Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory Author: Dede Paquette and John Ryan Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: Explains Bronfenbrenner's theory and connects it to modern child development and compares this to child development when the economy was more industrial, less technological. It also explains Bronfenbrenner's concerns with our technological world. The 5th page looks at the human body as a part of a person's microsystem, which was fascinating, especially since the textbook doesn't seem to consider this. How This Influenced My Thinking: Introduced the idea of the human body as being part of the microsystem - new to me! Also, I learned that this model can play a big role in influencing public policies, which is refreshing because as a student, it's easy to get caught up in this thinking that the classroom stuff isn't relevant or doesn't easily apply to the real world… but it can! Credibility of Source: Pretty good - the work cites a lot of educational resources, and I read the company profile, which seems to be run by qualified people.

As well as stating what the theory is, the site also goes over in detail, all the different systems associated with Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory. There is also an illustration with various terms that provides links to sites that explain the implications of each theory. How it influenced my thinking: This site influenced my thinking in a positive way because it broke down what each system was, what it entailed, and gave examples of what was being discussed. Credibility of source: The source is very credible and is riddled with citations and works cited pages. The link to it also ends in usd.edu which means it is probably a site made by colleges for colleges.

Although its helpful when deciding on what types of childbirths to use it does not go into too much detail about each of the methods.

It is relevant to "child birth and culture" because it goes over different methods of birth that not only American cultures use, but other cultures as well. There is a lot of interesting information that is provided in the website and it's also very insightful. author: Baby zone editors Date published: ND How this influenced my thinking: This article really opened my eyes to various types of child birth and the pros and cons that each one has. I had never really considered any other type of birth besides medicated birth in a hospital, but it was very interesting to read about the benefits of water birth. Credibility of source: The source seems to be credible. It was written by the editors of Disney.

Eastern cultures believe that struggling through a problem is "good" and shows emotional strength. They believe intelligence is something that anyone can obtain through hard work and persistence. Western culture tends to view intelligence as innate. And if you have to struggle at something, then you're simply not good at it, and that's that. How This Influenced My Thinking: Once this was pointed out to me, it seemed very apparent to me. Considering I grew up with an Asian mom and many Asian friends, I felt that this generalization held some truth to it.

Title:Readiness to change: A longitudinal study of changes in adult identity Author:Kristine Anthis , Joseph C. LaVoie Date Published: 2008 Why Relevant: This is a research article from the journal of research in personality which is a great source to begin with in regards to personality theory. This research article is a great example of the scientific research method and a great example of a longitudinal study. Its focus is also relevant to my topic which is identity formation and more specifically measures adult's readiness to change and its influence on identity formation How this influenced my thinking: I found the age range of the participants 22-60 to be interesting. It shines a light on the fact that identity it always changing no matter what age and stage in life a person is. I also found it interesting that they came up with two ways to measure readiness to change and that they discovered this to be a player in identity formation during adulthood. Credibility:High

Title: Breastfeeding Benefits Your Baby's Immune System Author: N/A Date Published:1/12/12 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant because it stresses the pros to breast feeding. It especially highlights its capabilities to stop disease and build up the immune system. How This Influenced My Thinking: This helped me more scientifically understand why breast milk helps build up our immune systems with the antibodies, white blood cells, etc. Credibility of Source: healthy children's website seems reliable.

After this general presentation breaks it down to its components and starts analyzing each layer of the ecological systems theory starting with the body and the brain of the child, which reflects to Bronfenbrenner's revised name for his theory from ecological to bioecological. Even though the material is a little bit old, it is definitely not outdated; it taps on important issues going on in our schools especially with the preschool system that serves underprivileged children. Author: Kid's Health Date Published: Last Updated 10/12 Why Relevant and Summary: This website gives an explanation of how early puberty is seen in today's children. It goes into detail on the consequences of starting puberty at a young age, such as engaging in risky behavior and in growth problems. How This Influenced My Thinking: This website definitely made me aware of how children as young as seven are starting puberty. As a kid one usually looks up to kids who have a deep voice or girls who develop breast early, and this website made me realize that those kids whom everyone admires, are at risk of having health problems later on in life. Credibility of Source: This website seems to be credible because it does give a lot of information about kids health, and it was also reviewed by a M.D.

