Inappropriate Patient Sexual Behavior - 2 views

  •
This article talks about Innappropriate Patient Sexual Behavior and how to deal with it in a very assertive way. It says to never ignore the problem and to always handle it in a very assertive yet non threatening way. The most important comment that to take away is: "Patient behavior is about the patient and NOT about YOU" - this is good to remember in all patient scenarios. Vol. 23 *Issue 20 * Page 40 Inappropriate Patient Sexual Behavior Part II: Choosing appropriate responses This is the second article in a two-part series on understanding and handling inappropriate patient sexual behavior in the health care setting. Part one appeared in the Sept.

Sexuality and the Role of Occupational Therapy - 5 views

Sex is a taboo subject for some people, but as future OTA's we need learn how to be able to answer questions about sex. If as a therapist we are uncomfortable discussing sex, we aren't establishing a very good therapeutic use of self if we can not effectively communicate with the client their concerns regarding sex.
  •
This is an article on AOTA website that talks about how important addressing sexuality in the OT field is and the interventions we might take to address sexuality with our clients. Always helpful to have these facts and examples on hand for our future.

Sexuality is a core characteristic and formative factor for human beings. It is a state of mind, representing our feelings about ourselves, what it's like to be male or female, how we relate to people of our own gender and those of the opposite gender, how we establish relationships, and how we express ourselves. This article from AOTA was helpful for me when we were going over sexuality in class. It mentions some specific areas OT can address.

  •
Huge thanks go to our two guest contributors for their summaries of the #OTalk on Sexuality. #OTalk: Discussing sexuality in OT practice (completed by @michelliwelli) 21 February 2012 One of the first questions that were asked was whether sex is an occupation. There was agreement that it was an occupation despite Kielhofner's previous assertions that...

this is a great website and has pics of different positions for having sex in a wheelchair. I thought it was very interesting and shows stick figure graphics on ways I would never think of but can be used when educating patients. It also has hyperlinks to topics such as body image, relationships, sexual violence and harassment for those with disabilities.

Lisa, I saw that website too :). I liked that it had tabs on info for family, partners and doctors.

Sexuality and people with disabilities: What experts often are not aware of - 4 views

  •
For most people sexuality is a very intimate area of their personal life which they do not wish to share with other people with the exception, perhaps, of a few very close persons. On the other hand, other peoples' sex life is of great interest to a large part of the population as evidenced by the huge market for sex-oriented films, magazines and similar products.

This article has a great list of websites for patients, care givers, and therapist. Great resource for sex and OT.

People with lower limb amputation and their sexual functioning and sexual well-being - 0 views

  •
This seems like about the only research out there on sex with an LE amputation. ABSTRACT: Sexual adjustment following lower extremity amputation was evaluated by interviewing 60 adults with recent amputations, 39 men and 21 women, after they had become independent in ambulation with a prosthesis. Among the men, 77% reported a substantial decrease in the frequency of sexual intercourse following amputation, while only 38% of the women reported a decrease.

What Does a Sex Therapist Do? - 2 views

  •
This article interested me as it does make reference to sexual surrogacy. It states that most sexual therapy is verbal however some cases do require the use of a sexual surrogate therapist. As the author of this article practices in the Fair Oaks, California area, this would lead me to believe that sexual surrogates are legal at least in some states.

Taboo topic of sexual surrogates and providing intimacy professionally - 2 views

  •
This is a company that provides sexual surrogacy (the topic that Tyler brought up in our class) and resources for those with disabilities to explore and fulfill their sexual needs. This is obviously not a light topic of discussion and some may take offense with what this company offers, but it is a conversation that is worth discussing. Individuals with disabilities may have a harder time understanding and exploring their sexuality. Society has a tendency to desexualize those with disabilities because it is not a topic that most people are comfortable discussing and families/caregivers might even infantilize those that they care for because of their level of dependence.

An Occupational Therapist as a Sexual Health Clinician in the Management of Spinal Cor... - 0 views

I enjoyed what this article spoke about. It seems to me to have a little of all the things we have spoken about in relation to sexual activity and the basic steps on how we can help our clients. Even though the article was set up for spinal cord injuries I feel the steps could be helpful for a lot more.

Disabled men "emasculated" and "patronised" by social care services, study finds. - 1 views

  •
Being a man, I often think that if I suffered from a disability that left me dependent on others I might feel a bit 'less than' and this article discusses a study that covers the topic of emasculation in males who are dependent on caregivers. Sexuality is a big part of most people's life and just because someone suffers from a disability doesn't mean that they cease to exist as a sexual being. The article also discusses how the approach to social care is typically asexual and that this approach can come across as patronizing, dismissive, and even disrespectful to a client's sexuality.

Sexual Health for Women - 2 views

  •
This article addresses the fact that just because you may be paralyzed does not mean your libido and need for sexual expression changes. It also goes on the talk about orgasms and how women can achieve a "normal orgasm", breast health, and birth control.
  •
I am not sure I like that fact that they refer to sexual abilities be less affected in women with SCI than men. In my opinion it is a tad sexist and biased. Aside from that this article contains some information that would be helpful to be aware of going into to working with clients with SCI.
