      ELL and special ed students can be paired with another student to help create a journal of observations with pictures and words dealing with the states of matter. This activity can be used for older grades too. The students could find the densities of the solids and liquids. They could even go so far as to cook a breakfast and discuss liquids to solids as they are cooked.

    The activity allows students to compare and contrast different solids and liquids. There is also a cooking portion of the activity that can be done with maple syrup.

Differentiation: For gifted students, have them melt a solid in different ways (microwave, oven, stovetop, heat from sun).  Ask them to predict which will melt the fastest and then record their observations

    Using a chocolate bar or chocolate chips students will experiment with melting the chocolate in a microwave or over a stove.  Students will make predictions and will make observations about the solid turning into a liquid.  After they have made these observations they will put the chocolate back into the freezer and make predictions and observations about what happens next.

      2.2.1 "Observe, describe and measure ways in which the properties of a sample of water (including volume) change or stay the same as the water is heated and cooled and then transformed into different states." This activity can be modified for ELL students by having them record drawings during each observation, rather than writing the words for their observations. This would be a great activity for drawing, because each state looks so much different than the others (solid, liquid, and gas). This activity can be adjusted for older grades by having the students do the same activity with predictions at the beginning of the experiment about what they believe will happen. These students could also make other predictions about other types of matter that would react in the same way the juice ice did. For further exploration, these students could then test their hypothesis regarding other objects and their state of matter.

    Students place "juice ice" into baggies and observe the state of the ice at various points in the day. The students then compare the beginning state of the ice with the ending state of the ice. This is a great lesson on solids, liquids, and gasses!

    Adaptions: You can adapt this lesson for ELL or special needs students by pairing them in groups and assiging each person in the group a task...the ELL and Special Needs students could draw the pictures or record information while they learning about matter by other group members without pressure/anxiety. Extensions: You can extend this activity to younger greades by using something other than candles. For example, you can use an ice cube, watch it melt, and over time chart the level of water and have the students explain what happenes to the water and the state of matter it has turned into. 6.1.2 Explain the properties of solids, liquids and gases using drawings and models that represent matter as particles in motion whose state can be represented by the relative positions and movement of the particles. 6.1.3 Using a model in which matter is composed of particles in motion, investigate that when substances undergo a change in state, mass is conserved.

      You could extend this activity to higher grades by using higher fractions, adding or subrtacting fractions, or for younder geades by using number cards instead of a deck of cards to help them identify numbers.

      This game could be used in younger grades (K and 1st) by having the students use a regular deck of cards and finding four numbers of the same kind instead of equivalent numbers. Higher advanced students could use a deck of cards with harder fractions and percentages. They could also create their own decks of cards to play with. Lower ability students could use decks of cards were they have to find two fractions and/or two percentages instead of four different equivalent numbers.

    In this version of the classic card game, students gain a solid understanding of basic equivalents, while having so much fun they may not realize it's a math review.

Record the sounds and then discuss and share the results. 3.1.3 Investigate and recognize that sound moves through solids, liquids and gases (e.g., air). Differentiation: Assign a student with poor fine motor skills a partner to do their hole poking for them.  With their partner, have students build their telephones with help from a peer.  Although this project may seem simple to build, students with under-developed motor skills would have great difficulty with this task.  Having a students get help from a peer would allow them to complete the task and practice working collaboratively with others.

    Using paper, string, and salt, students will create a cone out of the paper that will act as their pendulum.  They will swing the pendulum so it just touches the pile of salt and watch the designs it makes.  Students can change the pendulum's direction to see if that changes the design.

      This game can be differentiated by grouping students (7 cards, six cards, five cards) and they can earn a certificate when they demonstrate they are ready to move up to a new group.  This is a great way to reinforce skills and also assess students' progress.

      For differentiated learning, have sections of students competing.  Some could compete at the seven card level, others at six, and others at five.  As they "pass" each level, they earn a certificate entitling them to compete at the next level.  Great way to improve skills and assess progress!

On long strips of paper I made place value charts, making sure the commas were in place and writing the words (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.) under the blank line where a number will be placed. Laminate. With a partner and a deck of cards the children shuffle the deck and then pass out the predetermined number of cards according to how far you want them to learn place value. Hundred thousands would be 6 cards, millions 7 cards, 10 millions 8 cards, etc. Cards are face down in a pile. Face cards equal 1, aces are 0, and everything else what they say. They are trying to make the largest number possible to win (or smallest). Both players turn over a card at the same time and decide where to place it. Once placed it must stay there....

    This is a GREAT game idea to reinforce place value.  FANTASTIC!  Kids love games. Easy and inexpensive to make.  You need paper (laminate finished product) and decks of cards.  Can be independent learning, homework, or station time with students.
