The Montana School for the Deaf and Blind Outreach Program Sign Language Series is designed to provide instruction and information to families, teachers, and others closely associated with a child or youth who is deaf or hard of hearing using sign language as one mode of communication. The intent of this sign language series is to provide ongoing instruction periodically throughout the school year in response to the needs of its participants. This program embraces the efforts of all individuals wanting to use sign language to communicate with their children or students. When:

ASL for beginners with opportunities for more experienced signers to improve their signing to make it more expressive. This class will be an introduction to the basic skills in production and comprehension of American Sign Language (ASL), including the manual alphabet and numbers.  Instruction will include developing conversational ability, culturally appropriate behaviors and exposure to ASL grammar. Resources for continuing to improve sign language skills will be provided.

What: 
Speakers use several different communication techniques to help their listeners follow the logic of the discourse (conversation, teaching, etc.), as well as to hone in on key points of the discussion. Like all languages, American Sign Language speakers (and interpreters) use strategies to assist with listener comprehension. In the literature these are frequently referred to as 'expansion features' (Lawrence, Finton, Smith, etc.). The goal of the training will introduce you to the types of expansions that can be used, as well as when to integrate expansions into your educational interpretations. When:

What: 
Sign language users utilize fingerspelling for multiple purposes; interpreters need to be able to decode fingerspelling and have strategies for coping when the term cannot be decoded. In much the same way nonmanual information conveys information that adds to, or changes the meaning or intent of a term or statement. The goal of the training is to introduce interpreters to strategies and coping techniques that will enhance your receptive skills and, ultimately, improve your ability to deliver a more effective spoken English interpretation. What:
The signing exact english skillshops are for teachers, aides, parents, and others who use Signing Exact English and wish to improve their vocabulary, fluency, and expressive and receptive abilities. Participants review S.E.E. vocabulary and do extensive work on additional signs, visual features of sign language, song and story telling techniques.
The educational interpreting skillshops are for persons employed in elementary and secondary schools as educational interpreters, using any form of Signed English. Work is done on vocabulary expansion, fluency, fingerspelling, and expressiveness, practicing to a variety of timed tapes. Problem solving, discussion of interpreting ethics in the educational setting and how-do-you handle sessions also included.

This workshop will be an extension of our previous classifier workshops. We will explore new and different ways of using classifiers and spatial techniques to ensure that your signed interpretations are clear and that the information is conveyed in an effective manner. What:
The Montana Office of Public Instruction is happy to announce that a series of DVD Video Conferences and other interpreter training materials from Boys Town and Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) are now available to be checked-out by interpreters, teachers of the deaf and other people with interest in the education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

How to borrow the DVDs:
The OPI library loans materials to other libraries and not to individual borrowers. To borrow the DVDs, please contact your local school or public library to request any of the titles below. The EIPA Video Conference series will be circulated as a set (4 DVDs) for each year. The interpreting series (2 DVDs) will be cataloged as elementary and secondary. Because OPI will be granting renewal credits and needs verification of circulation, the Resource Center will send a letter on OPI letterhead to the borrowing library with the DVD(s) verifying the DVD title(s) was checked out. The borrowing library will fill in the patron's name and give the letter to the patron with the loaned DVD(s). It will be the patron's responsibility to present the letter to OPI for Renewal Units (CEUs). The videos will be loaned on a "first-come, first-served" basis for a period of 2 weeks. Renewals after the two-week period will be granted if there is no waiting list.

What:
This broadcast will incorporate the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Learn the Signs. Act Early. (LTSAE) messages as well as NYS specific resources to increase awareness about LTSAE and importance of understanding developmental milestones and making appropriate and timely referrals when there is a concern. The broadcast will also highlight resources in New York State. Parents and professionals tend to frame healthy development of children in terms of height, weight, and language acquisition. Despite the fact that the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended universal screening for development and for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) since 2006, the majority of children are not being screened by standardized screening tools. In addition to screening, when a concern is raised, parents and professionals are not aware of the importance of early intervention or the availability of resources. The broadcast will highlight information about ASD and general developmental screening, including many free resources available for parents to better understand their child's development through the age of five years old, as well as materials to help parents talk with their child's health care provider about any concerns. For professionals, the broadcast will highlight the importance of routine developmental screening and resources for them and parents with whom they work. Learning Objectives
After viewing this program viewers will be able to: List important developmental milestones in early childhood (before the age of three). Explain the importance of using standardized developmental screening tests at routine well-child visits at 9, 18, and 24 months of age.</l

Educational Interpreters encounter dilemmas in the K-12 setting that must be handled in a manner appropriate to this unique work environment.  Interpreters working with students in the educational setting face unique challenges and must keep in mind that they are working with developing children and youth. Are you unsure of your role and responsibilities in the K-12 setting? What is your role as a member of the Educational Team? What information is confidential and what can you share with others? Join us for this training where we will explore these types of ethical dilemmas. Participants will be given an overview of the Code of Conduct and will examine a series of scenarios to determine the best way to handle situations based on the values and guidelines outlined.
