A lot of ways you could adapt this for ELL learners or Special needs 1st grade

Adaptions: You can adapt this activity for ELL and special needs by doing an into to the bufferfly lifecycle, you can include books, do drawings charting the life cycle. While you are doing this you can have the students make a vocabulary journal identifying vocabulary used in the butterfly life cycle. Extensions: I think ALL grades would love this activity, you would want to add things to the activity depending on the grade level. For example, for 2nd graders you can have them journal and write stories about their butterflies, 3rd grade you can have them define different types of butterfies and then see which type they have from their habitats, 4th graders can identify different locations you may find different types of butterflies, and for kindergarten you can identify differences between butterflies and moths....etc!

this a great lesson to help students visualize place value. You could pair ELL/special need students with advanced students.

So many ways you can extend this activity to other grades. You could extend it for Kindergarten and 1st grade by using manipulatives instead of a deck of cards to introduce place value. You would want to give the 1st and second graders a ganizer mat when using manipulatives. For higher grades you could have the students pair up and then have to make two sets of numbers and add them together to make the highes number, or subtract them to make the lowest number. You could also do this activity using decimals to intoroduce the place value of decimals.

You can adapt this lesson by using smaller numbers until the concept is grasped, then you can move to larger numbers

You could extend this activity to higher grades by using higher fractions, adding or subrtacting fractions, or for younder geades by using number cards instead of a deck of cards to help them identify numbers.

This game could be used in younger grades (K and 1st) by having the students use a regular deck of cards and finding four numbers of the same kind instead of equivalent numbers. Higher advanced students could use a deck of cards with harder fractions and percentages. They could also create their own decks of cards to play with. Lower ability students could use decks of cards were they have to find two fractions and/or two percentages instead of four different equivalent numbers.

you could do this with subtraction for advanced students or you could adapt it by giving them a sheet with problems already solved and they have to try to match their turns with all of the problems. (this would be good for memorizing)

You could adapt this for students wth special needs or ELL students by paiting them with at level students and giving them counters and ganizer mats to help them visualize addition.

You can extend this lesson to 3rd or 4th grade by chaning the rules. FOr 3rd grade they can multiple instead of add and for 4th grade you can have them adding or subtracing fractions or decimals.

This would be a fun activity for 6th grade Earth Science

Adaptions: for ELL and special need students explain what the items represent by also showing them a picture of the real item when explaining the materials and what they represent. Extensions: you can extend this activity to younger grades by having kindergartners and 1st graders use cookie cutters instead of straws, they may not have the fine motor skills developed yet to use the straw.

Great science actiivity for 1st grade

Adaptions: you can adapt this lesson for ELL or special needs students by introducing a liquid and a solid in a more clear from (ex: using water and ice) until the concept is understood. Then, move on using the gluep. Extensions: You could also do this experiment with 4th graders before you introduce matter to gain an understanding of the three states of matter.

you can extend this activity to KG or 1st grade by using single digit numbers 1-9 and then once they have mastered these you can use numbers 11-20. To extend this activity for older grades add additional steps by having them solve a multiplication or division problems and them comparing the answers or use fractions and compare greater than, larger than, or equivalent fractions.

Extensions: Be sure to go over vocabulary and different terms involving fossils, using illustrations to show the definition as well as the words. Extensions: There are a lot of ways you can extend this activity. For Kindergarten or 1st grade you can extend this activity by creating a center of a dinosaur dig and have the students make their own fossil as well as draw a picture of the fossil they "dug up" and writing a simple sentence about what they think their fossil is.

Adaptions: You can adapt this lesson for ELL and special need students by having the students describe their fossil and you can create a timeline of the board and have the ELL and special needs students draw a picture of their fossil and place it on the timeline of when they think it lived.

After exploring as a group, have students build a structure at home that they believe is the most structurally sound as well as tallest possible. The guidelines for this project are as follows: The stucture can only be made out of spaghetti and marshmallows.The budget for thier structure is $200 (not real money). Each marshmallow (hypothetically) costs $10 and each strand of uncooked spaghetti costs $5. The structure must hold a stuffed gorilla that weighs 5 oz. The tallest structure wins. My sister's kids do this project. It is required for 4th and 5th graders, but it is open to the whole school. Her kids have been doing it since 1st grade and love it. Every year they try a new design and take pictures of models past.

you can adapt this lesson for different levels by chaniging the amount of salary depending on level....Ex: 1 cent starting with lower levels and $100 for students at higher levels.

you could extend this activity for KG or 1st grade by simplifying the worksheets and the senerios to an easier level. This would be a great way to introduce money and show real world representations.

you can adapt this lesson by using only the number cards 1-9 instead of a deck of cards and have them line up that many manuplitaves, for advanced children you could make the queen & kind "wild" cards.

you can extend this lesson for 1st or 2nd grade by paring them up into two. They lay the 5 out and one person is the "dealer" and the other person is the "guesser". The guesser gets to ask if the card is higher or lower than 5. After the dealer resonds the guesses must try to guess which number they think the dealer has. If they guess it correclty the dealer keeps the deck, and if they guess it incorrectly the dealer passes the deck on and they switch roles. This is a great activity to reviewing , or =.
