Our house, is a very, very, very fine house…by @MaximJKelly - 7 views

"Say what you like about Hogwarts but it's difficult to deny its 'old school' charm struck a chord with millions of avid readers both young and old. Amongst the many effects of Harry Potter in our education system was the revival, or re-emergence, in the state sector at least, of that gloriously stereotypical mainstay of public education: houses. Having been fortunate enough to spend a career working across a rich variety of settings, centres and schools - both private and state-led - I have seen many examples of the house system; and many examples of both the best - and the most pointless - systems and what they do or don't achieve."

Great video showing how much has changed and how much we continue to struggle with the same ideas. In October 1995, the House Committee Economic and Educational Opportunities and House Science Committees held a nearly three-hour hearing to examine "technological advances in education."

David Truss: Transformative or just flashy educational tools? - Teachers with Apps - 72 views

  •
There are a couple tools out now that I see bantered around in educational circles that I just hate! And there are some pretty awesome tools out there that are being used in rather old and traditional ways, and I don't hate the tool, but I hate the use of them. Exceptions don't contradict what I'm trying to explain here, but rather prove the point that: A tool is just a tool! I can use a hammer to build a house and I can use the same hammer on a human skull. It's not the tool, but how you use it that matters.

House Afire: PBL Diary - Three weeks in. Ups and Downs - 30 views

It's been a busy three weeks in my BTT class. The teams have started their projects and are running fast with them. I love watching kids struggle. No - not because I want them to suffer, but because wrestling with an idea or task both deepens their learning and develops true self-confidence - nothing like succeeding at something hard to make you believe in yourself.

CISPA: An Alternate Future Where Your Personal Privacy No Longer Exists - rgesthuizen@g... - 32 views

  •
"(fictional story) Last week the House of Representatives passed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), a follow-up bill to SOPA that wants to erode your personal privacy. The bill, itself, is palatable enough that Facebook and Microsoft gave it their seal of approval, and it's already got a kick start towards passing into law. So what would life be like if CISPA were part of our reality?"

Can We Prevent An Education Bubble? - Forbes - 45 views

Delivering quality education is more than about lowering costs. Any teacher that can be entirely replaced by a video or a computer, probably should be.

"Many media have finally recognized the education bubble and the potential that it may hurt our economy more than the housing bubble. However, two experts in the field of education know this and are trying to change the way we see education - Dr. Raymund Paredes and Salman Khan."
