Title: Empathy, Mindblindness, and Theory of Mind Author: Lynne Soraya Date Published: May 19, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: An excellent overview of Theory of mind. The article also explains how researchers test for theory of mind. It links theory of mind to the concept of Empathy, and explores whether people with Asperger's lack empathy or simply the ability to read social cues. Several excellent links, quotes, and a diagram explaining how the topic is researched. How This Influenced My Thinking: I know of several families that have children diagnosed with Asperger's. The article raises the possibility that those children with Asperger's could benefit from learning how to read social cues, and that their ability to empathize could be fine. Better interpretation of social cues would help them with their theory of mind regarding how others feel. Credibility of Source: Comes from a published magazine, Psychology Today. Likely to be fairly credible.

Title: High functioning autism in adults, a personal perspective Author: Steve Date Published: 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: A high-functioning autistic man gives his perspective on living with autism. This is relevant because it touches upon theory of mind (subtly) and connects it with autism. How This Influenced My Thinking: This video was powerful to me because Steve was able to express his perspective on the world even though he says he does not understand other people's perspectives… I really liked the way he described it. Title: The Tribal Mind: Moral Reasoning and Public Discourse Author: Arnold Kling Date Published: April 26, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: As soon as I saw this article I thought it was great. In a very interesting way it explain what moral reasoning is and how it is developed, influenced upon and used in today's complicated world. It taps on issues that we are faced with daily, especially coming after a presidential election where the "morals" of each side where being discussed and with a fierce public discourse. This essay also discusses some great books written about the topic and the author does a great job at explaining how our own personal moral values and beliefs are used to justify our behavior and manipulate others; and also how these moral decisions are very often based on instinct and rapid judgment rather than rational thought. The author maintains the position that even though we have come along as a society we still behave sometimes in tribal manner, and that goes not only for how we conduct business or personal relationships but also how this great country of ours is run. How This Influenced My Thinking: As a young person, and as a mother of two young boys, I took in all the information that I got from this article; I think I am going to read it again and also read the books that were used to support some of the thinking behind it. I believe that when someone truly understand where someone else is coming from it will be easier to comprehend their thinking and the commitment that they have to their moral compass. Also interesting to find out was how often rushed moral judgment occurs in our society, and how that directly impact all of us. It was a great article with a great deal of food for thought. How This Influenced My Thinking:I never considered water birth or a midwife and it has opened my mind to these possibilities.  Credibility of Source:Failrly credible 

Title:Understanding Your Child's Temperament Author:Kathy K. Oliver, M.S Date Published: 2002 (?) Why Relevant and Summary: This covers the basics of what temperament is, and how to tell what temperament a child might fall under. It describes the different traits of temperament and how to react to them. How this Influenced my Thinking: I wasn't aware of how many various traits a child can have that can determine their temperament, i generally believed you either had a well-behaved child, or a fussy child. This gives more dimension to temperament and shows how there are varying levels to a temperament as well. Credibility of Source: Has references; linked to Ohio State University; somewhat dated information, but information that is still relevant.

Title: Parenting styles/ Child temperaments : The match Author: Anita Gurian, PhD Date Published: Why Relevant and Summary: Its relevant because she talks not only but the child temperaments but about the types of parenting styles there are and how some styles might be good for certain temperaments. How to use your type of parenting style for your child's temperament. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helps my thinking because I'm able to see what kind of parenting style I have, what the temperaments of my children are and how I can match them so that my children are succeeding in life. Credibility of Source: I think its credible, a doctor wrote it along with supporting evidence of research.

Author: Rachel Nunez Date Published: Oct 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: It's relevant because it discusses what other uses toys have, other than entertainment. It talks about how certain toys can help with their development, and use of imagination. How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped back up what I had in mind. Credibility of Source: It seems credible. It has several other links incase one is interested in learning more about a specific or different subject.

How This Influenced My Thinking: Makes the idea of ZPD and scaffolding very clear in my mind and reinforced the importance of this idea. Credibility of Source: Credible- published by The Canadian Center of Science and Education

Title: Goodness of Fit: The Challenge of Parenting Gifted Children Author: Andrew Mahoney Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant because it talks about how a parent should be prepared according to the child. It also discusses a wide range of what to keep in mind when it comes to a child's temperament. How this influenced my thinking: This changed the way I think because it goes in detail how truly prepared a parent has to be. Credibility of source: it seems reliable it has refrences and cites everything.

Title:What is a schema? Author:Kendra Cherry Date Published:n.d. Why Relevant and Summary:This article is relevant because it describes what a schema is. This goes into the discussion of cognition and toys and how infants learn from their environment. Children make schemas, how we organize and process information, in order to make sense of things. However, for children, assimilation and accomodation are necessary since they are constantly learning and can confuse things. How This Influenced My Thinking:Schemas are a good learning tool, but can also make learning difficult. It is important to be open minded in order to take in new information. Title: Nature, Nurture and Attention Deficit Author: ALIYAH BARUCHIN Date Published: 3/12/08 Why Relevant and Summary: I was curious about whether nature or nurture is responsible for ADHD. This article was an interview with Susan Smalley, Ph.D., is a professor in the department of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and director of its Mindful Awareness Research Center. How this influenced my thinking: I was fascinated to find out about some of the environmental factors that show increased lecels of ADHD. Credibility: I'm on the fence. The doctor seems credible, but I am not sure about the writer.

