travel through and around obstacles which will vary for every hotel installation.
  • Concrete walls with metal rebar pose the biggest problems for WiFi coverage so positioning the access points in a central hallway is usually best.
  •
this article show us a new technology of WIFI system in hotel. most of the hotel WIFI system are crowd and costly. however this system with some method to make the system efficiency and cheap. and most importantly, it can extend the wireless network outdoors or be used to bridge remote buildings. In my opinion. even this kind of system mayby little completed to set up, but it will bring a perfect WIFI effect. Nowadays, more and more people focus on the WIFI effect when they live in the hotel. If this system can give a deep impact to customers, it will be the advantage to fight with other hotels. with the internet development in our life, a good WIFI can make our study, work, and relax easier. so, for hotels, a good condition of WIFI system is a strong weapon. if with the system been extended, it also a good news for our guests. it is a kind of win-win choice.

How EBay Failed In China - Forbes - 0 views

  • In 2004, eBay had just entered China and was planning to dominate the China market. Alibaba was a local Chinese company that helped small- and medium-sized enterprises conducting business online.
  • As a defensive strategy, Ma decided to launch a competing consumer-to-consumer (C2C) auction site, not to make money, but to fend off eBay from taking away Alibaba’s customers.
  • While visiting Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, I felt the same “insanely great” energy of entrepreneurship as I felt in Silicon Valley.

  • A new Web site named Taobao—meaning “digging for treasure”
  • Knowing that most small business people would rather watch TV than log on to the Internet, Ma secured advertisements for Taobao on major TV channels.
  • Unlike eBay EachNet, which charged its sellers for listing and transaction fees, Taobao was free to use.
  • According to a Morgan Stanley report, Taobao was more customer focused and user friendly than eBay EachNet.
  • Taobao had also better terms for its customers: it offered longer listing periods (fourteen days) and let customers extend for one more period automatically. EBay EachNet did not have this flexibility.
  •
This is a very interesting article. As a Chinese teenager, I can experience all the changes and development of Taobao and how it won Chinese market that the author mentioned in this article. eBay can be successful in an international market, while failed rapidly in Chinese market. Firstly we can see how competitive the online market is. After this we also want to ask why eBay was beaten in China? The author of this article listed four reasons: 1) Compared with eBay, Taobao has better marketing strategies in dealing with local market. At the beginning, Taobao promoted itself through TV ads and later used short messages, which were more popular than Internet in China. 2) Taobao has less limitations on buyers and sellers through the whole process. For instance Taobao charges no listing and transaction fees on its sellers and it's free to register as a user in Taobao 3) Products made in China gives Taobao more chances to sell goods in competitive price. 3)Taobao has better terms for its customers, which helps it o to earn a good reputation and also makes Taobao more flexible in customer service. 4) The way that Taobao lists its items are more customer centric and adaptable to Chinese customers' tastes. • "(Taobao) allows us to reach millions of consumers in a very direct way, many of whom we could have difficulty reaching through brick-and-mortar storefronts,
  • Taobao, which started as a consumer-to-consumer platform, rose to the top of the China's online retail market after beating out e-commerce rivals like eBay in the country.
  •
This article showed more foreign brands like Adidas and Gap are expanding their reach into China's market by tapping the user base of the country's largest online retailer Taobao.com for e-commerce. A majority of domestic and well-known international brands have set up their own online stores on Taobao Mall for brand expanding and sales. Presence on Taobao Mall is complementary to their own e-commerce site, which is doing well, along with their stores. Through Taobao, international brands can reach millions of customers in a very direct way and Chinese customers are increasingly turning to the internet to do their shopping. But there are challenges with opportunities. They have to fight with counterfeit goods. Counterfeit goods are low price in Chinese e-commerce market. Taobao also launched actions to penalize selling counterfeit goods. In a word, e-commerce in China is not mature, it has a long way to be improved.
