Using the Case Method to Develop Clinical Reasoning Skills in Problem-Based Learning | ... - 0 views

  •
This article focusing on techniques that can be used to develop clinical reasoning for Occupational Therapy students and new practitioners, in which it argues is the basis of all occupational therapy treatment. The article presents that using case studies within the classroom setting provides the ability for students to clinically reason, problem solve and develop treatment skills in a controlled way. It suggests using guiding questions based on student weakness that will promote growth and creativity in developing clinical reasoning skills. This article must have some merit because case studies have been used and continue to be used in a variety of classroom settings to this day including our own.

The purpose of this study is to describe currently used educational strategies for teaching evidence-based practice (EBP) in entry-level master's degree occupational therapy programs in the United States. Fifty-eight entry-level occupational therapy program directors completed a survey. Results showed that occupational therapy programs consistently use a wide variety of EBP resources for teaching EBP including database searches, literature reviews, and the development of a research proposal. Less commonly used strategies include the use of case stories and journal clubs. The current study provides a baseline of existing strategies taught in entry-level programs that may be built upon to gather more information about the content of EBP coursework, and determine ways to foster implementation of EBP in practice.

In Depth Review of the Multiple Errands Test (MET) - Stroke Engine - 0 views

  •
This test could be used in acute care. This assessment offers a hospital version (MET_HV) that would be appropriate in the VA setting. This test was developed for use with a wider range of participants than the original version; it has more concrete rules, simplification of task demands and space provided on the instruction sheet for the patient to record the information they were to collect. There are 12 separate subtasks within four sets of simple tasks. These four task sets are as follows: 1. The patient must complete six specific errands (purchase 3 items, use the phone, collect and envelope from reception and send a letter to an external address), 2. The patient must obtain and write down four items of designated information (e.g. the opening time of a shop on Saturday), 3. The patient must meet the assessor outside of the hospital reception in 20 minutes after the test had begun and state the time, 4. The client must inform the assessor when he/she finishes the test. The test cannot be administered to patients confined to bed due to the nature of the questions. The test would be difficult to complete on patients instructed to only get up with help as they would have to have a nurse available at the time they need to meet some of the task requirements. Both validity and reliability have been established for this test for various populations (see citation for specifics).

Effect of high-voltage pulsed current plus conventional treatment on acute ankle sprain... - 0 views

  •
Although this article is written in regards to HVPCs effect on ankle sprain, I used HVPC, concurrently with pulsed ultrasound in quite a few of my patients (carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, s/p elbow surgery, Dequervains, extensor tenosynovitis, etc). It proved to be very useful for cell/tissue healing and pain reduction in many of my patients. This modality involves the typical electrode placement of 4 pads crossing the affected area with a dispersive pad on the back or thigh, and we would use it in combination with therapeutic ultrasound. We also had two combo units we used, which did not require the use of electrode pads, rather the electric current came from the same sound head that the ultrasound was coming from, and we still used the dispersive pad on the back or thigh

This article talks about sound and how it creates new neural pathways in individuals with neurological dysfunction. They used a survey to see how OT's used sound-based interventions. It was concluded that these interventions are being used and are most commonly paid through private pay.

Our Mandate for the New Millennium: Evidence-Based Practice | American Journal of Occup... - 1 views

  •
This 2000 Slagle lecture discusses EBP in OT. The lecture begins by breaking down the 5 levels of evidence used in research as well as provides scenarios for use of EPB. It also stresses the importance of continuing education and staying up to date with the latest research so that you can defend that what you are doing works. The lecture also posed five questions that you can ask yourself to determine if you are being an EBP practitioner: Do I examine what I do by asking clinical questions? Do I take time to track down the best evidence for guidance? Do I appraise evidence or take it at face value? Do I use evidence to do the right thing correctly? and Do I evaluate the impact of the evidence?. The biggest barrier to EBP was described as each individual's own attitude and motivation towards implementing EBP.
