New Device Makes Wheelchairs Obsolete - 0 views

  •
I'm not sure that I agree with the title of this video, but the TEK Robotic Mobilization Device is a major improvement, in many ways, over a wheelchair. This segment gives 4 reasons why the TEK Robotic demonstrates a major shift in thinking in mobility devices. Best of all, this device shows how an individual with SCI can both sit and stand during the day, and place himself in much more natural positions for social interaction.

Occupational therapy, engineering students create therapy devices for disabled | Penn S... - 1 views

  •
I found it cool that sometime we can make things for fellow students, not only patients. This engineering student worked on a device that would allow a student with low arm strength to lift their arm in class. It is designed to help them lift objects or even raise their hand to get the teachers attention.

Color Identifying Devices for individuals with vision impairments needing help with ADL... - 1 views

  •
I love the idea of this device! I had never heard of anything like it before so when I found this article I was amazed. The Color Identifier would help individulas who are blind perform ADLS, such as dressing, independenlty. It can identify the color of clothing by determining how much light is being reflected. The individual wouldn't have to worry about if their clothes matched or not, which could save them time and embarrassment if they cared about their personal appearance. It also seemed to have very simple instructions, which is a plus.

Mobility and Orthopedic Disabilities - 0 views

  •
This was written for college students with disabilities as a resource for instructors. It can be used for any age classroom. It covers the areas that are difficult to students with mobility issues or other disabilities and how to interact. A number of devices are listed that can be helpful. I really thought the list of injuries or diseases and their characteristics that will be of importance was great to include. A nice resource for the classroom.

My supervisor during last semester's fieldwork told me that she had seen people wait up to a year to obtain funding for devices they desperately needed to improve their quality of life. This was due mostly to red tape and hoops you must jump through to obtain these funds. I feel it is extremely important to familiarize ourselves with all of the available resources in order to expedite this process.

I thought this was a neat website. Kinda like a "Wal-Mart" for assistive technology. I think it's really important to know what is out there and how expensive things are so we can recommend to our future clients things that could help them.
