This paragraph seems a bit jumbled. Because it's the first text people read, it may be more beneficial to state something more general and audience-friendly. What is written here seems a bit technical to jump into right off the start. Or, instead of having it all in one paragraph, it could be split into bullet points for easier reading.
  •  local and other partners

'Local and others' seems very vague. Something like 'With the help of our local and global partners,' may be more straightforward. It almost seems like using 'others' could be misinterpreted for the reader to think that the company is hiding something about their partners.

Economical appeals to your logic as when making new decisions you usually decide what is the most cost effective way. You dont want to buy a new product if its going to cost more than what you already pay.
  • If you can smell fragrance on your clothes when you get them out of the dryer, you are using too much detergent
  • Overuse of laundry detergent is not only wasteful and expensive, but very harmful to our environment and our health.
    • anonymous

Logic as "using too much detergent is expensive", and emotion appeal as using too much is bad for the environment, and you using too much is the reason.
  • The Solution: A big step forward in removing harmful chemicals from your home, body and environment is going detergent-free. After washing a fabric a few times with SmartKlean, you can completely eliminate all traces of detergent. With SmartKlean there is no need for laundry detergents, fabric softeners or dryer sheets. Our laundry ball is designed to wash effectively, leave clothes soft and leave zero residues behind on clothes and linens.  For those with skin sensitivities or conditions such as eczema, SmartKlean is ideal. It is important to note that even the trusted eco-friendly, hypoallergenic laundry detergents may contain SLS and SLES and other harsh chemicals. In addition, many soaps found in grocery stores contain additives that can still cause skin irritations. Although there are safer alternatives such as true soap, the easiest to use and by far the most economic choice for cleaning laundry is the SmartKlean Laundry Ball.
    • anonymous

Because it lists in the previous paragraphs what is wrong with normal soaps, promoting this alternative option appeals to character as this company product must be good because it doesnt do all the harmful things that were listed before.
  • Then there’s eczema. Throughout the world, many people suffer from this condition. In the US over one billion dollars a year is spent trying to fight its effects. Sadly, many of these are children. 90% of eczema sufferers experience symptoms before they reach the age of 5. A common type of eczema, ‘irritant contact dermatitis’, develops after frequent exposure to a mild irritants such as detergent.
    • anonymous

appeals to logic by telling you facts about a problem that is caused by too much irritants
  • The Problem: Regular laundry detergents leave residue in your clothes and linens each time they are washed. It is easy to verify this by smelling them. After eight washes, two percent of a garment’s weight comes from detergent residue. For people with skin sensitivities, this residue can not only cause severe skin irritations, but can also cause fabric to stiffen when it dries. Because of this, fabric softener is used to lubricate the fibers in order to make the fabric move freely again. Although it takes care of the itchy, stiff fabric, it only adds to the pile of chemical residues.
    • anonymous

appeals to logic, as it gives you examples of what you have experienced at home. also appeals to emotion as you are becoming aware of the true cause and harmful effect of what you experience in laundry
  • “It really works! I have been using mine for about a month now and it gets the laundry clean and fresh smelling without any added detergent

This is pathos because people passing away due to cancer diagnosis is very emotional.
  • Physicians and researchers who specialize in the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer are called oncologists.
    • farouk hamood

This is ethos because people listen to the physicians and researchers because of the label they have made for themselves.
  • Cancer is ultimately the result of cells that uncontrollably grow and do not die. Normal cells in the body follow an orderly path of growth, division, and death. Programmed cell death is called apoptosis, and when this process breaks down, cancer begins to form. Unlike regular cells, cancer cells do not experience programmatic death and instead continue to grow and divide. This leads to a mass of abnormal cells that grows out of control.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it depends on rationality, reason and proof.
  • Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth. There are over 100 different types of cancer, and each is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because its is purely based on logic.
  • Cancer harms the body when damaged cells divide uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors (except in the case of leukemia where cancer prohibits normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream). Tumors can grow and interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, and they can release hormones that alter body function. Tumors that stay in one spot and demonstrate limited growth are generally considered to be benign.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it can persuade people logically.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it is logical, and it is showing people through a video what cancer is.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it is a logical form of showing people what cancer is through a video.
  • A short, 3D, animated introduction to cancer. This was originally created by BioDigital Systems and used in the Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon.
  • Cells can experience uncontrolled growth if there are damages or mutations to DNA, and therefore, damage to the genes involved in cell division. Four key types of gene are responsible for the cell division process: oncogenes tell cells when to divide, tumor suppressor genes tell cells when not to divide, suicide genes control apoptosis and tell the cell to kill itself if something goes wrong, and DNA-repair genes instruct a cell to repair damaged DNA. Cancer occurs when a cell's gene mutations make the cell unable to correct DNA damage and unable to commit suicide. Similarly, cancer is a result of mutations that inhibit oncogene and tumor suppressor gene function, leading to uncontrollable cell growth.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it explains the growth of cancer and how it spreads.
  • Carcinogens are a class of substances that are directly responsible for damaging DNA, promoting or aiding cancer. Tobacco, asbestos, arsenic, radiation such as gamma and x-rays, the sun, and compounds in car exhaust fumes are all examples of carcinogens. When our bodies are exposed to carcinogens, free radicals are formed that try to steal electrons from other molecules in the body. Theses free radicals damage cells and affect their ability to function normally.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it tells what promotes cancer in an understanding and logical way.
  • Cancer treatment depends on the type of cancer, the stage of the cancer (how much it has spread), age, health status, and additional personal characteristics. There is no single treatment for cancer, and patients often receive a combination of therapies and palliative care. Treatments usually fall into one of the following categories: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, or gene therapy.
    • farouk hamood

