Wellness and living a healthy life have evolved to represent more than being physically fit. No longer is it enough to make it to the gym and sweat. Today, being healthy and alive involves a more complex and systematic approach that integrates states of physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
The article is about seven different states of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Its touch occupational wellness as well, explains how to achieve a balance between work and leisure time. Its describes how to be able accept our feelings, rather than deny them, how to take on challenges, and recognize conflicts.
I found a lot of these tips useful! It is important that we take time to ourselves in hopes to maintain a healthy and well balanced life. I especially liked the idea of scheduling a work out so that it doesn't get pushed aside. I know that if I schedule something I am more likely to do it.
I found these tips for maintaining health and wellness for college students. Although some of these tips won't apply to clients, I think that applying some of these techniques in our own lives could potentially help us all to become better focused on learning. We have to take care of our own bodies in order to be able to treat clients.
Between exams, papers and maintaining an active social life, many college students feel they can't really find the time to keep up on their personal health and wellness until an illness catches hold and stops them in their tracks.

Evaluate Your Lifestyle All of us want optimal health. But many of us do not know how to achieve it. Taking this quiz, adapted from one created by the U. S. Public Health Service, is a good place to start. The behaviors covered in the test are recommended for most Americans.
The Job Accommodation Network put this information together because the number of workers over 65 is going to increase dramatically as the baby boomers age. The benefits for hiring an older worker are listed as well as the laws protecting workers. This is a nice resource for those older workers to know what rights they have and what accommodations are even available. Some accommodations cover ADLs, weakness or fatigue, hearing limitations, vision limitations, psychological issues, to name a few. I thought it was really helpful that a few situations were presented with possible solutions. Also, for the consumer, is a link to products for accommodation options.
This AOTA article defines "restraint", provides information on the role of OT in regards to providing restraint reduction or elimination, and lists common environments where this type of intervention takes place. By assessing what client-centered modifications, as well as environmental modifications, can be made, occupational therapy looks for ways "around" the use of restraints in order to enhance the client's engagement and participation in meaningful occupations.
This lady is great! She is an amputee OT! She gives a great personal perspective as well as clinical perspective. In this video she walks us through different kinds of shrinkers, how to apply, her opinions on them, etc. Such a unique view!
Glad I'm not the only one who subscribed to her. I saw her videos a while back when I was searching for prosthesis information. She is apparently originally from TN as well!
This is the website that our Phys Dys book provides regarding the ROM Dance Program. It incorporates medically recommended joint exercises and gentle movement and is used with clients with arthritis as well as other physical impairments as a warm up or cool down for more involved therapy. It appears you must be certified to teach the dance.
This is a really interesting study that I read,"An Occupational Therapist Perspective on Sexual Health." This particular study is about how confident they are when OTs are talking to their clients about sex. If the client ask a question pertaining to sex, how many don't think twice about answering and do they answer the question correctly. Another thing that I found interesting in this study is that health professions were surveyed: Thee professionals were asked and about 90% of the surveyed population said sex talk was holistic, but only 6% reported that they discussed it. So, if OT knows that it is an important aspect. Why don't we talk more often? - Well, read and see!! ; )
I decided to share this article as I was unaware that there is a specific group to help farmers continue to live and work independently. In the rural area I live in, this information will definitely be needed. Many of the physical disabilities I witnessed in nursing homes and in outpatient settings were direct results of farming injuries. As well, farmers are very self-sufficient and their self worth is based mostly on their ability to maintain their lifestyle.
This is a tip sheet I discovered on the AOTA website. It provides very useful tips for helping your older parent remain at home and age in place safely, as well as ways to approach the topic with them. I really loved the idea of presenting home modifications as gifts. This tip sheet is of particular interest to me as my mother slowly descends into the world of Alzheimer's disease.
