OKAPI: Excavation of an Archaeological Site in Catalhoyuk, Turkey - 0 views

  •
This is a simulation of an archeaological dig in Turkey. The site represents a Neolithic village where many generations lived, one building on top of another for over a 1000 years. The textures are appealing and realistic, and there's a lot of information on the patient and reverential process of uncovering bones (generations of families buried under each house) and artifacts of this ancient Neolithic people. "Team OKAPI and Berkeley archaeologists mirror the prehistoric village, museum and archaeology in action at Catalhoyuk, Turkey. Take a guided video walk, visit the museum, explore reconstruction of Catalhoyuk, build your own Neolithic reconstruction and remixes, and much more."

This is a cool SLURL that lets users learn about Archaeology. My school offers an archaeology elective to students. Students could use this site as a precursor to conducting their real dig by learning about surveys, stratigraphy, absolute and relative dating, and identifying the various layers of a dig site. It also allows them to use a various tools from a dig site.

This one is pretty cool. I like how you can choose a bunch of different roles to play - senator, charioter, etc. This landmark is much like a webquest - lots of adventures and options for all learners to enjoy.

The University of Southampton has an extensive presence in SL. One of the projects that they are developing is an exercise in visualization of an ancient Roman port. In addition to SL, they are also developing texture maps for Google Earth. The Portus Project in SL is referred to as Portus 2 and is a developing interactive representation of the entire port city. Posters, video, and other multimedia displays show the evolution of the project.
