D #6 HW #6 How To Improve Your Blog - 0 views

  •
This site offers 110 suggestions made by actual bloggers on how to improve a blog! While a number of them cannot be applied to my course blog (I'm not collaborating with anyone else, for example), there was still plenty of relevant advice. Even though I am given the topics to cover, I can still let my own personality come through. This relates to the course outcome of performance; a blog needs to feel like it was written by a human being and not by a robot.  I could also start adding videos that contribute to my audience's understanding. I know that the sample rhetoric on the town assignment included a video of the advertisement the student had analyzed. Another good suggestion is to break up the paragraphs, which I try to do, or use bullet points. Another blogger suggests using subheads.

This I thought was a no brainer. I don't know about my other classmates, but this is my first blog and when I first found out we were going to create a blog I didn't have a clue what I was going to do. I feel much more confident with my blogging skills but may learn something from a 101 website such as this one.

Although this is foremost a retailer of products, Amazon sticks out to me as a successful model of the WWIC concept. Being able to read both customer and professional product reviews allows me to investigate a product's merits and deficincies with ease. I have joked with my wife that Amazon may know me better than anyone. The items Amazon recommends for me are often so closely aligned with my interests that I am impressed with their algorithms to determine my preferences. Occasionally this list of suggestion will contain an item of no interest to me, and I am able to simply click and delete it. Somehow Amazon manages to consult with me in a way I find highly effective.

    * Good content is key. * Break up content- Make visitors feel at home (like in a house). * Semantics- Choose your words wisely. * Design- emphasis, contrast, balance, alignment. * Make it interactive- it engages people. *** good site on basics***
  •
I like this website because it provided good information about design. It stated that simply changing the design, blog traffic and visiting time increases. Changing the design also will help readers stay on your page and not leave if the design make the blog look ugly. This is helpful because when my peers go to my blog I want them to want to read my posts and give me feedback.

I like this website because it is a fun way to show how alignment is used poorly and how it can be used well. We have all read a comic and understand that the first one on this page is hard to read because of its alignment. So this site shows exactly how important alignment is, and how you can learn to use it correctly.
  •
Oh my this site is so awesome! I think it is really directed towards me; I have been feeling like my comic tutorial is very unorganized and not aligned. This site supplements just a short "comic-like" tutorial on alignment. I just really felt like it was a a little helpful and hopefully I have gotten good insight from it. It gave me a good idea how to organized and align my Glogster page little better

Comic Tutorial Draft - 0 views

Hey guys! I'm a little behind on my work and just now got my comic tutorial draft up. I wanted to see if anyone could do a peer review on it for me, seeing as we need to talk about it in our reflection. I would greatly appreciate it and would be glad to return the favor!

The last way this suggested on improving my blog made me laugh. I am not getting paid for this so I guess I am doing it for the right reasons. I didn't even know people blogged for money, I just thought of it more as a Public Service announcement kind of system. Where people could vent their ideas and opinions in a structured environment where they could receive feedback on such ideas. This page helped a bit due to the simplicity of it, being crunched for time within the last week I took the very brief descriptions and began to try to incorporate these facts into my blog to see if any imporvement would come about.

Well I retract my statement from just moments ago. THIS website really integrates everything that we have been taught thus far and brings it around full circle.

The "Purdue Online Writing Lab has many usefull tools to help you create good structure in your documents. It provides the rules for the APA and MLA writing styles, which are standard and often required for school and workplaces.
  • APA Formatting and Style Guide MLA 2009 Formatting and Style Guide
  •
This is my favorite online writing resource by far. Purdue created an interactive module that you can go through to learn several different formats of writing. This covers APA, MLA, and CMS styles of writing and also has numerous tutorials on general writing, teaching, research, job search writing and more. The module that most concerns our project is the Visual Rhetoric module. It gives ideas on how to apply colors, visuals, fonts, and designs to incorporate into displays.

