What:
The 2013 Montana State Literacy Conference entitled Casting a Line for Literacy.  Our 2013 keynote speakers are a featured part of what promises to be an amazing conference. This year's line up of speakers share a passion for literacy across the curriculum, and across grade and ability levels. In addition to the keynote speakers, the Conference will offer an abundance of brilliant presenters who will be offering sessions ranging from ways to hook kids and families on reading to obtaining and using technology, from Response to Interventions at all grade levels to embracing and integrating Common Core State Standards.

As a conference guest, you will not only have the advantage of being offered several sessions on dyslexia at the conference, you will be the recipient of a complimentary ticket to An Evening with Henry Winkler. Henry's presentation at the Alberta Bair will be followed by a Question and Answer session and a book signing.

What: 
Speakers use several different communication techniques to help their listeners follow the logic of the discourse (conversation, teaching, etc.), as well as to hone in on key points of the discussion. Like all languages, American Sign Language speakers (and interpreters) use strategies to assist with listener comprehension. In the literature these are frequently referred to as 'expansion features' (Lawrence, Finton, Smith, etc.). The goal of the training will introduce you to the types of expansions that can be used, as well as when to integrate expansions into your educational interpretations. When:

Websites can be created for a personal digital portfolio, a classroom, or a business. Participants will learn how to use many Google tools such as calendar, documents, presentation, and forms and how to incorporate them into a workable website. What:
Marissa Clark, Genetic Counselor at Shodair Hospital, will be presenting on a variety of topics that are commonly seen in genetics clinic as it relates to educational needs and support. The focus of the presentation will primarily be on fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol effects (FAE); however, less common genetic syndromes such as: neurofibromatosis, elhers-danlos syndrome, fragile X, and chromosomal microdeletion/micoduplication disorders will be covered. In addition to the etiology of the genetic syndromes, helpful educational techniques and resources will be addressed, as well as the signs and symptoms that educators should be aware of. There will be ample time for a question and answer session that can address individual cases and situations.

Sibshops is an opportunity for brothers and sisters (ages 6-12) of children with a disability or special health need to enjoy friendship, activities and learning together. This Sibshop is focused on exploring feelings. Activities include swimming, a guest speaker, and sibtree. Lunch is provided. For swimming activity, bring your own swimsuit (changing rooms available) and towel. Flotation devices provided, but participants may also bring their own. Children will be grouped according to swimming skills and all groups will be supervised. When:

What:
The first presentation will feature Nic Dibble from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction who will share how Wisconsin is building on existing mental health initiatives to use a Response to Intervention (RtI) framework to help schools support students affected by trauma. Resources that will be shared include Wisconsin's toolkit for schools, links to publications and websites that describe how schools can become more trauma-informed, and specific strategies schools can adopt to be more trauma-sensitive. The second presentation will feature Erin Butts from the University of Montana Institute for Educational Research and Service who will discuss secondary traumatic stress (STS), burnout, and self-care. She will identify STS signs and symptoms, discuss their significance, and provide recommendations for self-care. Her presentation will include an interactive exercise that can be used during stressful situations.

We have created two forms for folks to submit questions, and to sign up to receive notice of future calls. This month's Grandparents (or relative) Raising Grandchildren Support Group meeting features a guest speaker from the Yellowstone Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA). CASA is a group of community volunteers who speak up for abused and neglected children in Yellowstone County. The CASA concept is based on the commitment that every child deserves a safe, permanent home. CASA volunteers are appointed by the courts to gather accurate and complete information about a child's circumstances, serve as an advocate, and make objective recommendations in the best interest of the child. This is the last spring meeting for 2013, there will be a picnic potluck, and grandchildren are welcome. If you are able to bring dish contact the Extension office to confirm.
