Avatars & 3D Viewers in Second Life & OpenSim Virtual Worlds - YouTube - 0 views

  •
YouTube channel - Avatars & 3D Viewers in SL and OS VWs. You are creating a Second Life account / avatar... so, what SL Viewer should you use? SL Viewer Version 3, 2, 1.23 or one of the alternate 3rd party viewers such as Imprudence or Phoenix. I'll go for Imprudence since I'm on a mac and if you are accessing second life and OpenSim, it is the only option for me on a mac. Good series of vidtuts from UCDavis

This is another great SL site for beginners. It helps newcomers and people with disabilities. Text on signs are large and easy to read on the boards. It is very much like Discovery Island. It walks you through the simple directions of flying, changing your avatar, IM'ing, etc. I was able to get L$10! There is a place for free stuff also. When I arrived, I looked around, then found a balloon and took a tour. I also went to an auditorium dedicated to Karen Gams. She was instrumental in helping support groups, education for stroke survivors, and people with autism. While searching around, I heard voices. It sounded like a radio show. This is a great site for beginners as well as people with disabilities. If using SL to teach, I would definitely use this site to aid in helping beginners to become more fluent in SL.

Can people actually 'own' virtual land? - CNN.com - 0 views

  •
Potential legal issues dealing with "land" ownership in SL. Not sure what this means for the future, but as the article states, vitrual world are basically lawless. It compares the legality of virtual world to the 16th century. The only problem with this comparison, is that in the 1500s people were being murdered for only being suspected of wrongdoing (or in the case of Muslims and Jews, "wrongbeing"). SL does seem like an anything goes type of place... I wonder how this pending legislation will affect SL. I'm not sure a federal, state or local government has any rights over a virtual space. have to wait to see the results of this legislation.

Although ISTE has been mentioned several times in the Diigo group, I thought this link was important to mention since it is an actual ISTE presentation/ interview done in Second Life. I found it really exciting to listen and watch SL used in meaningful educational way. It was linked to Treet.TV, where more SL shows (that might not be educational) can be seen.

Witnessing History - A Teen Second Life Exhibit - 0 views

I found this YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGMH_1VnnaY) about a virtual museum exhibit created by teens. It showcases "Kristallnacht," or "The Night of Broken Glass" from the holocaust. Teens from the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. worked with teens from New York and museum staff via Skype, SL, & phone (sound familiar, COMETEERs?) to discuss issues, storyboard, and even create a design document (future COMETEERs!) to create the exhibit in SL. Interestingly, it seems that the build was done by an SL company called "Digital Refinery," "...an all teen in-world development company," headed by a 15 year old CEO. Teens visiting the site are placed in the role of an investigative reporter in order to find out what people did during Kristallnacht. They can click on cutouts of people to get information and learn about the choices that ordinary people faced during this event. Visitors also observe the environment; broken storefront windows, a before & after Kristallnacht replica of a synagogue, and just general destruction of the Jewish community. When they are done, they reflect, discuss and write about what they have seen & learned, and post notecards to share their experiences. I love that this is all built by teens, but that they also had to work with adults in RL to learn how to cooperate and communicate intelligently. I am big on making history interactive, otherwise it just seems boring to many kids. SL holds so much potential for this sort of activity; time for textbook companies to look into this instead of making ridiculously expensive, environmentally unfriendly textbooks that bore kids to tears. Ok, I know I'm dreaming, after all, if the textbooks weren't expensive, those companies would go out of business. Hmm.

Like my last post, I found this "show" on Treet.tv as well. A great forum start with tons of excellent screencasts of SL interviews and presentations. The last few episodes of the show included:" 5 years of Creative Research in SL," " Maslow's Hierarchical Hideaway in SL," Teaching Math in Virtual Worlds," "Learning 3D: A New Educational Dimension," and "WoW (World of Warcraft) in Schools.

Since our group is presenting on a piece of literature, I thought this was nice to see SLURL in action representing Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. " You can go through Capt. Nemo's sub! I can see an endless use of SL to replicate settings from books, that could really add to reading comprehension.

The University of Southampton has an extensive presence in SL. One of the projects that they are developing is an exercise in visualization of an ancient Roman port. In addition to SL, they are also developing texture maps for Google Earth. The Portus Project in SL is referred to as Portus 2 and is a developing interactive representation of the entire port city. Posters, video, and other multimedia displays show the evolution of the project.

Math Playground in SL - 3 views

  •
I haven't gotten a chance to check it all out, but this page offers a link to a math playground in SL as well as another website that utilizes web 2.0 to teach math. I think it is funny that we are learning about all of these in our educational technology program, yet my district blocks all the pages from being viewed. I wonder if in the world of cyber bullying we will ever be able to convince the district that there is use for programs like this in the general education curriculum.
  •
I couldn't find the math playground in SL, but I loved the one on the website! If that site isn't blocked in my district, I am using it on Monday! This will be a great way to get my kids' attention and let them practice some skills they need work on.
