This is JANs website (The Job Accommodation Network). The accommodation information by Disability: A to Z provides a list of impairments and allows you to click on the one you are interested in. It then provides information of what types of work accommodations may need to be implemented and resources to find equipment.

This website provides a lot of information about the types of treatment that are provided on an outpatient basis and from what I see is very OT related. It includes info on scar control and massage, pressure garments and how to put them on, therapeutic exercises including using the PNF technique, work hardening, common interventions, modalities, ADLs , and the different splints used and why they are used.

This is the pamphlet from Hamilton General Hospital that is given to their burn patients. It covers everything we discussed in class with Teri in easy to understand language and provides visual aids of the different levels of burns. It also talks about the role of OT, exercises, diet and nutrition, coping and recovery, ADLs, caring for the skin, and what the patient is to do once they return home. Good info!

This is a fact sheet provided by AOTA that describes the role of occupational therapy in palliative care. It describes how "depending on the stage of the disease process or terminal illness, clients may receive palliative care for months or even years". The information provided also lists OT interventions related to palliative care in the areas of ADLs, IADLs, rest and sleep, play, leisure and social participation, and interpersonal.

This website from the American College of Rheumatology provides fast facts re: appropriate exercises for those who suffer from arthritis. What exercises are helpful and safe, who should exercise and which exercises are best, when to exercise and how to get started. Good info to know and share with potential clients in the future

This is the website that our Phys Dys book provides regarding the ROM Dance Program. It incorporates medically recommended joint exercises and gentle movement and is used with clients with arthritis as well as other physical impairments as a warm up or cool down for more involved therapy. It appears you must be certified to teach the dance.

this website is a great resource for anything shoulder related. Dr. Luks, MD provides answers to frequently asked questions and provides pictures and short video explanations for a few. If you click on the shoulder & elbow hyperlink you can find related info on shoulder dislocations, labrum tears, and rotator cuff injuries

this webpages gives a general overview of body-powered vs. electric-powered UE prosthesis. Advantages and disadvantages, improvements, and types of terminal devices. There is some interesting information on the different types of hands and gives info re: an experimental hand being engineered by students at Rutgers University that can be controlled through human thought.

this is a patient education resources page for the American Society of Hand Therapists and provides great resources for clients and students such as us to learn more about the different conditions, common diagnoses, and frequently asked questions re: hand therapists and their treatments. each diagnoses has its own fact sheet.

this is a great website and has pics of different positions for having sex in a wheelchair. I thought it was very interesting and shows stick figure graphics on ways I would never think of but can be used when educating patients. It also has hyperlinks to topics such as body image, relationships, sexual violence and harassment for those with disabilities.

this was a good instructional video for taking a clients blood pressure. I found it interesting that the stethoscope actually has an off position that you need to be aware of, I did not realize that.

I learned about this cool, FREE app, at the TNOTA conference during our students presentation. You basically download it and it allows you to choose a vision impairment (from the list provided) and you can then experience how the client w/that particular vision impairment sees. You can scan your surroundings using your camera feature. It even allows you to control the severity of the symptoms. This tool is not only great for educating yourself, but can be an extremely beneficial tool when educating family members on what their loved one is experiencing on a daily basis.

CarFit is a community based program that sponsors events (as a collaborative effort between AOTA, AAA, and AARP) with the purpose of inspecting the older driver in their own vehicle. "trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure they "fit" their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety". It takes about 20 mins after which recommendations for adjustments and adaptations are provided. The website provides FAQs and videos with a lot of information pertaining to the older driver and driver safety. Those of you interested in driving rehab may be interested in participating in an event such as this as a COTA in the future.

this is a neat interactive tool that you can use with senior (or any age) clients to help educate them about what safety hazards to watch out for and avoid in their home. It is a fun, visual way to show and tell the client about what to look for in the different rooms (living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom) in order to reduce the risk of falling. Something different besides a checklist.

This AOTA article defines "restraint", provides information on the role of OT in regards to providing restraint reduction or elimination, and lists common environments where this type of intervention takes place. By assessing what client-centered modifications, as well as environmental modifications, can be made, occupational therapy looks for ways "around" the use of restraints in order to enhance the client's engagement and participation in meaningful occupations.

This is a tip sheet I discovered on the AOTA website.  It provides very useful tips for helping your older parent remain at home and age in place safely, as well as ways to approach the topic with them.  I really loved the idea of presenting home modifications as gifts. This tip sheet is of particular interest to me as my mother slowly descends into the world of Alzheimer's disease.

Although we discussed work space ergonomics, I came across this tip sheet for carrying a purse/backpack. These tips are not only useful for us as students, but are also good strategies to recommend to our future clients.
