JAMA Network | JAMA | Association of All-Cause Mortality With Overweight and Obesity Using Standard Body Mass Index CategoriesA Systematic Review and Meta-analysisAll-Cause Mortality Using BMI Categories - 0 views

  •
Don't get to excited about this article.  It is just a meta-analysis.  Second, they looked at BMI and BMI is a notoriously bad estimater of muscle mass versus fat content.  I am the perfect example, my BMI has me as obese, yet my measured fat % is 16%.   My read on this, is most of the individuals that are "overweight" are actually at a health weight with a higher muscle mass percentage not picked up with the BMI measurement.

The Ketogenic Diet and Sport: A Possible Marriage? : Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews - 0 views

  • It is important to note that, although the blood level of glucose drops, it still remains at a physiological level (23), which is maintained through gluconeogenesis involving glucogenic amino acids and also glycerol released from triglycerides
  • “physiological ketosis” where KB levels may rise to 7 to 8 mmol L-1 (but without any pH change). In “pathological diabetic ketoacidosis,” on the other hand, ketonemia can exceed 20 mmol L-1 and also cause lowering of blood pH
  • in the initial phase of KD, about 16% of glucose comes from glycerol (released from triglyceride hydrolysis) and the bulk (60–65 g) from proteins via gluconeogenesis (proteins may be of either dietary or endogenous origin
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • the protein supply consumed during a KD “preserves,” as demonstrated, lean body mass
  • The importance of glycerol as a glucose source increases progressively during ketosis; in fact, glycerol passes from supplying 16% of total glucose to an average of 60% after many days (>7 d) of complete fasting (from 38% in lean individual to 79% in the obese).
  • The possible reasons for the effectiveness of KD for weight loss may be listed as follows, in order of evidence, strongest first: Figure 3Image Tools 1. Appetite reduction: protein satiety, effects on appetite-related hormones such as ghrelin, and possibly a sort of direct appetite-blocking effect of KB 2. Reduced lipogenesis and increased fat oxidation 3. A reduction in respiratory quotient may indicate a greater metabolic efficiency in fat oxidation 4. A thermic effect of proteins and increased energy usage by gluconeogenesis
  • all data regarding biochemical and molecular mechanisms suggest that it is very difficult to increase muscle mass during a KD; use of which really should be limited to the few days immediately before competition in bodybuilding.
  • a long-term KD can interfere with some muscle hypertrophy mechanisms and this could be counterproductive if the aim of the athlete is to gain muscle mass

Testosterone Treatment Enhances Regional Brain Perfusion in Hypogonadal Men: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism: Vol 88, No 7 - 0 views

  • it is established that androgen modulates various neurotransmitters in the CNS. Testosterone decreases γ-aminobutyric acid concentration in the hypothalamus, which is blocked by flutamide, a testosterone receptor blocker (14, 15). Testosterone, probably by its conversion to estradiol, increases serotonin transporter mRNA expression in dorsal raphe nucleus (16), and it also increases the density of 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors and serotonin transporter sites in the forebrain (3, 16) of castrated male rats.
  •
very interesting study of 7 men.  Increase brain perfusion found and symptom improvement as a result of Testosterone therapy in men ages 58-72.  Specific increase perfusion by SPECT scans were in the midbrain and Brodman areas 8 and 24 of the cerebral cortex.

Prevalence and Correlates of Late-Onset Hypogonadism Among Korean Men Aged 40 Years or Older in Primary Care - 0 views

  •
Study of Korean men finds late onset of hypogonadism to be 16.8% in their study of 1,235 men older than 40.  This is a higher rate than other studies, but lower than others (38.7% in American men).  The test definition of low T was set at 3.2 ng/ml.  Abdominal obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and increasing age were associated with low T. Low T is clearly not a problem unique to America.  It definitely appears that a decreasing Testosterone level is a marker of poor health in men.

Aromatase and regulation of the estrogen-to... [Ann N Y Acad Sci. 2014] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
Study looked at inflammatory markers in RA.  The authors point to high aromatase activity, low androgens, and elevated estrone in synovial fluid as an indicator of a link between aromatase activity and inflammation production through E1 production.  The authors also point to the 16 alpha metabolite pathway as pro-inflammatory as well.  One very interesting point made by the authors is that vitamin D down regulates aromatase activity.  In addition to NK-kappaB inhibition, this may be another mechanism by which vitamin D reduces inflammation.

Wheelchairs is designed for those who prefer a removable armrest wheelchair. A removable armrest allows for easy patient transfer in and out of the chair. This chair is available in a different seat width and comes complete with swingaway footrests. It also incorporates solid rubber casters for a smooth and easy roll. Both detachable and flip-back arms are designed for easier lateral transfers. Most Wheelchairs in this category have Desk-Length arms, a shorter arm that allows rolling up to a desk or table. All are folding-frame chairs and are available in different seat widths. Detachable armrest for use in conjunction with wheelchairs. The armrest is comprised of a horizontal member supported at one end by a vertical member. The horizontal and vertical members are releasably attached to the wheelchair frame, and the attachment of the horizontal member to the wheelchair frame allows rotation of the horizontal member from the normal position to a position of non-use behind the back of the wheelchair. Wheelchairs - Arm Rests: The armrests support the arms and shoulders in comfortable positions and are often used to push off of for transferring from sitting to standing or held on to for balance. Desk-length armrests are shorter than standard length rests and are often chosen so that a person can pull up to a desk or table for easier access. The shorter length of these armrests is undesirable if the wheelchair user needs to use them to assist pushing into a standing position. In this case a full-length armrest would be preferred. Wheelchairs - Footrests: The footrest and legrest support protect the lower leg and feet. If they are too high they decrease the weight carried through the back of the thighs and can cause increased pressure over the buttock region. If they are two low they can cause pressure over the posterior thighs and cause problems with clearing barriers in the environment such as incline transitions. The suggested height of the footrest from th

Estrogen Metabolism and Risk of Breast Cancer in Postmenopausal Women - 0 views

  • The ratio of the 2-hydroxylation pathway to parent estrogens was associated with a statistically significantly decreased risk of breast cancer
  • In this study, this ratio was more strongly associated with the risk of breast cancer compared with the ratio of 2-hydroxylation pathway to 16-hydroxylation pathway or unconjugated estradiol alone
  • 2-hydroxylation pathway catechols have relatively low affinities for estrogen receptors (4) and are rapidly cleared from circulation
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • In this study, the ratio of the 2-hydroxylation pathway to the 16-hydroxylation pathway was associated with a non-statistically significantly decreased risk of breast cancer
  • In this study, the ratio of catechols to methylated catechols in the 4-hydroxylation pathway was associated with statistically significantly increased risk of breast cancer.
  • This result is consistent with the hypothesis that mutagenic quinones derived from 4-hydroxylation pathway catechols contribute to pathogenesis of postmenopausal breast cancer.
  • Catechols in both the 2- and 4-hydroxylation pathways can be oxidized to form quinones; these reactive electrophiles can then react with DNA to form a variety of adducts
  • Methylation of the catechols prevents their conversion to reactive quinones
  • the most common DNA adducts derived from 4-hydroxylation pathway catechols are depurinating and highly mutagenic (7,40), most of those derived from 2-hydroxylation pathway catechols are stable and can be repaired with little error
  •
Lower 2-OH estrone metabolism associated with lower risk of breast cancer, but 4-OH estrone associated with increased risk of breast cancer.
