Although there are numerous professional podcasting software packages currently available ($100 - $1000+), beginning podcasters may want to start with a freeware program. One of the most widely used free podcasting software programs is Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), an open source sound recording and editing program with versions available for PC, Mac, and Linux operating systems. For Mac users another free podcasting program is GarageBand, found within the iLife package that comes with all new Mac OS X computers. Although older versions of GarageBand do not have the podcasting function, upgrades to the new, podcasting-ready GarageBand 4.1 are available in the iLife08 package for $90 (educational discounts available; http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/). For specific instructions on using GarageBand, an online video tutorial is available from Apple at http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/.

However, if the objective, for example, is to create a database of reusable lecture materials, then synchronizing the slides with the audio portion of the lecture and adding special effects (e.g., sound, video) may be required and will likely take at least as long as the lecture itself.

Here at Google we go to great lengths to make people productive by allowing them to have choices with the technology they choose to do their work. I had thought that would be very, very costly. To my surprise I’ve discovered, and third-party benchmarks have verified, that when you give people the choice of their toolset, they end up supporting themselves much more.

Critics counter that, absent clear proof, schools are being motivated by a blind faith in technology and an overemphasis on digital skills — like using PowerPoint and multimedia tools — at the expense of math, reading and writing fundamentals. They say the technology advocates have it backward when they press to upgrade first and ask questions later.

Anyone know of a presentation like this aimed at secondary education? As a teacher I think about the same issue - get a point - all the time. Power Point can, unfortunatly, become a useless and boring mess of stolen text and fancy slide transitions. I could see using this in an educational setting even though the aim feels business related.

Kirstie, you can find many such presentations on Slideshare... just a matter of weeding through them. Here's a lighthearted approach to the many concepts that students might relate to: http://www.microsoft.com/office/powerpoint-slidefest/do-and-dont.aspx

What we need is a system of local “food hubs” that can process and bundle local foods and deliver them to the places where America eats.
-
Perhaps the only thing all these food hubs share is a conviction that there is value in preserving regional identity, artisanal character, and sustainable practices—in saving some products from the great meat grinder of industrial food distribution.
