    Title: Helping Your Child Through a Divorce Author: Michelle New, PhD Date Published: Updated 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This site if very helpful because it gives several examples of how one can tell ones child that they are going through a divorce. It also goes through the different ages in children and how they might react to the divorce. Overall, this article is great for helping one cope with a divorce as well as ways to help your child cope with a divorce without making much damage. How this influenced my thinking: My parent are still together, so I was never exposed to any divorce issues, but I do remember having friends whose parents were divorced so I knew it was a hard process especially for my friends. Because I don't talk to my high school friends anymore, I honestly wasn't sure what the negative outcomes were of a divorce, but after reading this site all of the pain and sorrow from my friends came back. Everything that was mentioned especially about teens reactions were the way that my friends reacted during their parent's divorce. Credibility: This site seems to be credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking: There were some great tips on parenting after the divorce and some great example on how to help your child cope with the situation. It discusses how to break the news to them, giving them consistency, how to parent as single parents, and not bringing arguements to them. The main focus is on child and adolescent development. It compares Urie's model to other theoris of development. This is a great starting point if you want to learn about Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg and Urie Bronfenbrenner. How This Influenced My Thinking: From this model I understood that how a child develops is influenced from the systems in the child's life. However, when taking microsystem into consideration and the important people in the child's life, the way the child acts towards the microsystem (people) also influences how those people will act towards the child. Credibility of Source: No citations or references. Came from a mental help site.

It describes the different traits of temperament and how to react to them. How this Influenced my Thinking: I wasn't aware of how many various traits a child can have that can determine their temperament, i generally believed you either had a well-behaved child, or a fussy child. This gives more dimension to temperament and shows how there are varying levels to a temperament as well. Credibility of Source: Has references; linked to Ohio State University; somewhat dated information, but information that is still relevant.

She went into much more depth explaining not only the influences but also why it is likely to influence a child's development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article didn't influence my thinking one way or another, because I found the same information in our textbook, but it did help me to understand the model in more depth because she thoroughly explained everything. Why Relevant and Summary: This article gives a good description of the different temperaments and different parenting skills you could use based on the temperament. How this influenced my thinking: I used to think that there was only one way to parent and what worked for one child would work for all but this showed me that by understanding your child's temperament you can develop a much more effective way to parent. How this influenced my thinking: As a mother of two children (fairly recently out of the toddler stage) this gave me quite a bit to reflect on as far as my own parenting and how I can make improvements going forward should I ever have more children, and it would likely influence any advice I may give out to parents of toddlers.     Title: Parenting Styles: The Four Styles of Parenting Author: Kendra Cherry Date Published: no date Why Relevant and Summary: This articles gives a brief and to the point overview of the four parenting styles identified by Diana Baumrind consistent with two dimensions of parenting recognized: demandingness and responsiveness. It goes over the impact that each parenting style could or would be more likely to have on a child and explains the many factors that impact why there are different styles and why parents don't just all raise their children the same . (ie personality, family size, parental background, socioeconomic status, educational level and religion.) How This Influenced My Thinking: This gave a clear, straightforward description of the four distinct parenting styles. It has made me think that when I am raising a child that I need to make sure that I remain an authoritative and not cross the line to authoritarian or even the permissive parent. I'm not afraid to admit that I'm not perfect and this has made me realize how extremely important it is to be aware of how I respond or control situations while helping my child develop in a healthy manner.
