In a little over 20 years, the use of the Internet has become ubiquitous. Access to the Internet at increasingly higher connection speeds, is assuming a key role in guaranteeing both economic prosperity as well as social cohesion. The European Commission ("EC") has therefore set out an ambitious programme for increasing the accessibility of Internet provision in Europe under its Next Generation Access ("NGA"), a programme with ambitious roll-out targets that include improving download speeds so that all EU citizens will have Internet access at 30 Megabits per second ("Mbps") by the year 2020 and that 50% of households will have the ability to access the Internet at speeds of 100 Mbps or more. NGA will be key to the development of a European economy that is smart, sustainable and inclusive

"We live in an age of sharing. As consumers and online, we regularly share personal information, and generate new data through our browsing or purchasing history. Businesses and government are increasingly aware of the value of this information, which can result in better and cheaper services for customers, new sources of income for businesses and improved public services. But the question of who owns this information, and how it is collected, stored and used, is becoming a major consumer rights issue. It is crucial, therefore, that people are at the heart of any new settlement. The Data Dialogue sets out the results of the largest ever poll of public attitudes on personal information and data- sharing. Based on a representative sample of 5,000 adults, the report finds a growing crisis in consumer confidence over how government and business handle personal data, and discomfort about the way in which personal information and data are currently being used. The report argues that this loss of confidence could have a knock-on effect on the economy and on the quality of services available to consumers. However, it also finds that views about sharing change when people are given more control and choice about what data is shared, and when the benefit of sharing that data is made clear to them. It therefore suggests that consumers should be engaged in an honest dialogue about how data are collected and used, and be given meaningful choice and control over the information they share. That will be good for business and consumers alike."

Ford Motor Company has publicly predicted self-driving automobiles may be a possibility as early as 2017 and the Wall Street Journal has proclaimed such vehicles are "inevitable."

"BT is investing £2.5bn to roll-out superfast broadband to two-thirds of UK consumer and business premises by the end of 2014. This paper provides estimates of the economic value created by broadband Internet using measures of new gross domestic product and consumer surplus.  The study finds that the economic value created in  30OECD countries correlates roughly with the overall size of their broadband economies. In addition, price and quality data from the  United States suggest that widespread adoption of broadband Internet has occurred without a dramatic decline in prices, which reflects an unobserved increase in broadband quality that conventional government statistics do not capture.

The American college system is staggeringly large: 2,421 four-year institutions enroll about 18.5 million college students. The proportion of Americans with a bachelor's degree is at an all-time high - a social victory if they're able to enjoy a positive return on their degrees, which the Pew Research Center estimates at about $550,000 on average.

"The 90% having access to broadband was announced by Ofcom recently, but it should be made totally clear that the Ofcom 90% figure refers to broadband connecting at 2 Mbps or faster. The number having any form of broadband what so ever will be higher, and while this may be so slow that even low quality video streaming is not possible, basic email/banking should be possible on any broadband service that is running above dial-up speeds"

L'édition 2012 de la conférence  « Le Web », qui a lieu à Paris du 4 au 6 décembre, a pour thème l'Internet des Objets (IoT, Internet of Things). En français, IdO... Pour expliquer l'importance du sujet, les responsables de l'événement  avancent un chiffre : en 2020, 50 milliards de machines seront connectées à Internet.  Puis ils citent Michael Nelson, professeur au département Technologie, Culture et Communication de l'université Georgetown (à Washington) : « essayer de déterminer la taille du marché de l'Internet des Objets, c'est comme si, en 1940, on avait essayé de calculer le marché futur des matières plastiques. A l'époque, il était difficile d'imaginer qu'un jour, le plastique  serait partout."

Fatigués du manque de vision face à l'économie numérique, une douzaine de penseurs du secteur se sont associés pour concevoir les fondements d'un Plan numérique pour le Québec, qu'ils rendront public au cours des prochains jours à Montréal, a appris Les Affaires.
