Pathfinder Parent Center has put a twist on the 2013 Pathfinder Parent Center Parent Involvement Conference by partnering up with DPI's Secondary Transition conference to get the 2013 Secondary Transition Parent Involvement Conference. What:
Easter Seals-Goodwill is offering a series of classes using Michelle Garcia Winner's "Think Social!" curriculum to help kids ages 9-14 who need extra support in learning and practicing social skills. Group leaders include people with backgrounds in P.L.A.Y. (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters), social work, special education, and one-on-one work with kids of ranging abilities. Our goal is to provide a safe and fun environment for kids to explore and learn about our social world together!

What:
NICHD is recruiting volunteers for the national Safe to Sleep Champions Initiative, which engages physicians and other health care professionals, parents, grandparents and other family members, caregivers, and community stakeholders to serve as spokespersons for the Safe to Sleep campaign. The Safe to Sleep campaign not only addresses ways to reduce the risk of SIDS, but also ways to reduce the risk of other sleep-related causes of infant death, such as suffocation or strangulation. The goal of the Safe to Sleep Champions Initiative is to share the campaign messages about safe infant sleep practices through the use of media and community outreach efforts. The NICHD will host training webinars to equip participants with the information to serve as Champions in their local communities. To volunteer as a Safe to Sleep Champion, you must participate in one of the webinars.

Click here to download the full brochure for this event (PDF) What is Parents Advocating for Kids (PAK): The purpose of Montana PAK is to develop a monthly forum for parents to collaborate and receive information about special education advocacy and the federal/state laws that protect their children. In addition, PAK aims to provide a public medium to discuss educational concerns and to raise awareness about the scope of services, as well as local resources, which are available for children. The meeting is open and free to the public. The two hours will be divided into portions dedicated to open discussion and a presentation on legal rights in special education. RSVPs are not required to attend the meeting, but mandatory if child care is needed. Who are PAK Meetings for: Parents, guardians or family members of a child who is receiving special education services; Parents of a child who is struggling in school due to behavioral or emotional issues or who just seems to have a hard time learning; Parents, guardians or family members who suspect their child might have a learning disability or other condition that is causing him or her to have difficulty in school; Parents, guardians or family members who wish to improve their understanding of special education so they may better advocate at IEP meetings. Stepping into the tension between what it takes to support people in community jobs and delivering typical day services can be daunting. Working together to explore why employment is a priority in supporting adults with developmental disabilities to have meaningful lives, and how the current day support system can move forward in increasing employment outcomes for people with developmental disabilities in Montana. We will revisit fundamental aspects of the disability system related to employment to illustrate how we've arrived at the system challenges we have in 2012. RESA4U and Region IV CSPD are partnering to present a Region IV Summer Institute. Registration for the three-day Institute is $100 per person and housing is available at the UM-Western campus dormitories. Judy Wood, author of Teaching the Hard to Reach, will be the keynote speaker for Monday, June 11th. Judy focuses on building a successful intervention system for at-risk students or students with unique needs within general education settings. On Tuesday, June 12 and Wednesday, June 13, educators will be able to choose from a variety of course offerings designed to enhance classroom instruction. One post-baccalaureate credit is available for attending the conference for three days. A second credit, requiring extended study, will be offered as well. The cost for each credit is $115 and is paid directly to UM-Western. These credits can be used for certificate renewal through OPI; participants would need to check with their school districts for approval regarding PIR or lane changes. When:

This group is designed for parents who are dealing with specific challenges usually encountered once their adoptees are settled in (~ 1 year or more into the adoption), for parents with challenging children and interested others. CONNECT (formerly Together in Parenting) is a process-based support group lead by a licensed therapist that gives parents a venue in which to form an emotional connection with other parents experiencing similar issues with their children. Each month, we address concerns of parents who are present via peer support and therapeutic suggestions. Parents who are experiencing challenging times with their children find the support of other parents who have been on the adoption and parenting journey for some time to be invaluable. Child care will be available if this is determined to be a need of the group. When:

The Montana School for the Deaf and Blind Outreach Program Sign Language Series is designed to provide instruction and information to families, teachers, and others closely associated with a child or youth who is deaf or hard of hearing using sign language as one mode of communication. The intent of this sign language series is to provide ongoing instruction periodically throughout the school year in response to the needs of its participants. The Games for the Visually Impaired is held each spring at the Montana School for the Deaf & Blind campus in Great Falls. Athletes from around the state compete in track and field, gymnastics, gym activities, swimming and bowling. This is a competitive event for blind and low vision students ranging in age from 3-21. The VI Games is an uplifting and confidence-boosting weekend for participants, and the MSDB staff provides lots of support for the kids. Personnel from Malmstrom Air Force Base assist athletes in their individual events. Volunteers are willing to swim and run with athletes. Any student with a visual impairment is welcome to participate in the event. When/Where:

Supporting all Kids to Become Cool Kids: A Schoolwide Approach * June 11, 2012

Participants will be introduced to system wide approaches and practices to promote appropriate student behavior, teach social competence and establish consistent reactions to instances of unacceptable student behavior. When all staff consistently use an effective school wide approach, overall student behavior improves, time available for teaching and learning increases and the climate of the school community becomes more supportive and safe for both students and educators. Imagine that someone who is only familiar with PCs suddenly comes across an Apple Mac computer for the first time. The interface would look different, programs that person had on disk would not load - because they were designed for a PC. So the computer goes back to the shop with the complaint that it is broken. That, essentially, is what we do with our dyslexic learners. Parents and teens who have attended this seminar have seen results in their teens' self esteem and confidence. Teachers appreciate the information and resources they can use on their own.  Leave with the understanding that dyslexic thinkers are among the brightest in our society; what's more, with the right approach, the dyslexic thinking style contains all the ingredients for academic success.
