What Does It Matter? | Education.com - 2 views

Adaptions: I would make this a cooperative learning assignment putting students into goups and assigning each person a task giving ELL and special need students the task of the recorder or illustrator. Extensions: you can extend this activity to younger grades (5TH AND 4TH) by going over the different states of matter. I found a Bill Nye science video on this topic that would be good for younger students to peak interest and enhance understanding.

Great 6th grade activity to experiment with matter

I love this activity for 5th graders. Great way to teach about the phases of the moon!
  •
Adaption: SEE "MOON PHASES ACTIVITY-PHRASES FOR PHASES: A MOON TUNE. Extensions: You can extend this activity for 6th grade my having them creat a model of the moon and it's phases and demonstrating their understanding through a presentations. ( I would group them and have each person write about their part of the demonstration and that it what they present) You can extend it you younger grades by having them draw the phases of the moon and with parents (as homework) go outside at night and dermine which phase the moon is in and drawing a picture of that phase on the claendar. 5.2.4 Use a calendar to record observations of the shape of the moon and the rising and setting times over the course of a month. Based on the observations, describe patterns in the moon cycle. 5.2.1 Recognize that our earth is part of the solar system in which the sun, an average star, is the central and largest body. Observe that our solar system includes the sun, moon, seven other planets and their moons, and many other smaller objects like asteroids and comets.

How Many Peas Fill the Classroom? < Teaching Channel - 1 views

    • Lori Jones

Common core math 5.MD.4  I like that this allows students to ponder different questions, think through different ideas on how to calculate it, and in the process, learn about volume.  Students who need an extra challenge could determine how many peas would fill their homes, or how many to fill the school.  Students needing extra assistance can be paired with students who are stronger in math, and/or work with the teacher in small groups.

CCS: 5.NBT.3 Really fun game where kids have to think about and follow the rules of the game, review how to add decimals, and then think logically about how to win the game. Really fun and competitive way to work on decimals.

Extensions:  Science & Music are connected in this activity. Adaptations: Gifted students can make a rubber band instrument that plays a scale or tune.  ESL & Special Ed students can draw a picture of the instrument they would like to create or help make the instrument.  (Small groups will work on this project together)

Sensational Sounds Projects: Sound Sandwich - 6th Grade All sound starts with vibration, and that vibration can come from just about anything. In this activity, your breath will cause two rubber bands to vibrate. Then, you will see if you can change the pitch, or how high or low we hear a sound.  Supplies:  Download the PDF

There are multiple activities on this site that would be beneficial. I don't see a 6.3.22 standard in the 2010 standards. Is this a typo? There are several third grade standards that deal with sound.

Play Graphing Battleship | Education.com - 2 views

Larger coordinate planes could be used for longer games.  Make sure to have the players compare their two graphs at the end, if they are different someone made a mistake.
  •
An easy way to practice coordinate pairs.
  •
Love this because it takes a subject like graphing algebraic equations and turns it into a fun battleship game. Great for in class partner work. Suggested only for 6th grade, possibly higher level 5th grade math.
  •
CCS: 5.G.1 Great way to learn the x an y axis coordinate planes. Can also have them make shapes in the coordinate planes instead of straightline battleships.

this lesson would be great for special needs students to give them visual aids used to help them relate and understand math in the real world

This activity could be extended to other grades in a variety of ways. For example, you could use it to teach place value for first grade using money, or teaching how to count change for kingergarten. Also, you could set up a class store and demonstrate positive and negative intergers pretending to "shop" for items in the classroom, this cold be a great 3rd grade activity. You could make a "grocery list" and give them a spending amount and demonstrate - or + integers!

This would be a fun activity for 6th grade Earth Science
    • Jessica Buell

Adaptions: for ELL and special need students explain what the items represent by also showing them a picture of the real item when explaining the materials and what they represent. Extensions: you can extend this activity to younger grades by having kindergartners and 1st graders use cookie cutters instead of straws, they may not have the fine motor skills developed yet to use the straw.

you could differeniate this lesson by selecting easier patterns or difficult patterns depending on child's level.

I love this activity! YOu can extend this acvity by choosing different puzzles for the level the students are at. They range from easy-difficult. This would be a great activity to all grades kg-6th!
  •
I might be obsessed with this game! Kids would love it and it would be a great way to keep them entertained and involved during centers!

you can adapt this lesson for different levels by chaniging the amount of salary depending on level....Ex: 1 cent starting with lower levels and $100 for students at higher levels.
    • Jessica Buell

you could extend this activity for KG or 1st grade by simplifying the worksheets and the senerios to an easier level. This would be a great way to introduce money and show real world representations.

you can adapt this activity in many ways. You could just have children build shapes with the pices or you could give them tangram mats to build specific shapes.
    • Jessica Buell

you can extend this lesson for 5th and 6th grade to help work on reasoning and logical thinking by setting up a 3 circle venn diagram and giving the students cards and the oponent has to guess the puzzle of which shapes belong in which circle based on their attributes.

How to Calculate Pi by Throwing Frozen Hot Dogs - 1 views

    • William Templeton

The math in this activity is not too challenging but it requires the students to be precise in their data collection to see good results.  It meets the goals of the CCSS for 6th grade math that students "Attend to precision" and "look for and make use of structure".  Gifted students might be interested in the information about the Buffon Needle Problem, link found in the "Tips" section.  To extend the lesson students could consider what changes could be made to the lesson to improve the accuracy of its approximation of pi.

This is a fun activity that gets students up and moving around and can show them how math is a part of the world in surprising ways.

Adaptions: You can adapt this lesson for ELL or special needs students by pairing them in groups and assiging each person in the group a task...the ELL and Special Needs students could draw the pictures or record information while they learning about matter by other group members without pressure/anxiety. Extensions: You can extend this activity to younger greades by using something other than candles. For example, you can use an ice cube, watch it melt, and over time chart the level of water and have the students explain what happenes to the water and the state of matter it has turned into. 6.1.2 Explain the properties of solids, liquids and gases using drawings and models that represent matter as particles in motion whose state can be represented by the relative positions and movement of the particles. 6.1.3 Using a model in which matter is composed of particles in motion, investigate that when substances undergo a change in state, mass is conserved.
