Title: Should Schools do Random Drug Testing? Author: Graham Boyd Date Published: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: This helped support why random drug testing should and shouldn't be done. It was a sweet resource to be able to use for my paper and was very relevant to it. How This Influenced My Thinking: The reason for why it should be done never even crossed my mind! Title: Applications and Utility of Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory Author: Brian Lewthwaite (ed.) Date Published: Spring 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This journal from the Manitoba Education Research Network, summarizes several research studies that apply Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory. One of the studies, The Importance of Local Environment for Promoting Student Engagement in Learning by Janet McVittie and Danette Senterre, is particularly interesting and relevant. This is a direct application of how the microsystems outside the classroom affect the microsystem of the classroom, and how the mesosystems and exosystems affect classroom engagement. When children come into the classroom, they bring with them the values and habits of their exosystem and participate in their classroom based on how they are situated in their other microsystems. (McVittie & Senterre) How This Influenced My Thinking: Based on personal experiences, I can understand how our circumstances in our mesosystems and Microsystems can affect our performance in school. At the age of 14, I became and orphan when my only parent died. In retrospect, this event and the subsequent events that resulted from it deeply affected my academic progress. In other words, the tragic events in my family microsystem had a major impact on my school microsystem, as well as on my various mesosystems. Credibility of Source: The University of Manitoba Centre for Research in Youth, Science Teaching and Learning seems like a highly credible source.

Title: Parenting styles/ Child temperaments : The match Author: Anita Gurian, PhD Date Published: Why Relevant and Summary: Its relevant because she talks not only but the child temperaments but about the types of parenting styles there are and how some styles might be good for certain temperaments. How to use your type of parenting style for your child's temperament. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helps my thinking because I'm able to see what kind of parenting style I have, what the temperaments of my children are and how I can match them so that my children are succeeding in life. Credibility of Source: I think its credible, a doctor wrote it along with supporting evidence of research.

How This Influenced My Thinking: I feel like I can better recognize signs of ADHD after reading this Credibility of Source: credible-from kidshealth.org, I have found them to be very credible with their information.

Title: Suicidal Thoughts More Common in Kids With Autism: Study Date: 3/21/2013 Author: Amy Norton Why relevant and summary: This article reports on the findings of a scientific study published on the "Research in Autism Spectrum disorders" journal, that children on the spectrum have a higher chance of contemplating or thinking about suicide than their typical peers. This is especially pronounced in those families where the mothers are depressed as well and bulling happens in school. The author reports on both sides which support and are against such findings. How has this changed my thinking: As a mother of a child on the spectrum I am really concerned and interested in finding out how this disorder will affect him, as he grows and what can i do to help. Source credibility: This article was published on an online news magazine and reports findings published in an academic journal.

Title: Obese Kids More Vulnerable to Bullies Author: Harding, A. Date published:2010 Summary and Why Relevant: Explains how kids who are obese are much more likely to be bullied then children at an average weight. How this influenced my thinking: I always knew children who are overweight are more likely to be made fun of, but i was surprised at how obesity has doubled in children over the past 20 years. Credibility of source: From CNN so i think it is credible.

Title: Bedtime Story: Co-sleeping Research Author: James J. McKenna Ph.D. Date Published: October 1997 Why Relevant and Summary: This article brings up research about cosleeping (not from the past 10 years sadly). It brings up the links with SIDS and the benefits to the mother and child who practice co-sleeping. How this influenced my thinking: These findings showed me that there are benefits to co-sleeping and that bonding can take place while sleeping. Credibility of source: Ph.D. Research done at University of California's Irvine School of Medicine.