I agree - this site lives on all of my browser toolbars. I confess that I sometimes just browse, looking for nothing in particular. I should probably seek therapy. A *great* resource.
  •
I love this website because it has something for just about anyone. I use this resource for work, helping my kids with their homework and my own homework. It has so many resources and with the different writing styles it covers helps with the different professors that I have worked with. This site will help me with Project 1 to use proper grammar and writing mechanics.

The Actual Project 3 Usability Test - 5 views

  •
Here is the link to my blog site and usability test. There are instructions as a single pdf file to be reviewed, a search to be conducted and a 13 question survey/poll afterwards. You may open the pdf file in one window and then go through the instructions in a different window to keep the pdf file accessible. I have left a section for comments/suggestions on the poll but you may add them to my blog as site as well. Thank you in advance for participating.

Alright I know we're only suppose to share two sites to the group but I found a third one that applies to our blogs unlike my last post. This article describes so many ways between choosing your theme, going with your gut, knowing your audience, and so much more. Overall my favorite article I found.

The best eye-catching quality to a blog is of course the design layout. So naturally one of the websites I picked as my favorite way to improve my blog is a free template layout. Enjoy!

D#6 HW#1.1: Harmony In Design Part 2: Repetition » SitePoint - 0 views

Repetition is a great technique that goes along well with balance. It helps create more visual effects to catch the eye. Here we learn that images and text need uniformity and repetition.
  • repetition
  • Design elements can be photographs, illustrations, type, headlines, backgrounds and textures (and anything else you might like to add to your design)
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • visual harmony is the agreement or balance between design elements.
  • Two or more identical, or near identical elements are not only an expression of visual agreement, but the repetition also helps to catch and draw the eye into your design.
  •
This was my favorite of the different sites that I found on the topic of repetition. I thought that this site very closely followed what the Basic's of Design taught on the subject. The site gave a background of what repetition is and why it is important. It also gave great examples of different forms of repetition such as; repetition of a image/icon, border, or decoration. It really helped me understand why repetition is such a key component in design!

This website is a good, quick overview of certain parts of repetition in design. I like that they give picture examples to illustrate them.
  •
This web page caught my eye because it provided many examples of what repetition should be look like in different works .
  •
This is my favorite of the website I found that helped supplement my understanding for several reasons. I think the examples are great. Not only that it is very similar to the book in that it talks about repeating visual elements such as images, lines, even typefaces. The series of books are a perfect example because they show you can use repetition without being identical, as long as it is conceptual related.
  •
I like this article because it gives visual examples of repetition used in books, movies, and ads.
  •
This website has good examples of repetition and they explain it better when having an image. They have good images and good explanation.

Remediation - 0 views

This is my favorite of the websites that supplement my understanding of remediation because it does a great job of explaining the subject. It gives great examples of movies and events that involved remediation that I would know and this helped me understand it more.

An article from Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin from the MIT Press in 1999. Goes over what remediation is in new media.
  •
D#11, HW#3-- I thought this was a great example of remediation because it explains remediation and then uses different examples from movies to help people understand the meaning.
  •
This article analyzing Bolter, Grusin book has fianlly helped me "get it." For some reason this was hard for me to wrap my mind around, but the way it is re-stated here is better for me.
  •
This is a writing from Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin that defines remediation, hypermediacy and immediacy. It has very good descriptions written in a way we can relate to by bringing in examples that are familiar to us like the movie Jurassic Park and the Pathfinder landing on Mars.

D #6 HW #6 Choosing a WordPress Theme - 0 views

  •
A whole site dedicated to using Wordpress! There are so many themes that it's incredibly difficult to choose!  This site suggests going through the various view options, such as the front page view, single page view, and the comments, and them comparing how each appear. Is the sidebar present in all views or just some? Does the header change, etc.? The author of this site suggests going through and investigating every aspect of the new theme. The site also lists the various layout options and also suggests that content match theme. What impression do I wish my audience to have?