It discusses the facts of what will be happening to the body as a women ages and how to deal with accepting the fact that changes are happening. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article discusses many aspects in ones life that can affect the way a women feels about herself at 50. It made a good point that if you have compulsive thoughts about aging you will start to drive yourself crazy - a thought that will make you feel like you are living to the tic-toc of the clock. Time isn't slipping away rather this is the time to be you and be happy. Credibility of Source: Web MD Website

Title: The Art of Aging Gracefully Author: Katherine Kam Date: 2013 Why Relevant : Talks about the aging stages and encouraging of women can overcome it and what they can do when they finally do accept it. How this influenced me: It helps me to look at my life because I fear turning 30! I can't imagine the types of things I may feel when I get to my 40's. But this helps me to boost up my confidence level and to really want to live life at that stage. Credibility: Not sure but like the info.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It makes me think that ADHD is way more common than I realized. Credibility of Source :It is a credible source- it comes from The University of Maryland Medical Center. Has many repitable sources listed.

Title: Nature vs Nurture: Outcome Depends on Where You Live Author: Nick Collins Date Published: 12 June 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This study is actually quite relevant, but I ranked it '6' simply due to the fact that it is based solely on research done in the UK. This article outlines a recent study that compared 6759 pairs of identical and non-identical twins across the UK, in the hopes of determining whether their genes or their environment was more important. The outcome: it depends where you live. Some areas were dubbed 'environemental hotspots' for certain traits, where in other areas the same traits were purely caused by genetics. Be sure to see the video maps at the bottom of the article. How This Influenced My Thinking: I think the nature vs nurture debate is rather subjective. Much of it is based in opinion, but this particular study shows that many things can impact our phenotype. I'm of the opinion that both genetics and environment contribute. For example, I met my biological father for the first time when I was 28 years old. We were surprised to discover that although we were literally strangers, we look very much alike, both have an affinity for foreign languages, both enjoy traveling and adventure, and we enjoy similar types of food. Additionally, I found out that my grandfather was an oral surgeon in Holland during WWII. This was particularly interesting because I've always had a mild fascination with dentistry and oral hygiene! It is actually useful information that I found to be interesting because there are things that even I did not know. How this Influenced My Thinking: It influenced my thinking by making me realize that middle childhood was perhaps the most important time in a child's life that mattered the most to them. looking back now at y middle childhood I can see why it was so important. that's the period in time where things changed for me and I know changed for every other kid around me. Credibility: It is from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, which is a Government Website.

It also gives examples of the five different concepts and applies it to adolescent's behavior. How This Influenced My Thinking: This blog helped me make the relationship between the five stages not only a child's perspective but in an adolescents perspective. Credibility of Source: I wouldn't call this blog very credible but it gives good examples of the five concepts of the theory.

Title: Prenatal Massage - Many Benefits for Mom and Baby Author: Caroline Vigery, CMT Date Published: September 12, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article explains the many benefits for both mother and baby from receiving Prenatal Massage. For mom it includes relaxation and stress reduction, reduction of pain and strains, improvement of blood circulation, preparation for labor, and improvement of respiratory and GI functions. Baby also receives improved blood circulation, healthy tissue, flexible joints and muscles during the pregnancy and labor. How This Influenced My Thinking: Prior to finding this article, I did not know that this was something that mothers did to improve health during pregnancy. I think that it is a great idea and I plan to receive massages too if and when I am pregnant. Credibility of Source: Pretty credible, it is a yoga business so they are more likely to point out the positive effects to make more business, but the article seems thorough and well written.

This article was an interview with Susan Smalley, Ph.D., is a professor in the department of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and director of its Mindful Awareness Research Center. How this influenced my thinking: I was fascinated to find out about some of the environmental factors that show increased lecels of ADHD. Credibility: I'm on the fence. The doctor seems credible, but I am not sure about the writer.

Very useful information, background and other wise. How This Influenced My Thinking: Didn't, but it was very interesting to read some of the background information . Credibility of Source: Credible, based on common sense as well as references from history.
