    The aim of this study was to explore the relationship among cognitive reserve, Executive function, and health and safety judgment among a sample of older adult inpatients of an extended medical care unit at a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) hospital. Independent Living Scales (ILS): Health and Safety subtest were used to assess judgement and safety. Executive function was measured by the Trial making test. Global function was measured by the MMSE. After controlling for global cognitive functioning, the results revealed that people with high estimated IQ performed similarly on a measure of health and safety judgment, regardless of their EF abilities. However, among individuals with low estimated IQ it appears that intact EF is critical in making appropriate health and safety decisions. Therefore, the results suggest executive functioning is critical for making appropriate health and safety decisions for patients with lower measured intellectual abilities and provide further support for the cognitive reserve model.

    This study examined the contents of supervision needed by novice therapists to develop clinical abilities, focusing on their clinical experience and using an original evaluation table. An evaluation of clinical abilities basic attitudes, therapeutic skills, and clinical practice-related thoughts was conducted in 29, 21, and 9 therapists with clinical experience of 0-1 (1 year group), 1-2 (2 years group), and 2-3 (3 years group) years, respectively. On comparison of scores for the 55 evaluation items focusing on clinical experience, there were no significant differences in those for basic attitudes-related items among the 3 groups, while those for therapeutic skills-related items markedly varied between the 1 and 3 years groups. In scores for clinical practice-related thoughts-related items, significant differences were observed between the 1 and 3 years groups and between the 2 and 3 years groups. On comparison of scores among the items in each group, there were marked differences between those related to basic attitudes and clinical practice-related thoughts in the 1 and 2 years groups.

    This article specifically relates to the importance of treating PTSD among veterans with appropriate psychotherapies. This article relates directly to the work I am currently involved in at the VA as many of the patients I see struggle daily with PTSD symptoms. In addition, an interdisciplinary team approach is used at the VA and pt's and staff work closely with psychologist and psychiatrists to ensure appropriate care. In looking at this article it is important to see that symptoms of PTSD are treated appropriately and with the best means available.

    The article addressed LACLS' ability to predict medication management through the use of MARS (Medication adherence Rating Scale. All participants reported that did not use medication aids despite evidence of impaired cognition. A strong, positive correlation was found between medication adherence and LACLS for participants that access mental health services in the community. This investigation has provided the first empirical evidence indicating that the LACLS may have utility as a screening instrument for capacity to manage medication adherence among this population. However, the findings are preliminary and should continue to be assessed by future studies to determine the specificity, sensitivity and cut off score for medication adherence.

    As individuals age, communication often times becomes more difficult due to loss of hearing and eye sight.     This PDF document was part of a training course provided by Kansas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. This particular document outlines various psychosocial needs of the elderly, and various strategies health care professionals can utilize to help provide more person-centered care. Psychosocial needs/issues can arise as a result of the many changes that can occur during older adulthood. This article outlines seven changes that frequently occur in older adulthood that can present potential issues when individuals do not adjust to the changes. For instance, family changes occur as parents who used to care for their children are now being cared for by their children. Individuals may face retirement, and no longer have a sense of who they are without a job title. Older adults may experience an awareness of their mortality as loved ones die and their health declines. Individuals may lose their spouse and companion. Fear of loss of independence may set in as persons experience a decline in health and their physical abilities. Poor adjustment to changes in income after retirement can trigger psychosocial issues. Finally, loneliness may occur as children become busy, older adults do not drive, and spouses and friends die. All of these various factors can create psychosocial needs within a person's life. This article does a great job at not only defining why psychosocial issues may be present within this population, but also provides strategies to help older adults find joy in their lives again and help address their psychosocial needs. For instance, the article focuses on building on lifelong interests and offering new activities that an individual can engage in for pleasure.

    This study used a pretest-postost control group design to determine whether or not the Get Ready to Learn (GRTL) classroom yoga program decreased challenging behaviors in children with ASD. The intervention group participated in the GRTL yoga program for 16 weeks while the control group went through their morning routine as usual. Challenging behaviors were assessed in both groups by using standardized measures and behavior coding before and after the intervention. The study found that daily classroom wide yoga interventions has a significant impact on key classroom behaviors among children with ASD.