Title: My Autism and Me Author: "tordajav" Date Published: Nov. 12, 2011 Why relevant and summary: This is a great short video/ documentary narrated by a young girl diagnosed with Asperger's named Rosie. She is very knowledgeable and gives a beautiful perspective. 

Title: Suicidal Thoughts More Common in Kids With Autism: Study Date: 3/21/2013 Author: Amy Norton Why relevant and summary: This article reports on the findings of a scientific study published on the "Research in Autism Spectrum disorders" journal, that children on the spectrum have a higher chance of contemplating or thinking about suicide than their typical peers. This is especially pronounced in those families where the mothers are depressed as well and bulling happens in school. The author reports on both sides which support and are against such findings. How has this changed my thinking: As a mother of a child on the spectrum I am really concerned and interested in finding out how this disorder will affect him, as he grows and what can i do to help. Source credibility: This article was published on an online news magazine and reports findings published in an academic journal.

Title: Cosleeping Around The World Author:James J. McKenna, Ph.D. Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This webpage is very helpful if one is doing their Assignment on Co-sleeping It gives examples of countries who practice co-sleeping which involves the majority of the countries including the United States. Many people believe Americans don't practice co-sleeping but research shows that many Americans do. How This Influenced My Thinking: This webpage definitely helped me be more open about other cultures. I believed that only Latino families practiced co-sleeping, but it turns out that the majority of the world practices co-sleeping. Credibility of Source: This source seems credible due to the references that were used

Makenna Date Published:ND Why Relevant and Summary: This website was relevant to the subject i was writing about because it discussed co-sleeping across different cultures. It also talked about why co-sleeping is beneficial, what cultures favor it, and even provided a few statistics of the benefits of co-sleeping, and how common it is in the United States. How This Influenced My Thinking: This website didn't influence my thinking much because it spoke very highly of co-sleeping and i am already an advocate of it. Credibility of Source: The site seems credible because the information was backed with references.

One mark down for brevity. How This Influenced My Thinking: I had no idea that what I did naturally was a thing of controversy. I am glad that other cultures, including our own, practice co-sleeping. Credibility of Source: Very high

Title: Baby Brain Food Author: None Date Published: 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: Provides information on optimal nutrition for healthy brain development in infants. Though this particular article focuses on nutrition that is beneficial for the brain, the website as a whole places an emphasis on helping parents to raise bright, intelligent kids from a very early age. How This Influenced My Thinking: It emphasized how even the simplest of activities makes an imprint on a baby's mind. Credibility of Source: good. Has world-wide influence.

Title: Benefits of Cosleeping Author: API Staff Why Relevant and Summary: This article shares the benefits of cosleeping long term and short term. They also back up their information with research and scientific studies. How it Influenced My Thinking: I always thought cosleeping was unusual and did not know of many benefits, but this article changed my mind. Credibility :This is an international parenting group that does research on many child rearing and development topics.

Title: Puberty Author: No Author Date Published: Last updated October 13, 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is published on .gov website and provides, in depth information about the changes that specifically happen to girls. It talks about, changes in body shape, breasts, body hair and changes going on in the mind. It talks about menarche, getting enough sleep, sexuality, dealing with dating etc. Most importantly, the website talks about protecting yourself, if your sexually active and how important it is to seek medical care such as seeing a gynocologist. How This Influenced My Thinking: I think it is great that this information is presented appropriately for young girls to utilize and educate themselves on what is going on within their bodies as well as reassuring them that this is all normal and happens to all of us. I'm glad that this information is readily available to girls that perhaps do not have relationships with their parents to discuss these topics. Credibility of Source: Yes, this website is managed by : The Office of Woman's Health, Office of Assistant Secretary for Health and the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Title: How Does Religion Affect the Lives of Adolescents? Date: 11-30-2005 Author: Jennifer Elliot Summary and why important: This was an excellent article about religion and adolescence. It was well written, had great sources, it taped onto this issue from all the sides. It talked about the media's influence, how recent religious scandal might or have affected faith in our young generation and it explained that religion is one of the factors that influences adolescents to make the right choices and not the only one. How it has change my thinking: I liked this article because it seemed impartial, it did not glorify or vilify those who practice religion and those who do not. It was realistic, it explained some great concepts, and everything was backed by research. Credibility: the author has a BS in Mass Communication, a BS in Psychology and is a Certified Mental Health Technician. This article was published on yahoo! voices which is a great website with a good reputation.

Title: Should Schools do Random Drug Testing? Author: Graham Boyd Date Published: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: This helped support why random drug testing should and shouldn't be done. It was a sweet resource to be able to use for my paper and was very relevant to it. How This Influenced My Thinking: The reason for why it should be done never even crossed my mind! Credibility of Source: It is from New York Times so I think it's credible!

Title: 7 Tips for a Successful Marriage Author: Tim Dowling Date: 8 February 2013 Why relevant and summary: This article provides seven solid tips for maintaining a healthy and successful marriage. For example, Dowling says, "go to bed angry if you want to" because you're better off getting a good night's sleep before tackling the conflict again. Another good tip is to remember that every relationship is unique and it is damaging to compare yours to other relationships. I think the other gives some pretty solid, yet basic marriage advice that couples considering marriage should read. How this influenced my thinking: I have been married and divorced, and am in another relationship that is progressing toward marriage. I hope to avoid the mistakes made in my first marriage, so articles like this one apply directly to my personal life. However, no matter how good the advice is, you've got to make sure you're marrying someone you can absolutely be with through thick and thin. This type of advice is for couples that are certain that they are marrying someone they are truly compatible with long-term. Credibility of source: decent. Guardian (UK) article.
