      This is one of my favorite layouts on this site because it is so intricate! The typography and the graphics match seamlessly! And the mirror-imaged pictures of the shoes are so interesting to the eye. The whole layout makes me excited about what I am going to read. The layout is intricate, yet still simple enough.

    Everything is very organized, with the menu tabs at the top and a fair amount of white space. Their is a lot of words however, and that may make the reader to skip over some very useful information.

    On this website it was a more condesned version of what was covered in the text reading. It really did not go into depth like the book did on each topic but it did touch on the topics giving a brief descrpition along with pictures. This website would most likely be used for someone who is new to the whole design and layout field.

    This website was what the reading in Basic of desgin would call KISS because it covered everything that we read but it covered it in a simpler version. It gave little pictures along with each topic that associated with the topic.

      Although this page is specifically for a website, it applies the same elements that can be used in blogs, and other design prospects.
  • All whitespace should be accounted for. This does not mean that you should fill all whitespace - it means that when you have areas of whitespace it should add to the overall compositional balance of your page.
  • When working with layout, it is essential to focus on balance and the shape of the unused space. By applying principles of figure/ ground relationships, contrast and similarity, and proportion, the designer can structure the space into an effective whole.

  • The designer can change the background color easily, so when we refer to white space, we are referring to the background color or the "ground" in a figure/ground relationship. The whitespace in a composition is as important as the elements that have been placed upon it.
  • Every element on the page effects how other elements on the page are perceived.
  • When arranging elements on the page, you should consider the visual weight of each element. Weight can be determined by the size of the object, the value (dark objects weigh more than light objects), and the density of the detail or texture.
  • Proportions and size relationships should also be considered when trying to establish balance. All objects on your page will be evaluated in relationship to other objects on the page, therefore a large object will appear much larger when placed next to small objects, thus affecting the balance.
  • The simplest type is a formally or symmetrically balanced page.
  • An asymmetrical compositional layout depends on the skillful arrangement of elements with different visual weights. For instance, a large body of text can be balanced by a dark image.

      I liked this website best because it illustrates the grid method explained in chapter 5. Also it notes that most designers forget about alignment as a design concept which I related to given my first draft of project 1 had no alignment concepts what so ever.

    This page is more of a resource than an example of aligntment. The examples that Kayla(the author) shows looks like good examples however the resolution they were posted in makes it blurry and hard to judge. Kayla however breaks down in a few brief paragraphs how effective and important alignment is within an article, or project. One aspect that she hits on that makes a lot of sense to me is the images in alignment and how they can also be placed into alignment even though it is a photo. There is a lot more that goes into alignment that first expected.

    This page goes into great detail about the importance of alignment, especially in web design. It also has many examples of alignment in different pages for you to see the effects.

    This site gives some interesting views on alignment and some examples that I'm not sure I like. In saying that though I really do like some of the notes for instance, that there are many points to align to on a layout. It also is much nicer to use color contrast and other features along with the alignment.

    This website is very helpful when it comes to explaining alignment.  Even if you have other good elements going around your picture/website, it might look cluttered and there can be a bad use of alignment.  This website gives you examples of how to use proper alignment in pictures and on a layout by using the lines, shapes, and contrasting colors.

    D#1, HW#13-3websites. Shopping Bag designs are included in the list of layout design formats as per Chapter 1. I came across this website and thought so many of the designs were so playful and attention grabbing. Great for marketing!
