How Eastern and Western Cultures Tackle Learning Author : Ali Spiegel Date : 11/12/2012 Link : http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2012/11/12/164793058/struggle-for-smarts-how-eastern-and-western-cultures-tackle-learning Why Relevant and Summary: Points out a big difference between Eastern and Western cultures regarding intelligence and learning. Eastern cultures believe that struggling through a problem is "good" and shows emotional strength. They believe intelligence is something that anyone can obtain through hard work and persistence. Western culture tends to view intelligence as innate. And if you have to struggle at something, then you're simply not good at it, and that's that. How This Influenced My Thinking: Once this was pointed out to me, it seemed very apparent to me. Considering I grew up with an Asian mom and many Asian friends, I felt that this generalization held some truth to it.

Date Published: 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: The journalist and mother expounds upon the different research and studies that give insight into what a fetus experiences and learns in-utero. How This Influenced My Thinking: The last part of this talk discusses the "Hunger Winter" study and how prenatal exposure to famine effected health in adult life, and how 9/11 fetuses of mother who experienced the trauma, had babies with greater susceptibility to PTSD. Credibility of Source: Highly credible with verifiable references

Title: Annie Murphy Paul: What we learn before we're born Author: Annie Murphy Paul. Date Published: Nov. 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: As a science reporter and mother Paul combined her experience as a pregnant woman with her love of research to write about what a fetus is learning in the womb and what a mother teaches through their shared experience. How This Influenced My Thinking: there was a lot of interesting and pertinent information shared within this video. The shared experiences of a mother are vast. A fetus learns from a mother's voice, food preferences, language and culture to environmental events such as famine, war, fear and stress.

Title: Avoiding Caregiver Burnout Author: Donna Cardillo, RN, MA Date Published: 4/22/11 Why relevant and Summary: This article gives plenty of valuable easy to process information and tips on how to avoid caregiver burnout. How this influenced my thinking: This information strengthened my awareness about how important it is for  a caregiver to take care of themselves. Credibility of source: this information supported previous information and sources I was already familiar with.

Title: Midlife Crisis: Transition or Depression Author: Kathleen Doheny Date Published: 11/11/09 Why Relevant and Summary: This talks all about the "norm" of the midlife crisis…its origins and what causes it. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped me understand what actually leads to a midlife crisis. Credibility of Source:WebMD

Title: Caregiver Lives Rerouted Yet Enriched By Aging Parents Author: Sarah LeTrent Date Published: December 11, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: Provides actual accounts of experiences with caregiving for older relatives/parents. Identifies all the hassles that can come with taking on the responsibility but also recognizes all the rewards and the enriching, meaningful experience it can be. How This Influenced My Thinking: It forced me to look at the situation--caregiving for an elderly parent/parents-- from both perspectives. I was able to understand how it affects both the children and the parents and able to understand the pros and cons. Credibility of Source: CNN News-- pretty credible.

Title: Breastfeeding Across Cultures Author: Keith Goetzman Date: 8/11/2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This just gives an example of the difference between cultures on the topic of breastfeeding in public, or just breastfeeding in general. This gives an example of Mongolian cultural differences. How This Influenced my Thinking: It showed me how different cultures vary, and how something labeled as "taboo" in our culture is completely normal for another.

Title: How Does Religion Affect the Lives of Adolescents? Date: 11-30-2005 Author: Jennifer Elliot Summary and why important: This was an excellent article about religion and adolescence. It was well written, had great sources, it taped onto this issue from all the sides. It talked about the media's influence, how recent religious scandal might or have affected faith in our young generation and it explained that religion is one of the factors that influences adolescents to make the right choices and not the only one. How it has change my thinking: I liked this article because it seemed impartial, it did not glorify or vilify those who practice religion and those who do not. It was realistic, it explained some great concepts, and everything was backed by research. Credibility: the author has a BS in Mass Communication, a BS in Psychology and is a Certified Mental Health Technician. This article was published on yahoo! voices which is a great website with a good reputation.

Title: Advance Medical Directives Author: S. Nabili Date Published: 5.10.11 Summary and Why Relenent: This article covers power of attorney, living wills, and healthcare proxies. It expalins what all of these documents are for. How This Influenced My Thinking: It was very helpful to me as I am going through this with my father. I am going to call him tomorrow so we can get these documents in order. Credibility of Source: Good. Written by a MD

Title: Childhood Development in the Hispanic Culture Author: unkown Date Published:May 11, 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: It's relevant because it focuses on what the Hispanic culture finds as important when it comes to parenting a toddler, and their styles of parenting. How This Influenced My Thinking: This helped back-up my ideas. Credibility of Source: It seems credible. It has all the sources and links they used on the bottom of the page, as well as on the images and videos used.

Why Relevant and summary: This article explains what each parenting style consists of. it has questions to help readers determine what parenting style they might be using. it gives good examples of each style and a situation in which you would be reacting, and it gives strengths and weaknesses of each as well. How this changed my Thinking: This backed up the information I already was aware of, but it did clarify some things. Title: Obese Children Twice as Likely to Die Before 55 Author:COURTNEY HUTCHISON and MICHELLE SCHLIEF Date Published: Feb. 11, 2010 Summary/Why Relevant: This article discusses a recent study done on children whom were obese. The stud found that over weight children were put at more risk for more health complications therefore more likely to die before the age of 55. How it influenced my thinking: This article made me more aware of the risk factors that children face when over weight. Credibility: Very. The authors provide citations for the research study as well as other resources.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped me begin to plan and change my styles of life in order to age successfully. Credibility of Source: Very credible
