The 15th Annual COPAA Conference in Albuquerque, NM, March 7-10th is your best opportunity for training and networking with the most experienced and knowledgeable special education advocates and attorneys on special education issues. The Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) is an independent, nonprofit membership organization of special education attorneys, special education advocates, related professionals, and parents/family members. Disseminating knowledge of protections under the law, advocacy strategy, and educational best practice is an important part of leveling the playing field and enabling parents to meaningfully participate in their child's educational programs. The 2013 Conference Committee is now accepting proposals to present a breakout session as part of the conference. Breakout sessions are 1 hour and 15 min in length and are held on Saturday, March 9th and Sunday, March 10th. (Note: Attorneys who represent education agencies and current employees of education agencies who receive greater than 50% of income from school district are not eligible to attend the conference or submit proposals.) The 2013 Montana State Literacy Conference entitled Casting a Line for Literacy. Our 2013 keynote speakers are a featured part of what promises to be an amazing conference. This year's line up of speakers share a passion for literacy across the curriculum, and across grade and ability levels. In addition to the keynote speakers, the Conference will offer an abundance of brilliant presenters who will be offering sessions ranging from ways to hook kids and families on reading to obtaining and using technology, from Response to Interventions at all grade levels to embracing and integrating Common Core State Standards.

As a conference guest, you will not only have the advantage of being offered several sessions on dyslexia at the conference, you will be the recipient of a complimentary ticket to An Evening with Henry Winkler. Henry's presentation at the Alberta Bair will be followed by a Question and Answer session and a book signing.

What:
The Montana Office of Public Instruction is happy to announce that a series of DVD Video Conferences and other interpreter training materials from Boys Town and Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) are now available to be checked-out by interpreters, teachers of the deaf and other people with interest in the education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

How to borrow the DVDs:
The OPI library loans materials to other libraries and not to individual borrowers. To borrow the DVDs, please contact your local school or public library to request any of the titles below. The EIPA Video Conference series will be circulated as a set (4 DVDs) for each year. The interpreting series (2 DVDs) will be cataloged as elementary and secondary. Because OPI will be granting renewal credits and needs verification of circulation, the Resource Center will send a letter on OPI letterhead to the borrowing library with the DVD(s) verifying the DVD title(s) was checked out. The borrowing library will fill in the patron's name and give the letter to the patron with the loaned DVD(s). It will be the patron's responsibility to present the letter to OPI for Renewal Units (CEUs). The videos will be loaned on a "first-come, first-served" basis for a period of 2 weeks. Renewals after the two-week period will be granted if there is no waiting list.

The Theme this year is: Special Education in the 21st Century: Tools for the Future If you are interested in presenting at this conference, visit http://www.mtcec.org/conference Click here to download the Scholarship Application (PDF) A limited number of scholarships are available on a first come, first serve basis for residents of Region IV consisting of the following counties:  Park, Gallatin, Meagher, Broadwater, Lewis and Clark, Jefferson, Madison, Powell, Granite, Silverbow and Beaverhead Scholarships are available to use for registration costs up to $400.00 per school/organization. Scholarships will be awarded to teams attending one of the listed conferences. In the spirit of discovery, the annual Montana Youth Transitions (MYT) Conference will seek to answer important questions about the challenging journey into adulthood for Montana's youth with disabilities. It will be an opportunity for students, parents, teachers, vocational rehabilitation counselors, case managers and others to network, explore resources, and discover pathways to meaningful futures! During the conference, there will be a Real Life Fair with vendors representing education, independent living, recreation, employment, and other supportive services.
Presenters will include well known keynotes as well as Montanans who have themselves gone through the transition process and can offer insight, guidance and support. A youth track will also be provided to start youth on their own individualized transition journey. When:

Each year the National Native American Parent Center presents an annual conference for Native American family members, tribal leaders, health professionals, mental health professionals, tribal, public school professionals, and others who are interested in ensuring the special education needs for Native American students who are ages 0 - 26.

Workshops focus on strategies and methods to increase outcomes for Native American students with disabilities, and increase parent involvement in the special education process. We offer information on best practices working with Native American students with disabilities to produce successful educational outcomes. This conference will provide information on: successful strategies that promote collaborative relationships between tribes, schools, and families; successful methods in positive behavioral interventions, the latest research and data on effective classroom practices and strategies for Native American students.

Conference Goals: Families will gain skills to increase their ability to advocate for their child in the special education process. Families will learn stress reduction techniques. A Note from Vicki S. Dohrmann: Our planning committee has been working hard at planning the annual Special Education Conference. We are pleased to announce our 2012 conference faculty and full-day course schedule.  We are bringing specialists from all over the U.S. to present current research and evidence-based interventions.  The conference is scheduled for March 7-9, 2012 (Wednesday-Friday) at the Shoreline Conference Center. We are asking local businesses interested in supporting special education to donate directly to schools to support staff development for special education teachers, therapists and support personnel.   If you have an intern or parent that may be interested in volunteering at the conference, please ask them to contact me at vickid@seanet.com; we currently have volunteer positions available for all courses.  If you have an active parent-teacher organization at your school, please share this information with them.  We appreciate your support in helping us "get the word out" about the annual conference.