This is pathos because being treated through cancer is a very emotional experience for people that have to go through it.
  • Surgery is the oldest known treatment for cancer. If a cancer has not metastasized, it is possible to completely cure a patient by surgically removing the cancer from the body. This is often seen in the removal of the prostate or a breast or testicle. After the disease has spread, however, it is nearly impossible to remove all of the cancer cells. Surgery may also be instrumental in helping to control symptoms such as bowel obstruction or spinal cord compression.
    • farouk hamood

This is pathos because for a cancer patient to go through surgery, it takes tons out of them.
  • Radiation treatment, also known as radiotherapy, destroys cancer by focusing high-energy rays on the cancer cells. This causes damage to the molecules that make up the cancer cells and leads them to commit suicide. Radiotherapy utilizes high-energy gamma-rays that are emitted from metals such as radium or high-energy x-rays that are created in a special machine. Early radiation treatments caused severe side-effects because the energy beams would damage normal, healthy tissue, but technologies have improved so that beams can be more accurately targeted. Radiotherapy is used as a standalone treatment to shrink a tumor or destroy cancer cells (including those associated with leukemia and lymphoma), and it is also used in combination with other cancer treatments.
    • farouk hamood

This is pathos because going through radiation takes a lot out of anyone.
  • As cancer cells use the body's energy and interfere with normal hormone function, it is possible to present symptoms such as fever, fatigue, excessive sweating, anemia, and unexplained weight loss. However, these symptoms are common in several other maladies as well. For example, coughing and hoarseness can point to lung or throat cancer as well as several other conditions.
    • farouk hamood

This is pathos because the symptoms of cancer bring people down tons.
  • There are five broad groups that are used to classify cancer. Carcinomas are characterized by cells that cover internal and external parts of the body such as lung, breast, and colon cancer. Sarcomas are characterized by cells that are located in bone, cartilage, fat, connective tissue, muscle, and other supportive tissues. Lymphomas are cancers that begin in the lymph nodes and immune system tissues. Leukemias are cancers that begin in the bone marrow and often accumulate in the bloodstream. Adenomas are cancers that arise in the thyroid, the pituitary gland, the adrenal gland, and other glandular tissues.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it tells the facts about how cancer is classified.
  • Early detection of cancer can greatly improve the odds of successful treatment and survival. Physicians use information from symptoms and several other procedures to diagnose cancer. Imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, PET scans, and ultrasound scans are used regularly in order to detect where a tumor is located and what organs may be affected by it. Doctors may also conduct an endoscopy, which is a procedure that uses a thin tube with a camera and light at one end, to look for abnormalities inside the body. Extracting cancer cells and looking at them under a microscope is the only absolute way to diagnose cancer. This procedure is called a biopsy. Other types of molecular diagnostic tests are frequently employed as well. Physicians will analyze your body's sugars, fats, proteins, and DNA at the molecular level. For example, cancerous prostate cells release a higher level of a chemical called PSA (prostate-specific antigen) into the bloodstream that can be detected by a blood test. Molecular diagnostics, biopsies, and imaging techniques are all used together to diagnose cancer.
    • farouk hamood

This is ethos because the information is clearly stated by a reliable source from the way they have put it.
  • Cancers that are closely linked to certain behaviors are the easiest to prevent. For example, choosing not to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol significantly lower the risk of several types of cancer - most notably lung, throat, mouth, and liver cancer. Even if you are a current tobacco user, quitting can still greatly reduce your chances of getting cancer. Skin cancer can be prevented by staying in the shade, protecting yourself with a hat and shirt when in the sun, and using sunscreen. Diet is also an important part of cancer prevention since what we eat has been linked to the disease. Physicians recommend diets that are low in fat and rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Certain vaccinations have been associated with the prevention of some cancers. For example, many women receive a vaccination for the human papillomavirus because of the virus's relationship with cervical cancer. Hepatitis B vaccines prevent the hepatitis B virus, which can cause liver cancer. Some cancer prevention is based on systematic screening in order to detect small irregularities or tumors as early as possible even if there are no clear symptoms present. Breast self-examination, mammograms, testicular self-examination, and Pap smears are common screening methods for various cancers.
    • farouk hamood

