You can add a target to the anchor tag. Ex.:

    LINK

The values you can use are:
    _blank
    _self
    _parent
    _top

I added a sticky note here as an example. This isn't an ideal solution, because not everyone would know how to do this, or think of it. (I had to search my memory banks, and then Google, to recall the html!) Could the old way be restored?

Examples of how libraries can use Diigo - 1 views

Here are some examples of electronic resources I've bookmarked for my library.  If you expand all, you can follow the "more information" links to the bibliographic records in our catalog.  (If you don't understand my library jargon, that's okay; just follow the links and it should be clear what I'm talking about.)
And this is just the tip of the iceberg; annotations could include sound and video clips, links to other suggested resources ("see also..."), hyperlinked search strings for the library catalog, WorldCat.org, Diigo, Google, or other sources, plus about a zillion things that I can't even think of.

I posted a tagroll on my website. It shows up beautifully in Firefox, but doesn't show up at all in Internet Explorer. I think it has something to do with cookies and privacy settings; a privacy report said that a cookie associated with the Diigo tagroll was blocked. I tried resetting my IE privacy setting to the lowest level, allowing popups from Diigo, allowing cookies from Diigo, restarting IE - nothing seems to work.

The page is at http://141.216.10.140/library/test.htm, if you want to look at it.

Toolbar causing problems with some pdf files - 79 views

When I open pdf files embedded in a web page, they stay open until they are done loading and then disappear. I identified the current toolbar 1.0.2007101800 as the culprit by systematically disabling my Firefox add-ons. It doesn't do this with pdf files that open to a new page.

Just yesterday, I discovered, via Google, a piece of software for sale to assist our spamming brethren in polluting social bookmarking the way they've already polluted email. This software (RSS Bookmarker) is designed to "drip" bookmarks into accounts gradually, so they aren't detected as spam. Gaah! Can't these jerks leave anything alone? I hope Diigo and other bookmarking sites figure out and share new and better ways to defeat this new annoyance.

I was installing gadgets onto my iGoogle page, but there doesn't seem to be one for Diigo. This would be a nice tool to have for Diigo users and for promoting the product. Not that the Diigo engineers are busy or anything. 8-)

I thought you might be interested in what I'm hoping to do with a Diigo group at the Thompson Library at the University of Michigan-Flint. I'm planning to create links to tags in my group (UM-Flint Thompson Library), and encourage students to set up accounts, bookmark sites, save them to the group, annotate bookmarks, etc. This way, students can help build my library's collection of websites, but I'll be able to exercise editorial control. My group tags haven't been working well (my individual tags work fine), so I'm hoping there's a fix in the works or that v.3 will take care of the problem.

Librarians and educators seem to be increasingly interested in social bookmarking, and although del.icio.us is more well known, I think Diigo has the potential to blow them out of the water, especially in educational settings.

Yes - there's a topic about this at http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/1563. Basically, any tags I added to my group's bookmarks after about 10/18/2007 don't work, whether they are new bookmarks or old bookmarks that I tried adding tags to. For example, on my last group bookmark (added today), I used these tags: columnists, economics, and political_science. If I click economics, I get a "no bookmarks" message. If I click columnists or political_science, I get bookmarks, but only ones I bookmarked on or before 10/18. Not even the bookmark with the clicked tag shows up. My group is at http://groups.diigo.com/groups/thompsonlibrary if you want to see for yourself, but it also seems to be a problem in this group, as well as some others. The tags in my user bookmarks work fine.

UPDATE: The tags work now. Is the problem fixed permanently? I'd like to proceed with urging students to join my group.

When you click the "About" link for a bookmark, you can see who else has viewed the site. If someone visits anonymously, their city is shown. This raises privacy issues, especially in my situation: I'm a librarian who wants to use Diigo on my library's website. To librarians, publicly revealing who has used a resource is a huge no-no. (A student might, for example, not want others to know that she has viewed the website "Bedwetting: How to Beat It Through Self-Hypnosis.")

In another topic (http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/1474), Maggie indicated that v.3 would contain greater privacy protection. Could you expand on this at all? Could the "about" and "shared by" links be turned off, especially by a group owner?

