Insiders suspected in Saudi Aramco cyber attack | SciTech | GMA News Online | The Go-To... - 0 views

  • Hackers from a group called "The Cutting Sword of Justice" claimed responsibility for the attack. They say the computer virus gave them access to documents from Aramco's computers,
  • The hacking group that claimed responsibility for the attack described its motives as political
  • the group said Saudi Aramco was the main source of income for the Saudi government, which it blamed for "crimes and atrocities" in several countries, including Syria and Bahrain.
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • According to analysis of Shamoon by computer security firm Symantec, the way the virus gets into networks may vary, but once inside it tries to infect every computer in the local area network before erasing files to render PCs useless.
  • Yet those sources say such protections could not prevent an attack by an insider with high-level access.
  • insiders were implicated in just 4 percent of cases last year.
  • Saudi Aramco has said that only office PCs running Microsoft Windows were damaged. Its oil exploration, production, export, sales and database systems all remained intact as they ran on isolated and heavily protected systems.
  • Because the virus wiped the hard drives, it is difficult for Saudi Aramco to determine exactly what information the hackers obtained.
  • The Shamoon virus is designed to attack ordinary business computers
  • . It does not belong to the category of sophisticated cyber warfare tools
  • The hackers behind the Shamoon attack siphoned off data from a relatively small number of computers, delivering it to a remote server
  • It is standard industry practice to shield plant operating networks from hackers by running them on separate operating systems that are protected from the Internet.
  •
Saudi Arabias national oil company, Aramco, was attacked by a computer virus, Shamoon, and it is suspected that an insider or employee assisted the hackers. The virus spread through the network and infected about 30,000 PC business computers and wiped their hardrives. This is one of the worst attacks against a single business. The hackers who claimed responsibility, The Cutting Sword of Justice, were politically motived. The companies more important documents including plant operating networks were not affected by the virus because they were on a separate and higher security network. Recently, other Middle Eastern natural gas firms with relations to Saudi Arabia have been hit by cyber attacks. Because the Aramco hackers admitted their motives against the Saudi Arabian government income sources, I think that all the cyber attacks may be politically motivated. As a Middle Eastern oil company with relations to Saudi Arabia, this is a major indication to take precautionary measures and increase network security. This attack demonstrates that no matter how much security you have in place, if an insider is willing to assist hackers or provide hackers with necessary information, you are no longer protected. It would seem imperative that employees with this access are chosen carefully or network access is very limited.

How will technology impact the efficiency and sustainability of waste management? - 0 views

  • How will technology impact the efficiency and sustainability of waste management?
  • This is the way waste management has always been. New York’s first waste management was an attempt to clean the streets of the thousands of tonnes of horse manure dumped on them every day.
  • The advent of packaging, plastics and electrical/electronic products has changed the way waste managers work. Yet, in 70% of the world, the old pick up and dump model continues sadly unchanged with disastrous consequences, such as oceans being full of plastics. But elsewhere waste management is now a sophisticated, technically and socially complex industry.
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • Technology has enabled waste management to ensure environmental and human health protection while at the same time handling complex materials, increasing recycling, producing energy and virtually eliminating landfills in some countries.
  • Robotics are already widely present in sorting material facilities
  • The internet allows continuous real-time tracking of waste across countries
  • Hydraulic collection systems are increasingly being introduced in new buildings to avoid bins on the road.
  • Plant management, emission monitoring, chemical/biological parameters within plants
  • These new technologies are creating vast amounts of data. The data allows us to understand the movement not just of waste but of people – how they behave and what products and materials they are buying and will turn into waste.
  • predict the future and plan waste collection, the location of bins on the streets, the amount of plant we need, with some anticipation.
  • It also allows producers of waste to intervene to reduce their waste outputs
  • Add to this the use of artificial intelligence and blockchain computing – technologies that allow the multiplication of the access and transmission of intelligence and its automation. How does this work in practice?
  • First, data collection will be faster and simpler; then automated trend and performance analysis allows the user to see anomalies immediately; finally, this informs employee behaviour and decisions and allows immediate corrective actions.
  •
the article suggests the different ways technology contributes into solving one of the issues production companies face which is managing waste. by suggesting different aspects to limit the negative outcomes of the production also to help in overcoming the challenges in the area. the article also emphasize the importance of data collection and utilization to enhance the efficiency in the industry.

