SIPX: Digital Course Materials, the Way You Want - 3 views

    I really cannot recommend this resource highly enough. The brainchild and master's thesis of a lawyer-turned-information professional, SIPX is an incredible blend of copyright control centre, digital distribution hub, and online marketplace. With the impending downfall of Access Copyright and its rejection by most Canadian universities, schools have had to quickly learn about copyright and establish good practices and guidelines, but this product provides the safest legal protection while considerably upgrading the dissemination of course readings; it also makes strides that push against the dominance of the traditional textbook market. It has already been adopted by several major American universities, including Stanford (where it was developed; it seems all the greatest open knowledge stuff is coming out of there!) and Notre Dame. Did I mention that it even supports MOOCs? I just found out about this resource while doing a practicum placement for library school, and I can't believe that I'd never heard of it before. It's exactly the kind of integrated library and informational system that needs to happen in academic institutions, and while it's not explicitly modelled on open access, it relies on many of the same values that we've talked about throughout this course. Check it out!

    Thank you for sharing. The article highlight a real-life problem. I am sure in my country many faculty members and librarians of higher educational establishment are not aware of OER and therefore they prefer safe and sure textbooks. Librarians should be first to explore, understand and market this type of resources. At the same time time may be needed in order to change educational policy and choice of textbooks.

    Why it "works" Network Effect Wikipedia benefits tremendously from the network effect. The network effect is when a user of a product benefits more from a product if other people also use the product. Telephones are a textbook example. If only a few dozen consumers have telephones, then the telephones aren't very useful. But if millions of consumers have telephones, they become more useful since each telephone owner can contact many people. The large number of Wikipedia users benefits Wikipedia. First, the more editors there are, the the higher the accuracy and quality of the articles. Secondly, it gives an incentive to users to edit. Since editors know the each article will be read by thousands of users, the sheer influence of each article is a strong enough incentive to edit, even though Wikipedia is free. Openness Wikipedia is free and open for any user to edit, even anonymously. This means there is a very large number of editors. This helps Wikipedia ensure accuracy since each mistake and inaccuracy will have to get by hundreds of editors. With so many writers, the scope of Wikipedia articles is very large, minimizing the amount of missing information. Although the openness of Wikipedia provides a powerful self-correcting method, it also makes Wikipedia vulnerable to vandalism. In addition, editors are anonymous and may have a conflict of interest, or might have inadequate knowledge of the article's subject. Yet, because Wikipedia is open to any edits, it is also likely to be corrected. It operates by a system of checks and balances from many editors. However, it has some guidelines to protect it against misinformation and bias: 1. Verifiability principle.     Good source, this actually has been practice for several years, almost all the publishers are engaging into digitized open publishing type, wherein the resource materials they are selling is actually publish electronically, so that buyers or interested clients may view it online; no need to go to their shop to ask what they are looking for.

Sin embargo, me parece que su enfoque adolece de varios problemas. El más notorio es que trata al mundo de las publicaciones como uno solo, cuando no hay forma de comparar las dinámicas, capitales (humanos, financieros y simbólicos) puestos en juego en la publicación académica (scholarly publishing) o en los libros de interés general (trade), guías turísticas, enciclopedias, libros religiosos, textos para niños, etc., para no mencionar la abismal distancia entre las revistas académicas (scholarly journals) y los libros o inclusivo las revistas generalistas (magazines).     I agree with the reflection of this article about the need for publishers to rethink their business models and forget the exclusive Gutenberian publishing model. However, I think his approach suffers from several limitations. The most notorious is treating the publishing world as one, when there is no way to compare the dynamics, capital (human, financial and symbolic) at stake in academic or scholarly publishing with books of general interest (trade), tour guides, encyclopedias, religious books, textbooks for children, etc., not to mention the abysmal gap between scholarly journals and books or inclusive commercial magazines. Conclude that things are going wonderfully well because a lot of companies, linked to the mass media (an important point in the argument, mentioned as if it were the most normal thing in the world) have successful ventures is to confuse the things. I also believe that using the mantra of the age of disruption for all contributes little to a seroius discussion (http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/06/23/the-disruption-machine?currentPage = all)

    Good read, Kevin! :) I agree with this article that said "As long as people want to be informed, entertained, and inspired, there will be profitable opportunities in publishing." The main key to keep the business running is everyone must adapt. Traditional publishers need to moves to digital media in order to survive and meet the modern readers' needs.

    when I take a book in my hands, I always start with smelling paper (old or new), can we do the same thing with technology?

    I do like physical book in my hand, but I find e-books more convenient either when I am writing my research paper or I want to read certain book right away. I heard that more and more universities are supporting e-book system, and getting rid of physical textbooks due to costs and other reasons. A lot more e-books will become useful in the future. I think paper books will exist, but it will be rare in the future.
