Shimon Sandler offers some tips for linking phone orders to search campaigns, ranging from simple (using a pay-per-call provider) to more involved (setting up a database of unique promo codes tied to specific keywords).

You can create a unique landing page for each product that features a different phone number for each of the engines, or add a promo/reference code to each product page and train your phone sales reps to ask for and record this code for every order.

Sandler says that you can also put a printable coupon on each landing page that consumers need to redeem in-store, or try an IVR phone system that tracks phone calls and their sources. - Read the whole story...

We tracked the eyes of 22 people as they watched three kinds of video: Talking head video, webinar-style slide video and hand-drawn whiteboard-style video.

What we found out was that a human face is magnetic. Even when props were added, the viewers' gazes returned quickly to the face.

This article on how onscreen talent can hurt your product demo videos echoes our findings.

Yes, humans love human faces. We gaze at them and examine them. Unfortunately, this is a problem when we want someone to look at something else.

Science of Conversion Rate Optimization * Yoast - 1 views

@yaost offers some good advice in this article. In particular, there are some testing "elephants in the room" that he points out. These include the fact that the Z score used by testing tools assumes a normal distribution -- a bell curve -- in the data. That is often not the case.

He also recommends ending tests on week boundaries. If you start a test on Friday and end it on a Tuesday, you may be exaggerating your results as Tuesdays are often bigger conversion days for ecommerce sites.

This article is just nerdy enough for most marketers, and you're going to have to add some nerdy to your repertoire if you're not already there.

I especially love the banner images for each topic. Very fun. Colleges Rehab Their Web Sites for Major Payoffs - Technology - The Chronicle of Higher... - 0 views

  •
We've had the privilege of working with several colleges to optimize their websites. The lessons laid out in this article cannot be overstated. According to SpyFu.com, of 5,050 websites in the "University" and "College" industries who spend more than $5000 per month on search ads, only 275 have split testing software installed. However, 4,208 have some form of web analytics software installed.

The bottom line is that those universities who are involved in testing their sites are going to win more top students to graduate and undergraduate programs.

"Many private universities spend upward of $2,000 to recruit each student who enrolls." A little optimization will go a long way.
