    In this article researches assessed the effectiveness of sensory-enhanced Hatha Yoga on symptoms of combat stress for deployed military personnel. In this study the researchers compared the anxiety and sensory processing abilities of the deployed military personnel with stateside civilians using the State-Trial Anxiety Inventory scales and the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile Quadrants. There was a total of 70 participants, 35 received 3 wks of treatment and 35 did not. The sensory-enhanced hatha yoga was shown to be effective in reducing state and trait anxiety. Researchers also found positive correlations with all test measures excepts sensory seeking, which was negatively correlated with all measures except low registration. These results support the use of sensory enhanced hatha yoga as a proactive approach for stress management for deployed military personnel.

    This article explores the components of practice that make occupational therapy practitioners feel prepared to integrate research into their practice. According to this article, many practitioners in the field feel that they lack the necessary skills required to incorporate innovative research into their practice of occupational therapy. The authors of this article conducted a study to determine what characteristics and behaviors would foster the utilization of research. Eleven occupational therapy practitioners working in stroke rehabilitation participated in the study. The therapists completed a self-report and were interviewed by the authors. The researchers discovered that participants' clinical experience, engagement in continuing education, involvement in research activities and mentoring students all contributed to utilization of research into occupational therapy practice. The authors concluded that research utilization should be enhanced through means of professional development, which will guide practitioners in learning activities, provide opportunities to foster the behaviors discovered in the research study and enhance occupational therapists' capacity to incorporate research into their practice.

    This article, published by AJOT in July 2006, is titled Occupational Therapy Activities and Intervention Techniques for Clients With Stroke in Six Rehabilitation Hospitals. As the title suggests, this article discusses various occupational therapy intervention strategies, as well as their effectiveness, for the treatment of patients with CVAs. Control of upper extremity exercises as well as activities of daily living practice were the most common form of occupational therapy intervention techniques utilized.

    I chose this article because I treat many CVA patients in my setting. I was curious to see how the typical VA treatments related to other hospitals with their treatments. The results were very similar. Mainly we work on functional activities and we add in some exercising to strengthen and further enhance the functional abilities.

    Home modifications aim to enhance safety and occupational performance in the home. However, given the complexity and unique meaning of the home, they can impact aspects other than function. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to explore the impact of home modifications on clients and their family's experience of home. The study found that home modifications impacted positively and negatively on five dimensions of the home environment, the personal, occupational, physical, temporal and social dimension. The outcomes of the modifications and the home modification process were influenced by three themes, workmanship, consultation or involvement in decision-making, and the societal dimension of the home environment. Conclusions: The negative outcomes and poor consultation experiences suggest the need for occupational therapists to understand their client's personal experience of home and to comprehensively follow-up and evaluate these following home modifications.

    This study examined whether utilizing the FIM in conjunction with the COPM would enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of occupational therapy evaluations. The use of the COPM provides the therapists with a more thorough understanding of the client. The results indicated that the use of the COPM with the FIM does enhance the accuracy of the evaluation process and leads to a better prediction of client outcomes at discharge.

    This exert is specifically from the VA handbook in regards to supervision specifically for health professionals and trainees. This resource provides a strict breakdown of the supervision requirements for supervisors and trainees. It is clear through this policy that strict guidelines are to be followed within this system and this is what I have experienced in my time there. I was intrigued however, that supervisory roles are seen as an educational experience. The following tenet was the first under supervisor regulation--" Supervision is an educational experience provided by a qualified supervising practitioner with a trainee. This relationship is evaluative, extends over time, and has the simultaneous purposes of enhancing the professional functioning of the trainee while monitoring the quality of services delivered. Supervision is provided through observation, consultation, directing the learning and activities of the trainee, and role modeling". I feel that this really stressing the educational importance of being a supervisor.

    The scope of this handout created by North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is a guide for school based therapist when determining if a child is in need of services in the school. This document states that if the child cannot have access to their education or will not experience educational benefit then occupational therapy services are relevant and could be necessary in order to enhance the child's educational success. Alternatively, this handout also addresses when occupational therapy services are not warranted. Some indicators to know when services are not needed include 1) the needs can be addressed by a special educator or school faculty 2) can needs be addressed during non school hours and/or 3) will providing services lead to an unnecessary gaps or contraindications with other necessary services. These simple guidelines can help the therapist to clinically reason if the student requires services and why or why not. Another great piece of this handout is discussing when occupational therapy services can be discontinued. This section helps the therapist walk through the necessary step in order to accurately determine if services are still needed.

    This study compared language use and social interaction in children with autism who received two forms of occupational therapy. The first form was using standard techniques and the other form incorporated animals. Twenty-two children between the ages of 7 and 13 from a public school in Virigina received both forms of therapy in a school based occupational therapy program for children with autism. The results suggest that the children had a greater use of language and social interaction in sessions incorporating animals when compared to sessions using standard occupational therapy techniques. These findings add to the growing body of evidence that the therapeutic use of animals may be an effective way to engage a wide variety of therapy clients, as well as to enhance the effectiveness of established occupational therapy techniques.

The resource is divided into five chapters with references and appendices also provided. Chapter one provides an introduction and rationale for the need of such as resource discussing supervision in occupational therapy. Chapter two gives definitions for what professional supervision is and is not in occupational therapy, as well as modes, functions and dual approaches in supervision. Chapter three discusses the components of supervision policy in occupational therapy. Chapter four gives an in-depth discussion of intervention strategies to enhance supervision. The final chapter provides a conclusion to the resource. References and Appendices follow with samples and discussion about a project process. This resource gives great information about supervision and allows the readers to gain a perspective of occupational therapy in Europe.

    This article is from the American Journal of Occupational Therapy. I felt that it went along with our discussion about becoming fieldwork educators in the future. This study researches the effectiveness of case studies that influence clinical reasoning vs, typical educational case studies. This study goes into depth about clinical reasoning and how it influences educational experiences of students. The research participants, OT students, were asked to complete intervention plans based on client needs and in response to both the medical model of clinical reasoning and paper case study educational methods of learning. Information was qualitatively reviewed to analyze the intervention plans and videotaped discussions were used to guide clinical reasoning process/learning experience. The results showed that clinical reasoning case studies, compared to traditional case studies, promoted three main themes including increased quality of intervention plans, participant confidence levels in treatment plans, and enhanced understanding of the clinical reasoning process. This study is important for FEs and educators to increase clinical reasoning process of students as well as interventions for clients.

    The tree theme method (TTM) is an interventions that utilizes drawing/painting trees symbolic of different periods in a patient's life. These artwork creations are then used to begin sharing life stories. This study investigated the long-term effects of TTM upon self-perceptions of well-being and occupational performance. Outcomes of the study indicate that the TTM may be beneficial to patients' well-being and performance of everyday occupations.

    This was a study that looked at more effective ways to train students in wheelchair transfers with more dependent patients. Typically, the curriculum allows for transfer practice using other peers. This study occurred in a high-technology laboratory with SimMan technology and mock hospital suite. The SimMan replicates what a dependent transfer patient would be like. The mock hospital suite simulated an acute care setting, complete with medical equipment, vital signs, lines and drains in place. Scenarios were developed for the students with the assistance of practicing occupational therapists. These scenarios included an acutely ill patient, a critical medical management event that occurred during bed-to-wheelchair transfer and occupational need. Students completed 66-88% of transfer items correctly and showed that simulated scenarios were more difficult that practitioners rated them. Student rated this simulation as an effective, more realistic teaching tool. Students attributed this kind of simulation as a positive contribution to curriculum and promoted greater procedural and clinical reasoning skills.
