Multimodal approaches to AAC intervention within naturalistic environments provide significant opportunities for cultivating intentionality and supporting language acquisition. This series of webinars will aid in gaining insight into utilization of symbols for teaching and shaping behaviors that function as meaningful and appropriate communication. Participants will learn strategies for employing symbols and technology to support the four main purposes of communication: expressing wants and needs, developing social closeness, exchanging information and fulfilling social routines. Course 1 - June 21, 2011 - Unleash the Power of Augmentative and Alternative Communication Your AAC users are not talking with their peers, use few communicative functions and are unmotivated to communicate. What can be done to nourish functional, generative communication? This course will address using a variety of technologies and strategies to stimulate use of meaningful and appropriate communication. Learner Outcomes: The participant will be able to identify the meaning of functional communication and the requisites for communication. The participant will be able to describe six strategies for supporting the development of communication skills using single message devices.     This intensive two-day training is designed to teach participants the theory behind the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and the protocols for how to appropriately implement the six phases of PECS. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is used to rapidly teach communication skills to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training. Training in PECS begins by teaching a spontaneous request and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. An added attraction for preschool children with autism and related disabilities is the high proportion of children who acquire independent speech. Participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, plus attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities, and/or limited communication skills.

    What:
    Cats and Kids is a new event this year for kids in the Bozeman community to get involved with the Bobcat Track and Field team. The event is a track meet for "tracksters with all abilities"! Children with any and all physical or mental disabilities are welcome to compete. Each competitor will be paired with a member of the bobcat team and the two will compete as a pair. The teamwork between the two people can be anywhere from the bobcat playing a coaches roll, to the two dividing up portions of the event. Creativity is on our side and I don't want anyone to be discouraged from any event.

  • President Obama has challenged us all to help “Win the Future” by out-educating, out-innovating, and out-building our competitors in the 21st century. President Obama believes the best ideas come from the American people. That’s why the White House started a series called “Champions of Change.” Each week, the White House selects 5-20 Americans, businesses, or organizations who are doing extraordinary things in their communities. This series highlights a different group each week ranging from educators to entrepreneurs to community activists. The Office of Public Engagement hosts a roundtable event here at the White House to honor those who are “Winning the Future” and empowering and inspiring other members of their respective communities.  Agency representatives and White House Policy Offices participate in the event and host a discussion on amplifying best practices learned in each area. Paired with each White House event, these “Champions” are featured on the White House website. The Champions of Change series is designed for people to look into their communities and nominate everyday heroes who are demonstrating commitment to improving their own communities, their country, or their fellow citizens. That is why the White House is looking for you to nominate someone as a “Champion of Change” who is doing extraordinary things to make a difference in your community. The White House will consider your nominations as they feature people who are bringing about change in their communities to share their ideas on how to win the future.     You'll be treated to great food, live music, safe and fun cycling, and great company. Riders that raise a minimum of $250 will receive a custom NAMI cycling jersey.     Families in Partnership Inc. is gearing up for the 6th annual Families in Partnership Early Childhood Fair (formerly The Prenatal to Five Fair). We are looking for community resources who might want to participate by entering to have a table with information and children's activities. The theme for the fair is "Plant a seed and watch it grow." The idea of the early childhood fair is to provide community resources, in one location, at one time, at no cost. The fair is met to be fun, but informational and connect young families to needed community resources. A few of the many opportunities available at the fair are a kids zumba class (MAC), Libby Fire Department puppet show, Frontier Communications kids fingerprint kits, Quasadillas by Rosita's, face painting and more. There are no fees for having a table at the fair, but we require that you do not sell anything at your table; rather, offer free information and children's activities. When:

Social Inclusion in Action: Innovative Community Programs - Webinar - May 9, 2011 - 0 views

  • Click here to register for this event What: Social inclusion occurs when individuals and entire communities of people have access to rights, opportunities, and resources that are usually available to members of American society. People with mental health and substance use problems are more  likely to fully recover and rebuild their lives when they have access not only to care and services, but also to social, economic, educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities that most citizens take for granted.  A socially inclusive society also provides opportunities for individuals in recovery to contribute to their communities as peers, employees, parents, residents, students, volunteers, teachers, and active citizens. Social inclusion provides a policy framework to make this vision a reality.  The SAMHSA ADS Center invites you to a FREE teleconference training to learn about three innovative community programs that are improving lives, changing communities, and transforming systems through social inclusion practices. The training will highlight the promising practices of the 2010 Campaign for Social Inclusion Award recipients, including:  SC SHARE’s Dream Team, which is reaching thousands of young people throughout South Carolina through partnerships with key government, faith, and community leaders. The Dream Team uses lived experience to show that there is hope; that a full, productive life can be the expectation; and that recovery is possible.  Heartland Consumer Network’s Poetry for Personal Power, which is changing lives and influencing educational systems by bringing open mic spoken poetry competitions to colleges throughout Missouri. This program is offering young people with mental health and substance use problems the chance to use personal experience and creativity to inspire others.     Advocacy Unlimited, Inc., which developed a 30-minute documentary titled Shining Stars – Young Adults in Recovery to give a voice to young people with mental health and substance use problems who teach about what recovery looks like and the important role all of us play in supporting each other. This program will be featured during a public viewing of the documentary in June at the State Legislative Office Building in Connecticut.    These SAMHSA-supported community-based efforts will demonstrate how social inclusion programs improve lives, communities, and systems.     What:
    This event is organized through the school PTAs/PACs, so you hopefully have already heard about it through your child's school. In case you hadn't, I wanted to make sure you know about it. Anderson school, on Cottonwood, where our children attend, has participated all 5 years, and it's a great event! These families have been  incredibly generous, donating clean, gently-used clothing, shoes, hats, etc. of all sizes, infant through adult. Volunteers are also always needed to help sort, hang, and organize the donations during set up.  Any time you have to volunteer, short or long, will be greatly appreciated.  If you come on Tuesday or Thursday over the lunch hour, the Tumbleweed Gourmet Food truck will be there selling  volunteers their gourmet tacos and burritos. If you are able to help anytime next week for 2 hours, you can take a brown paper grocery sack of treasures for yourself! This free clothing giveaway is a fantastic opportunity to reuse and recycle gently worn clothing collected by Bozeman area schools. This event is not based on "need," but on "sharing" what we have as a community.     Social Communication Skills are vital to school and life success. There is compelling evidence that all children can benefit from direct instruction in specific social communication skills. This presentation describes the developmental sequences of social communication skills along with effective instructional methods that teach children expected behaviors and give them "words" they can use to interact in socially appropriate ways. Strategies that provide opportunities to model, reinforce and re-teach these important skills will be described and practiced.
