    This article outlines five key areas that separate a professional from an employee. According to the author, exemplifying professionalism means talking the talk and walking the walk, with the attitude and behavior of possessing the appropriate skill, confidence and integrity needed within your career. In order to demonstrate professionalism within the workplace one must realize that character counts; it is important to uphold ethical standards even when no one is watching. Secondly, an individual must have a positive and enthusiastic attitude within the workplace. A professional will also always strive to achieve more, to achieve excellence. In addition, professionals demonstrate competency within their field, they are the best at what they do. Lastly, a professional always upholds the code of conduct outlined by his profession everywhere he goes.

    This article discusses a new method for evaluating students' competencies and performances during clinic experiences. Due to the increasing demand for higher education and increasing clinical experiences for medical professions, more and more student are required to participate in on-site learning experiences in order to obtain their degree. Unfortunately, there is a lack of literature to support assessments to accurately determine occupational therapy students' level of learning and progress during on-site teaching scenarios. The author of this article discusses an in-depth analysis of a new assessment developed for occupational therapy on-site clinical experiences. The assessment includes a five-point scale with 42 items in six domains. These domains include communication, documentation, safety and judgment, evaluation, intervention and professional behaviors. The five points range from dependent to self-directed. Professional literature and reasoning for domain and scale development are included in the article. The author concludes by stating that further research development and psychometric development needs to be completed in order to effectively incorporate the assessment into current clinical sites. The authors encourage occupational therapy programs to use the assessment and collaborate with the authors to further contribute to these areas of development.

    Home modifications aim to enhance safety and occupational performance in the home. However, given the complexity and unique meaning of the home, they can impact aspects other than function. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to explore the impact of home modifications on clients and their family's experience of home. The study found that home modifications impacted positively and negatively on five dimensions of the home environment, the personal, occupational, physical, temporal and social dimension. The outcomes of the modifications and the home modification process were influenced by three themes, workmanship, consultation or involvement in decision-making, and the societal dimension of the home environment. Conclusions: The negative outcomes and poor consultation experiences suggest the need for occupational therapists to understand their client's personal experience of home and to comprehensively follow-up and evaluate these following home modifications.

    This 2000 Slagle lecture discusses EBP in OT. The lecture begins by breaking down the 5 levels of evidence used in research as well as provides scenarios for use of EPB. It also stresses the importance of continuing education and staying up to date with the latest research so that you can defend that what you are doing works. The lecture also posed five questions that you can ask yourself to determine if you are being an EBP practitioner: Do I examine what I do by asking clinical questions? Do I take time to track down the best evidence for guidance? Do I appraise evidence or take it at face value? Do I use evidence to do the right thing correctly? and Do I evaluate the impact of the evidence?. The biggest barrier to EBP was described as each individual's own attitude and motivation towards implementing EBP.

    The purpose of this study was to explore occupational therapy faculty and students' perspectives of the meaning of professionalism. This qualitative study used convenience sampling to recruit eight second-year occupational therapy master's students and five occupational therapy faculty members to participate in two separate focus groups. Data analysis yielded the following student focus group themes: uncertainty about professional expectations; searching for answers through concrete concepts; and the context-specific nature of professionalism. Faculty focus group themes were professional responsibility; professional awareness. The findings of this study suggest that professionalism is a dynamic, context-specific concept requiring experience, awareness, and reasoning to arrive at an in depth understanding.

The resource is divided into five chapters with references and appendices also provided. Chapter one provides an introduction and rationale for the need of such as resource discussing supervision in occupational therapy. Chapter two gives definitions for what professional supervision is and is not in occupational therapy, as well as modes, functions and dual approaches in supervision. Chapter three discusses the components of supervision policy in occupational therapy. Chapter four gives an in-depth discussion of intervention strategies to enhance supervision. The final chapter provides a conclusion to the resource. References and Appendices follow with samples and discussion about a project process. This resource gives great information about supervision and allows the readers to gain a perspective of occupational therapy in Europe.

    This article outlines five steps to achieve professionalism in order to demonstrate that you have respect for your employer, your co-workers, as well as yourself. Oftentimes, individuals can demonstrate professionalism during the interviewing process or when meeting with individuals in higher management. However, professionalism should be practiced on a daily basis. There are various ways to demonstrate professionalism within the workplace, including but not limited to, dressing appropriately, respecting others, and actively engaging in learning experiences. The first step to demonstrating professionalism includes looking the part. First impressions are lasting impressions, and an individual's attire sends a message to others concerning how serious they are about their work. Secondly, a professional should always use proper grammar, regardless of the type of communication. In addition, individuals should seek additional tasks and challenges as a means to show responsibility as well as a desire to succeed and grow within their company. Professionals should show respect toward others in all interactions regardless of whether it is a consumer, co-worker, or upper management. Lastly, part of demonstrating professionalism includes admitting any mistakes or mishaps. A willingness to admit one's mistakes takes courage; however, these individuals are often more cautious employees.

    This resource shares 5 simple ways to increase professionalism. These ways include dressing appropriately and having proper hygiene. WHO and the CDC have different guidelines for hygiene so it is important to know and understand the appearance policies for the facility you are interviewing/working for. The use of proper grammar and communication skills in all forms of communication (written or verbal) is essential. It is also important to face challenges head on and to view challenging circumstances as learning opportunities. Always showing respect for others even in times of disagreement will show that you can handle yourself in a professional manner. The final suggestion was to always accept responsibility for mistakes.

    This study examined occupational performance issues amongst soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The researches focused on ways to motivate these individuals to participate in their daily occupations. Getting back to civilian life after serving in the military and experiencing war is the most challenging and most common mental health and brain injury. Thirty 20-29 year olds were interviewed using the COPM. These individuals were also screened for PTSD, depression, TBI, and alcohol abuse. The top five challenges of occupational performance from using the COMP were relationships, school physical health, sleeping and driving. The role of occupational therapy is vital for their individuals to reintegrate them into the communities and to the daily occupations.
