Daily Kos: Universal Public Education Is Dead: The Rise of State Schools - 0 views

  • U.S. schools under the jurisdiction of state and federal governments are now scripted processes that view knowledge as static capital, students as passive and empty vessels, and teachers as compliant conduits for state-approved content. The accountability paradigm is antithetical to human agency and autonomy and thus to democracy, but it serves the needs of the status quo and the ruling elite; in effect, accountability paradigms driving compulsory education are oppressive:
  • Re-reading and re-writing the world acknowledges that being as a human is always becoming, and these acts embrace the perpetual cycle of re-reading and re-writing as essential for both human agency and democracy. Teaching and learning are reciprocal and on-going, not hierarchical and ends to attain, possess.

How about teach them how to cite? Easybib is like the kid in the group who doesn't always do the best work. It's a good resource, but our students must learn to be smarter than an algorithm.

Five reads for September - The Learner's Way - 7 views

  •
For teachers in Australia, the long Term Three is drawing rapidly to a close. Indeed as I write this just ten days remain before a two-week break. This is the perfect time to consider a holiday reading list. Just enough time to raid the school library or place an order with your favourite book store. Here is what's currently occupying space on my nightstand.

  • “How can educators around the world use technology to connect, collaborate, teach, support and inspire each other? Collaborative Internet applications allow educators to create online communities that support their professional learning and relieve their isolation. In this session we will focus on the ways two social networking tools, Twitter and Classroom 2.0, can be harnessed to build a rich and powerful learning community.

I realize there are many amazing posts on the merits of using Twitter to develop a PLN. I also realize that there already exists dozens of collections of tools for making the most of Twitter. Yet, as I prepare for my presentation at NJECC's annual conference tomorrow, I am compelled to write one of my own.

Habits of the Creative Mind - 75 views

  •
We've written a book for teachers who are tired of teaching to the test and want to get access to their students' creative potential. It's a writing book that is actually meant to be read; it's a pedagogy based on how we come to know the world and how we learn to confront the unknown. Available for free 7 day download at Amazon. We're having a book launch party at the MLA16 in Austin, Jan 9, 10AM Bedford Booth. Come talk about creativity and curiosity with us. Book launch at the upcoming #MLA16 in Austin

"In fact, it's not really possible to motivate anyone, except perhaps yourself.  If you have enough power, sure, you can make people, including students, do things.  That's what rewards (e.g., grades) and punishments (e.g., grades) are for.  But you can't make them do those things well ... The more you rely on coercion and extrinsic inducements, as a matter of fact, the less interest students are likely to have in whatever they were induced to do."

Student Expectations Seen as Causing Grade Disputes - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • students must “read for knowledge and write with the goal of exploring ideas.” This informal mission statement, along with special seminars for freshmen, is intended to help “re-teach students about what education is.”
  • if students developed a genuine interest in their field, grades would take a back seat, and holistic and intrinsically motivated learning could take place

Information-rich and attention-poor - 0 views

  • With almost all of the world's codified knowledge at your fingertips, why should you spend increasingly scarce attention loading up your own mind just in case you may some day need this particular fact or concept? Far better, one might argue, to access efficiently what you need, when you need it. This depends, of course, on building up a sufficient internalized structure of concepts to be able to link with the online store of knowledge. How to teach this is perhaps the greatest challenge and opportunity facing educators in the 21st century.
  • Those of us who are still skeptical might recall that Plato, in the Phaedrus, suggested that writing would “create forgetfulness in the minds of those who learn to use it.”

Constructivism - 0 views

  •
Constructivist theories grew out of the work of a couple of Russians around the time of the Russian Revolution. It is radical subjectivism dressed up as science, and has no scientific credibility whatsoever. It is used by radical educators to push their barrow that nothing the teacher knows is worth the student learning and that all knowledge is innate. It's bullsh*t. Theories like this rot are part of the reason that the bottom has dropped out of Western education and we have a generation who can't write. This should be resisted by any educator with an interest in educational excellence.

Why playing in the virtual world has an awful lot to teach children | Technology | The ... - 29 views

  • If we are to understand the 21st century and the generation who will inherit it, it's crucial that we learn to describe the dynamics of this gaming life: a place that's not so much about escaping the commitments and interactions that make friendships "real" as about a sophisticated set of satisfactions with their own increasingly urgent reality and challenges.
    • Paul Allison

This is pretty easy to say, and I'm helping to create a NYC Writing Project group to look experiment with games and to study how to bring them into our curriculum. So much of it is theory! And sometimes it feels like another pressure point urging us to do this or do that in the classroom.

which is why it is so crucial to examine in our classrooms-helping our students develop fair judgment when using technoligies.
  • if the user “transforms” the material in some way, repurposing it in a new media composition, for instance, then fair use likely applies.
  • or did it just repeat the work for the same intent and value as the original?
  • Students’ use of copyrighted material should not be a substitute for creative effort.
  •
from NCTE's Monthly Intellectual Property Reports, Troy Hicks writes: "In November 2008, educators were introduced to the "Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Education," and our concept of how to deal with copyright issues in the classroom has, literally, been transformed. As the official policy of NCTE related to fair use in the teaching of English, it is a document worth our attention as students learn to comprehend and compose texts utilizing a variety of forms of media."
