Adhesive taping vs. daily manual muscle stretching and splinting after botulinum toxin ... - 1 views

    In my rotation, we have treated a few stroke patients after BTX-A injections using splinting and a few other treatment methods. This article discovers the comparison of adhesive taping vs. daily manual muscle stretching and splinting after injections. A single-blind randomized control trail with 70 patients was conducted with patients experiencing wrist and finger flexor muscle spasticity post-stroke. After receiving the injections, patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group A consisted of adhesive taping. Adhesive taping is first placed on forearm and fingers and left for 10 days with daily checks. The tape provides traction on hypertonic muscles. Group B consisted of patient's receiving manual muscle stretching of injected muscles for 30 min and passive articular mobilization of wrist and fingers to maintain muscle length. Custom palmar splints with made for each patient and positioned for maximum stretching. Outcome measures used to to measure spasticity consisted of the Modified Ashworth scale, related disability with Disability Assessment Scale and finger positions at rest. At the end of the trial, it was discovered that patient in Group A, adhesive taping, had a significantly decrease in spasticity scores. Some limitations included lack of placebo group and longer follow-up data.

Animal assisted therapy for elderly residents of a skilled nursing facility - 0 views

    The number of residents in long-term nursing facilities with dementia and cognitive impairments is continuing to increase each year. Many studies have shown decreases in quality of life for residents with these diagnoses. This article studies the effects of animal assisted therapy compared to human interactions on social behaviors and engagement among elderly patients with dementia in a long-term care facility. Patients were randomly divided into two groups, a group with human interactions and a group with animal assisted therapy. The study was conducted over a two-week period of time. The human interaction group consisted on one-on-one time with general conversation and reading and looking at pictures in the newspaper. The animal assisted therapy group consisted of petting, brushing and talking to the dogs. Data was collected using the Demographic and Pet History Questionnaire and the Social Behaviors checklist. The results showed that animal assisted therapy had a positive impact on social behaviors and increased engagement in activities, while also decreasing incidents requiring staff members.

    The purpose of this study is to describe currently used educational strategies for teaching evidence-based practice (EBP) in entry-level master's degree occupational therapy programs in the United States. Fifty-eight entry-level occupational therapy program directors completed a survey. Results showed that occupational therapy programs consistently use a wide variety of EBP resources for teaching EBP including database searches, literature reviews, and the development of a research proposal. Less commonly used strategies include the use of case stories and journal clubs. The current study provides a baseline of existing strategies taught in entry-level programs that may be built upon to gather more information about the content of EBP coursework, and determine ways to foster implementation of EBP in practice.

    This article is analyzing the knowledge and confidence of EBP in OT students. A convenience sample of occupational therapy students from a private university completed a survey designed to measure students' knowledge and confidence in EBP. The survey consisted of the Knowledge of Research Evidence Competencies (K-REC) and the Evidence-Based Practice Confidence (EPIC) scale, as well as demographic questions. The participants in this study were confident in their ability to implement certain components of the EBP reference model. They demonstrated the most confidence in asking patients about their needs, conducting a literature search, and determining if the evidence applies to their client's situation. The participants were least confident in their EBP skills associated with using statistical procedures and statistical tests to interpret study results.

(2007) study aimed to evaluate the effect of a 1-year stress management program, aimed at reducing symptoms of depression and vital exhaustion (VE) in women in coronary heart disease (CHD). The study included 247 women who were conveniently recruited after a cardiac event of AMI, PCI, CABG at Karolinska University Hospital at Huddinge or at St. Gorans Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. The experimental group which included stress management (20 2-hour sessions) and medical care by a cardiologist or the control group that consisted of usual care health post heart surgeries with no stress management session. The study had many limitations, first were women who did not want to participate in the 1 year intervention were not compared to those who did. The study also did not enroll subjects who may have been considered healthier. The subjects in the treatment group were in the care of a cardiologist and the self-rated vital exhaustion and depressive symptom measures may have been biased. The results of the study included that vital exhaustion for both groups improved over time and the decreased amount of VE was more pronounced in the intervention group. The change in depressive symptoms between the two groups did not differ.

Construct validity test of evaluation tool for professional behaviors of entry-level oc... - 1 views

    This study aimed to test the construct validity of an instrument to measure professional behaviors in entry-level occupational therapy students. To do this, the researchers developed and validated an instrument that evaluates entry-level OT student professional behaviors. 718 students from 37 OT programs answered a self-assessment survey of professional behavior. The questionnaire in the survey consisted of two sections. The 1st section had questions about attributes related to professional behaviors and the second section had six items on demographic information of the respondents. From the survey, the researchers found that the most frequent student professional behavior issues were: lack of personal responsibility, social intolerance, disrespect of others, tardiness, missed appointments, excessive absences, failure to meet deadlines, and dress code violations. Another purpose of this study was to show that the instrument developed by the researchers could be indeed be validated and indeed provide valuable information that could be helpful for students as well as clinical supervisors and OT programs,

Reflection on the historical foundations of occupational therapy and related professions resulted in the inclusion of Principles that are consistently referenced as a guideline for ethical decision making. It is important to provide students with open communication which encourages students to ask questions and providing them with precise answers. Lastly, a successful clinical instructor will provide constructive feedback in a timely manner.

    This study consisted of 65 older adults who participated in a wellness program held at senior living apartments. This program aimed to teach older adults the importance of active engagement in meaningful occupation and social participation. They found that the individuals who benefited the most from this program attended more classes, were older, and did not drive.

The article was located on the AOTA website and provides a model state Regulation for supervision, roles, and responsibilities during the delivery of occupational therapy services. The purpose of the model is to provide a template for use by state agencies and occupational therapy regulatory boards when drafting or revising regulations to govern the clinical supervision of occupational therapy assistants, limited permit holders, and aides. The model is intended to help safeguard the public health, safety and welfare by establishing guidelines that are consistent with professional standards and accepted practice in the profession. I think this is a good model to have in place to guide state regulation policies.