    Thanks!

Tags Not Working - 64 views

My personal tags are working, but in a group I created most still don't work. I bookmarked some sites last night, and their tags show "no bookmarks" when clicked. An older bookmark's tag works fine. I ran into this problem a few days ago (http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/1563), and apparently it was caused by some maintenance work.

I hope this clears up soon; I was planning to do a brief demo of Diigo to my colleagues at my library this afternoon.

    Works fine now - thanks!

I'd like to start using my group to bookmark sites for my library's website, but I'm hesitant to do so if this is a recurring problem. Is it permanently fixed, or is it the dying gasps of v.2, or is it something else?

As soon as I know it's reliable, I'll start encouraging students at my library to join Diigo and add sites to my group.

Tags in my group don't work - 44 views

groups tags

Most of the tags in the group I started (http://groups.diigo.com/cloud/thompsonlibrary) don't work. If I click them, it says "No bookmarks." I don't see any pattern or logic to which ones work and which don't. (The tags that do work are "diigo," "evolution," and "possibilities.") I saved them from my own account, and the tags work fine there.

[UPDATE 10/10/2007]: They seem to be working now. I had a colleague test it, and of course she couldn't reproduce the problem. Then I couldn't reproduce it. Yesterday I had the problem both at home and at work (three computers total). Did something get corrected or self-corrected?

Thanks, Maggie. Yes, I'm planning to use it as an experiment on my library's website. I will bookmark some sites and create links to Diigo tags, and encourage students to set up accounts, bookmark sites, and save them to the group I created. This way, students can help build the library's collection of websites. I'm looking forward to seeing v.3 and what I can do with that.

More group tag problems - my newer tags aren't working again. This seems to be a problem on some other groups' tags, as well. The tags on my bookmarks from about 10/18/2007 and back work fine. Newer bookmarks and new tags on older bookmarks don't show up when I click the tags. This is happening in this group and a couple other groups I checked, but not in all of them.

If this is just the dying gasps of v.2, I can wait until v.3 comes out (hint-hint!).

UPDATE: The tags work now. Is it safe to proceed with adding bookmarks to my group?

I created an enhanced linkroll in Firefox, but when I checked the "only annotated" box, nothing showed up. I have commented on, posted sticky notes to, and highlighted several of my bookmarks. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, if anything.

A more important question: is there any way the linkroll can include the comments and/or tags in the display? I see the comments when I'm in Diigo's interface (via the "Expand/Collapse" link), but I'd like to have it in my own website's interface. Del.icio.us allows this, but I don't see a way to do this in Diigo.

    [snip]

    > 4. How about allowing larger amounts (currently up to 20) on enhanced linkroll

When I posted the script to my web page, I simply changed "&count=10" to "&count=60" and it worked. For some of the uses I'm looking into, a max of 20 is not enough.

    > 5. How about really going cool and start working with librarians that have bigger library needs.

    Yes! See my comment below.

    [snip]

    > I'm a librarian that would like to post 400-1000 url's a day by myself, and want to build an organized library network with dozens of other librarians... Make the jump folks! Your already leading this stuff with your innovations.

Too right! I'm an academic librarian who wants to use social bookmarking on our website. I just discovered Diigo a couple days ago, and am very excited about the possibilities. I've been experimenting with Del.icio.us, but I like the ability in Diigo to include hyperlinks in the comments of my bookmarks. This is useful for directing library users to library-created information about a bookmark (e.g. a record in the library catalog).

Another question, regarding the terms of use. Section 8.10 prohibits content that "contains restricted or password only access pages or hidden pages or images (those not linked to or from another accessible page)". I'm guessing that this is to prevent porn sites and the like from using Diigo. A lot of the bookmarks I'd like to have are to licensed resources that require off-campus users to login using EZProxy. Only students, faculty, and staff have off-campus access. If we can't include password-protected bookmarks, I can't use Diigo on my library's website. Is there some sort of academic-use clause that I'm missing, or that Diigo would consider adding? Or am I misinterpreting something?

    [snip]

I see some great possibilities for using Diigo in libraries. I thank you in advance for your help, and keep up the good work!
