Psychosocial needs - 0 views

This article from AOTA discusses the role of OT in palliative care and relates to the psychosocial needs of clients in this area. It examines the occupational therapy approach in meaningful occupations as holistic and client-centered which "fosters a sense of independence and self-efficacy amidst the challenges of living with debilitating symptoms. The ability to carry out activities of daily living (ADL) is an important goal for patients with life threatening illness, and also has implications for work, social life, relationships, and family and home structure." The article provides examples of intervention for clients in palliative care including, ADLs, IADLs, rest and sleep, play, leisure, social participation, and interpersonal. I think the interpersonal, leisure, and social participation aspects of OT in palliative care going along with clients psychosocial needs. Engaging clients in discussion, coping strategies, and encouraging communication among family members are essential roles of an OT in palliative care.

This video is part of a 6 short video series that reviews different types of reasoning including clinical, professional, pragmatic, ethical, procedural, interactive, conditional, and generalization reasoning. These videos were developed to introduce students to the types of reasoning and meant to stimulate discussion in the classroom. The speaker, Robert Ferguson, explains clinical reasoning as being an aspect of professional reasoning using logical thinking to provide, influence, and reflect on patient care. He states clinical reasoning relates to the medical model in which you use various ways of reasoning developed according to the population, condition, background, etc. of the patient you are working with.

This is a short article from the Advanced Healthcare Network for Occupational Therapy Practitioners. It reviews 5 steps to strive for to develop professional behavior including looking the part, the importance of correct grammar, excepting tasks and challenges with a head on approach, showing respect to others, and accepting accountability to mistakes or mishaps. I liked this article because it reviewed several aspects of professionalism that I think many people tend to forget as they move through their career. As a fieldwork student it is essential to always practice professionalism but it is still just as important to continue to practice this as we gain experience in the field. I thought showing respect to others and accepting accountability for your mistakes were two points that really show professional behavior. As they say, the therapy world is small, you want to make a good impression on all that you encounter.

This article identifies ethical dilemmas experienced by OT and PTs, comparing the context, theme, and principles between the two groups. Over 118 OTs and 107 PTs answered a provided questionnaire based over a 6 month period. Many of the ethical dilemmas for OTs occurred in the mental health setting. The themes mostly differed among OT and PT professionals. The number one theme among OTs was the difficult/dangerous behavior of patients and among PTs was the unfair allocation/lack of resources. One common theme shared by both professionals was the unprofessional/incompetent staff. I found this article interesting in the fact that it compares the views of two professions that are different but work together for a common goal.