  • The newer cameras can count the number of objects or people, including tracking motion through an exit – going the right or wrong way.
  • he biggest impact, though, comes from the clarity of images, upgrading from fuzzy, black-and-white pictures to high-definition color.
  • “Really good pictures have helped us solve a lot of crimes -- identity theft, people stealing things inside buildings, or break-ins to the residence halls,” says Banuelos. “You can’t cover it up, because we have the video footage.”
  •
University of Wisconsin at Madison has partnered up with Physical Plant and the UW police department to upgrade their security system. Instead of the traditional hardwired cameras the university has switched to wireless cameras which should offer more benefits. The wireless cameras will allow all the cameras to be seen at one location instead of at the specific buildings or nearby locations. The new cameras are now color instead of black and white and have a highly upgraded motion sensor compared to the old ones. I think these cameras will help the university and help them bring the crime rate down around campus.

Computer on your desk is contributing to global warming? That is not a joke! Actually, most people don't appreciate that fact. It is true that if the electricity comes from coal power plant it produces as much CO2 as a sports utility vehicle! Especial, the total electricity that needed to transmit the trillions of spam emails sent annually equals the amount required to power over two million homes in the US. Unbelievable! As millions more go online each year, which means there comes out more electricity needed and produce more CO2. As the researcher's saying, it becomes part of the whole sustainability picture.

Google and The Future of Event Tech - 0 views

  • During I/O, the annual developer conference, Google made several announcements that are set to have an impact on how we use technology at events.
  • Google Glass is the gadget of the moment

  • Google announced that YouTube Live will be available to all Partners in good standing. This is quite massive. If you’ve been a regular YouTube user and gained the Partner status you will be able to stream events live.
  • Secondly livestreaming is, as Sam Sheffer of The Verge explains, the most logic use of Glass thanks to hangout integration.
  • Google planted 525 powered sensors around the halls of San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center, and began collecting data
  • Crowd management and control is one of the most delicate issues in the industry. It looks like this technology could provide real time data to understand how the crowd is moving during the event.
  • While some of the discussed tech probably won’t make an event near you anytime soon, some other announcements will have an immediate impact on how you execute your event.
  •
Google made several announcements at a developer conference that could bring drastic changes to event technology, both in the immediate future and further down the line. One of Google's latest gadgets is Google Glass. There has been much talk about both it's functionality and its detractors. However, it is highly functional for events. It allows you to scan tickets upon entry and it also allows you the ability to send a live feed of the event. This is advantageous for those who want to go to events but are not able to attend in person, for whatever reason and is ideal for Google Plus hangout integration. Google also announced that Youtube Live (live streaming on Youtube) would be available to all partners in good standing. Before, live-streaming on Youtube was only available to certain partners. So Glass now has greater potential to be used by more partners to live stream to Youtube. Lastly, Google planted sensors all around the convention center where the conference took place, and collected data (temperature, humidity, light, pressure (including nearby footfalls), motion, air quality and both RF and ambient noise) to study the crowd and how they moved around the conference. Crowd management and control is a delicate issue and this technology could give real time data into what the crowd is doing.

Their goals are toe become socially, economically, and environmentally responsible. Some of the initiatives that they have started on the property include reclaiming heat from the kitchen refrigerator to preheat water, as well as combined heat and power plant (CHP). The CHP chip uses heat generated from a gas engine which is used to heat the building and promote hot water. This CHP chip produces 90% of our summer cooling and 50% of winter heating. Guest rooms on property have Inncom AC and heat systems which help control the temperatures in the room. The property has LED lighting and they use metering and water bottling plant systems, food waste recycling.

  • and not be tempted to pillage their region’s natural resource base.
  •
This short article briefly discusses some of the ways in which hotels are taking more initiatives to be eco friendly and practice sustainability. This article also lists a number of statistics to support its claims. For example, according to the article, "150-room hotel can conserve 72,000 gallons of water and 480 gallons of laundry soap every year by placing the cards in its guest rooms". The cards that the article is referring to are the little "to save the planet" cards you may see when you check into a hotel in your bathroom, usually near your towels. In fact, the "green cards" are so important to hotels that some companies actually provide them for you so you don't have to make them yourself (for a small fee of course) such as the Green Hotels Association that the article discusses. One of my favorite parts of the article is the "10 Million Trees" initiative taken on by the Four Seasons. According to the article, "The hotel chain is celebrating its 50th anniversary by planting 10 million trees across the 34 countries in which it operates with the hope that the effort will help combat deforestation and global warming and attract more customers concerned about the state of the planet". This concept is truly amazing to me and it definitely should be an aid to help others in learning why "going green" is such a major deal and how seriously it effects not only our futures, but our everyday lives. The article wraps up talking about eco lodges in partnership with natives and why that is important when travelers are passing by.
  •
Hotels are going beyond just encouraging guests to reuse linens and towels. The WTTC and Green Hotel Association are making an effort to implement green initiatives in the industry.
