Occupational Therapy Incorporating Animals for Children with Autism: A Pilot Investigation - 0 views

shared by scamarata1 on 16 Oct 16 - No Cached
  •
This study compared language use and social interaction in children with autism who received two forms of occupational therapy. The first form was using standard techniques and the other form incorporated animals. Twenty-two children between the ages of 7 and 13 from a public school in Virigina received both forms of therapy in a school based occupational therapy program for children with autism. The results suggest that the children had a greater use of language and social interaction in sessions incorporating animals when compared to sessions using standard occupational therapy techniques. These findings add to the growing body of evidence that the therapeutic use of animals may be an effective way to engage a wide variety of therapy clients, as well as to enhance the effectiveness of established occupational therapy techniques.

Clinical Reasoning in Medicine Compared With Clinical Reasoning in Occupational Therapy... - 1 views

shared by brittali on 30 Nov 16 - No Cached
  •
The purpose of this clinical reasoning study was to identify frequent clinical reasoning processes of occupational therapists, to compare and contrast clinical reasoning used frequently in medicine. For example, majority of medical clinical reasoning's is related to diagnosis. This article found "diagnosis occupied very little of the therapists' reasoning time. Patients came to therapy with a medical diagnosis, and the therapist's task was to know how that diagnostic condition would influence present and future function". Differences are accounted for by the difference in the particular focus, goals, and tasks of the two professions and the nature of the practice in those arenas. Although occupational therapists work with persons with physical disabilities, the nature and goals of the practice differ from the goals of physicians. It therefore makes sense that therapist's knowledge, interests, and the reasoning strategies would also differ.

Supervision of OT's over COTA's - 0 views

  •
In working in a school system with many COTA's, I am learning the responsibilities OT's have in supervising COTA's. I found these frequently asked questions about the responsibilities of OT's and COTA's in a school system and I think its something worth looking at if working in a school system. Unfortunately, these are through the state of Nevada board of OT. I tried looking up information on Ohio's responsibilities but could only find a PowerPoint, which I could not bookmark for Diigo. If interested further in OT and COTA's responsibilities, look into comparing the state of Nevada and Ohio's regulations.

Assessing Capacity in the Elderly: Comparing the MoCA with a Novel Computerized Battery... - 0 views

  •
The MoCA also measures a wider range of abilities including executive functions, a higher level cognitive ability required for the implementation of goal-directed behavior and the process of creating and fulfilling a plan. For these reasons, the MoCA was chosen as the comparator assessment of cognition in this study. The cut off score for the MoCA has widely been research and inconclusive. The original cut off score was 26/30 for normal cognition, however many argue the score is too low. This study suggests a computerized battery (CBS- Cambridge Brain Sciences Battery) for patients scoring 23-26, that have a borderline cognitive impairment in order to classify them as impaired or unimpaired. Five tasks from the original 12 of the CBS were chosen to assess aspects of short-term memory, attention, reasoning, and planning. Results: Only two of the tasks were able to distinguish between impaired and unimpaired. Utilizing these tasks in conjunction with the MoCA provides more information regarding testers that fall in the "borderline" category 23-26. The older adults were accepting of the electronic technology.
