Measurement of Functional Cognition and Complex Everyday Activities in Older Adults wit... - 1 views

  •
The article explores the validity of the LACLS-5 (Allen's cognitive level screen) to assess and distinguish adults living in the community with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia. Individuals with mild dementia scored less on all clinical measures than cognitively normal (CN) individuals, however individuals with MCI scored intermediately compared to CN adults. LACLS-5 was able to adequately discriminate between CN and dementia and between MCI and dementia but was unable to reliably distinguish between CN and MCI. Despite these results of tool's inability to distinguish between CN and MCI, LACLS-5 was found to be a significantly effective tool to assess functional cognition.

Effectiveness of Interventions to Prevent Falls in People With Alzheimer's Disease and ... - 1 views

  •
This is a systematic review of the effectiveness of interventions to prevent falls in people with the psychosocial disorders of Alzheimer's and dementia. I picked this article because my fieldwork is currently in a skilled nursing facility and I read about the many falls that happen that lead to the patients coming to the facility. The article focuses on three types of interventions including exercise, nursing staff interventions, and multidisciplinary interventions. the article mentioned that although all three intervention showed some data of effectiveness the studies used had many limitations. In addition, occupational therapy was seldom mentioned in the studies, the article mentions the big opportunity there is for occupational therapist to address this issue.

As the title suggests, this article discusses occupational therapy interventions aimed at modifying the environment for persons with Alzheimer's disease as well as all forms of dementia. The article is a systematic review which provides the reader with insight into the different types of environmental modifications commonly utilized by occupational therapy practitioners as well as their effectiveness. This particular article is certainly a good read for those of us who are currently completing our level II fieldwork in a SNF, as Alzheimer's disease and related dementias are very common in such settings.

The Brief Cognitive Assessment Tool (BCAT): A new test emphasizing contextual memory, e... - 1 views

  •
The BCAT's utility for identifying dementia versus mild cognitive impairment was excellent, with a sensitivity of .99, a specificity of .77, and an area under the receiver-operatingcharacteristic (ROC) curve of .95. Executive control, contextual memory, and attentional capacity items were the best predictors of diagnostic category and of instrumental activities of daily living. From a clinical standpoint, it is recommended a BCAT cut score of 37/38 for differentiating between persons with dementia and those with MCI. This means that patients who have scores of 37 and below are likely to have dementia. This research utilized a population residing in assisted living facilities. Future studies should address a cut off for mild cognitive impairment and non-impaired and community dwelling adults.

Early Functional Limitations in Cognitively Normal Older Adults Predict Diagnostic Conv... - 1 views

  •
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to record brain activation during cognitive testing in older individuals living in residential care communities. Using fNIRS, brain signals were recorded during a series of computerized cognitive tests, including a Symbol Digit Coding test (SDC), Stroop Test (ST), and Shifting Attention Test (SAT). An association between advanced age and increased activation in the right middle frontal region was observed during the incongruent ST. Although none of the participants had clinical dementia based on the short portable mental status questionnaire, the group performance was slightly below age-normed values on these cognitive tests. These results demonstrate the capability for obtaining functional neuroimaging measures in residential settings, which ultimately may aid in prognosis and care related to dementia in older adults. If families are educated to look for signs for family members that have dementia they are easily able to discuss long term planning and prevent adverse events due to impaired cognition.

Animal assisted therapy for elderly residents of a skilled nursing facility - 0 views

  •
The number of residents in long-term nursing facilities with dementia and cognitive impairments is continuing to increase each year. Many studies have shown decreases in quality of life for residents with these diagnoses. This article studies the effects of animal assisted therapy compared to human interactions on social behaviors and engagement among elderly patients with dementia in a long-term care facility. Patients were randomly divided into two groups, a group with human interactions and a group with animal assisted therapy. The study was conducted over a two-week period of time. The human interaction group consisted on one-on-one time with general conversation and reading and looking at pictures in the newspaper. The animal assisted therapy group consisted of petting, brushing and talking to the dogs. Data was collected using the Demographic and Pet History Questionnaire and the Social Behaviors checklist. The results showed that animal assisted therapy had a positive impact on social behaviors and increased engagement in activities, while also decreasing incidents requiring staff members.

Descrpition of Dementia Caregiver Uplifts and Implications for Occupational Therapy - 1 views

  •
This study examined the role of OT and how they can assist caregivers who care for those with dementia. Most OT interventions for caregivers are designed to reduce negative consequences of caregiving by building skills to manage those problems. Caregivers often face depression, stress, work overload, and caregiver burden when they can no longer care for their loves ones anymore. This study examined 15 caregivers who were caring for their spouses and their caregiver duties were analyzed and observed. Ways OT can educate those caregivers are by training them to engage in positive behaviors and making adjustments in their attitudes. Taking this approach as a caregiver will promote positive thinking and acts as they care for their loved ones.
