BCN Open Data Portal - 0 views

  •
The BCN Open Data Portal makes public the data generated by the Barcelona City Council, excluding those subject to privacy, property or security restrictions. Data are available to everyone in standard, open, digital formats, that are clearly structured and comprehensible. In my opinion, this is a valuable example of how governments at different levels (in this case the municipality, which is the level of government closest to the citizen), can make efforts to facilitate access to the great amount of data they collect and to encourage citizens to reuse them.

Open Education | OKFN:LOCAL India - 0 views

A local group of the open knowledge foundation 1. Push for Open Science and Research practices in Indian research institutions. . 2. More involvement of citizens in the spirit of Open Knowledge Involvement of the masses in order to work towards making ourselves a better managed nation. Constitutional instruments like the Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Right To Information (RTI), etc., lose their relevance without complete transparency in the dissemination of government as well as non-government data. Building a mass-based system of knowledge-banks can help us a lot in achieving our goal. We can assist the governments for making more information public, wherever necessary. 3. Push for education. Involving the masses can to a great extent result in a quicker transformation of the present scene (for example, we can have citizens making study material open and free and also involve them more in the dispersion of education). We aim to arrange for vocational profession-based education for the adult population.

What Happens to #Ferguson Affects Ferguson: Net Neutrality, Algorithmic Filtering and F... - 4 views

  •
Links between citizen journalism, social media, "real" media coverage and the sociopolitic aspects of algorithms and filtering in relation to the recent situation in Ferguson, USA: "But keep in mind, Ferguson is also a net neutrality issue. It's also an algorithmic filtering issue. How the internet is run, governed and filtered is a human rights issue."
  •
Ferguson es también un claro ejemplo de por qué la neutralidad de la red es una cuestión de derechos humanos; un problema de la libertad de expresión; y un problema de los sin voz se escucha, en sus propios términos.

A list of citizen science projects, apps & tools - 8 views

  •
I have gathered a large list of on-going citizen science projects and related tools which, I am sure, will benefit everybody interested in getting involved with hands-on science. Some of the projects in my list were mentioned in Clarkes' video lecture - I realize that some people were looking for references to those.

Hello! You have done a great job, very impressive. A couple of weeks ago I suggested and made a google spreadsheet in which everyone that wants to participate can add useful links to open knowledge resources. Would you like to drive this project with me? I would first ask you to add your links to the list and then we could look at tools in which we can make this interactive list look better, be more interactive and really make an onlile resource library. Please let me know what you think. What I do counts towards the final assesment and track, if we collaborate it could count for yours too, so you can benefit as well. I just feel like we could do more if we join forces. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lJ4GQpgdsFuELxmxb50WypzDq8-BLaAKL9OdKx8wBII/edit

Absolutely, this is a great idea - I will give it more thought tomorrow, but I am definately on board!

    Buen aporte. ----- Good contribution.
  •
Gracias por tu contribución. I liked it so much because of "Marine LitterWatch" because it is a really big problem in Mexico, it can be applied by government to clean the populated beaches, el Cañón del Sumidero or Sumidero Canyon, and to sensibilize people. Additional to that, the app can be used in big cities to decide where to colocate new tanks of rubbish.

Nature's Notebook | USA National Phenology Network - 1 views

  •
a huge citizen science project in the USA, formalizing the sharing of the traditional (and ancient) practice of Phenology. Phenology is an important way to be connected to the natural world around you--basically observation of seasonal changes. People have been collecting observations for all of human history--this project seeks to help standardize recording of the data so that it can be shared en mass, creating huge and flexible data sets for many different current and future scientific experiments. "Nature's Notebook is a national, online program where amateur and professional naturalists regularly record observations of plants and animals to generate long-term data sets used for scientific discovery and decision-making."
  •
oh, and an important thing is that (unlike some cit sci projects) the resulting data is shared freely online, check out some stats and visualizations at https://www.usanpn.org/data

Descubre, Fundación Andaluza para la divulgación de la Innovación y el Conocimiento I would like to introduce the Spanish Fundación Descubre (http://fundaciondescubre.es/) and, inside it, the network called "Divulga red" (http://divulgared.es/), thought to connect people (professional and amateur researchers and citizens in general), communicate and collaborate among them. DivulgaRed let people reveal research topics and the value of the science in different fields, sharing ideas with other researchers and group of people, all with the basis of a collaborative work. I had the pleasure of giving two talks in high-schools telling about optical communications and novelties that people can have in a near future. In a very good atmosphere, students and their own teachers asked me questions and I can enjoy a very nice atmosphere making my knowledge in this topic public. Even more, teachers in the high school were later discussing with me about possibilities in Education, and both they and me built some experiments to be made by students in the high school during the semester. So, as a concluding remark, every body who wants to share a new idea, or to obtain a new point of view, or simply who wants to introduce or simply to learn about a new topic is welcome in Fundación Descubre and DivulgaRed project. Regards. Dr. Antonio Jurado-Navas

Journalism, citizens and blogging - 0 views

This is my favorite article and it shows that old fashion publisher represent a barrier for knowledge flow, and they were misusing it. "Introduction:There is concern within democratic societies that a growing number of individuals are disconnecting from their role as citizens (Merritt and McCombs 2004: 47, Turner, G., 2005: 135, Dyrenfurth, N., 2005). Much of the blame for this disengagement has fallen upon the gatekeeping practices of journalism (Schechter, D., 2005: 70). These practices are often held to be counterproductive to journalism's primary purpose, which is to create an inclusive and diverse space for conversation between members of society about issues affecting their lives. Gatekeeping practices have the capacity to create gaps and silences, giving voice only to those already holding power. They give media corporations, politicians and large lobby groups the capacity to set the agenda on their terms and in their own best interests (Schechter, D., 2005: 70). "

Very recent video that has gone viral - two indian girls fight back after being sexually harassed on the bus. This video has brought a lot of media attention from all over the world to the mistreatment of women. As a form of citizen journalism, this video went viral through social media and has since stirred up political and social debates online, creating a movement for change.

This article shows the negative sides of citizen journalism. Honestly I agree in some cases that opinion pieces/unresearched work can be an issue.