This is logos because it is logical.
    • farouk hamood

Appeal to pathos: Speaking about the benefits for future generations gives a warm, positive feeling to the reater.
  • Peace River Coal endeavors to minimize negative operational impacts on the surrounding ecology and terrain, affecting not only our present, but the future for generations to come
    • trehbein

Although this sentence is intended to show company responsibility, it could backfire by creating the thought in the reader's mind that the mine processes are damaging to the environment. The use of 'affecting not only our present, but the future for generations to come' is intended to refer to the company's attention to minimizing impacts, but it could easily be interpreted to the negative effects themselves affecting generations for years to come. You could present the information in a more positive instead of a negative light, by saying what the company is doing to minimize operational impacts, without saying that the impacts are negative, and without pairing it directly with the thought that future generations are involved.

  • At Peace River Coal Safety is Paramount
    • trehbein

Could be made more readable, such as: At Peace River Coal, Safety Is Paramount.' By putting a comma in, and ending with a period, it might make a bolder, more thought-out looking statement.

Should not be a comma after 'same', as it isn't really a listable descriptive term as used here.

  • Ensure that all of our operations have fundamentally safe, well designed plant, equipment and infrastructure
    • trehbein

The grammar here isn't quite correct. It's difficult to read 'All of our operations have... well designed plant,..'
  • Compliance with legislative and other requirements placed upon us, including those to which we voluntarily subscribe, is fundamental to the way we do business.
    • trehbein

This is a long and potentially confusing sentence that could be re-worded for readability.

'Rescue Team' should possibly all be capitalized, or be all lower-case, unless the team is just called 'Rescue'.
  • On September 18, 2009 Peace River Coal celebrated achieving the milestone of One-year Lost Time Injury Free operation.
    • trehbein

Again, could be re-worded, to something such as "...Peace River Coal operation celebrated the achievement of One-year Lost Time Injury Free." Or, "..celebrated achieving the 'One-Year Lost Time Injury Free' milestone.

Ethos: Exemplifying this proud moment causes the reader to see more respectability in the company. This is not exactly using the company's pre-existing reputation to make a point believable, but it is making a believable point about how the company should be respected by using examples that appeal to the reader's view of the company overall.
  • We recognize that our strength as a company resides in the men and women who contribute to our business.
    • trehbein

Logos: The logical statement here implies that happy, healthy workers contribute more strength to the company itself than unhappy, injured ones, so this statement clearly states that it's in the best interests of the company to keep everyone safe. This is something that the reader can take and agree with at face value because it's an honest, logical statement.

There are different sorts of appeal; what kind is blue likely to evoke? What sort of appeal is this (logos, ethos, pathos)?
    • Japjot Singh

Blue color is likely to evoke the emotional approach of the reader. So, i would say it pathos

The website uses various links at the bottom of the first page, so that viewer can get a better understand of the website. It also provides the company's contact details at the top right and bottom of the page, making it really easy for someone who wants to quickly look at some important data and then contact the company for more detailed information.

What do you mean by 'impression'?
    • Japjot Singh

By " Impression", I mean to say that the website impresses the viewer by providing almost all the required information under six main outlines on the front page. These "Drop down" boxes give an impression of a good website.

Detox campaign | Greenpeace International - 2 views

  • Many hazardous chemicals can also be transported in our oceans, atmosphere and food chains and accumulate in places far away from their original source. They have been found to build up in the bodies of animals including birds, fish, whales, polar bears and even human breast milk. The problem and the solution are therefore not only a cause of local concern. This is a truly global issue.
    • Sabina Donnelly

Again, this is aimed at readers who are far away from where this problem is occurring. It brings the issue close to home and hopefully motivates the reader to action

  • Of these brand owners, one group stood out in particular as the most likely champions of a toxic-free future - the world’s largest sports brands. Not only are these brands self-proclaimed leaders and innovators, but they have the size and influence to work with their suppliers to begin bringing about real change on the ground and eliminate the use and release of these hazardous chemicals.

This photo and its caption have a lot of impact on the reader. The caption describes discoloured water which can be seen in the collector's sample bottle. Futhermore, the photo shows an odd yellow sludge/waste coming out for the pipe. In the background of the photo, you can see the turbid river water and smoggy air. What is particularily effective is the use of hyperbole. The odd looking sludge is the largest and central object in the photo, dwarfing the person standing next to it.

Photo # 11 in the slide is particularily effective because the subject of the photo is covering his mouth and nose with his hand while looking down at the discoloured redish purple water coming out of the discharge pipe. When we read the caption, we find that he is doing this due to the terrible stench of the water. Both the caption and the subject's reaction in the photo make the experience more real for the reader as we can imagine the experience as if we were there.
