International Bioethics Research Training Program - 0 views

    The overall goal of this initiative is to support the development of a sustainable critical mass of bioethics scholars in low and middle income country (LMIC) research intensive institutions with the capabilities to conduct original empirical or conceptual ethics research that addresses challenging issues in health research and research policy in these countries as well as provide research ethics leadership to their institutions, governments and international research organizations. FIC will support LMIC-U.S. collaborative institutional bioethics doctoral and postdoctoral research training programs that incorporate didactic, mentored research and training components to prepare a number of individuals with ethics expertise for positions of scholarship and leadership in health research institutions in the LMIC.

    The successful applicant will join a team of scholars led by Emeritus Professor James Warren and focusing on the Southeast Asian and Indo-Pacific regions. Investigations centre upon periods of acute environmental crisis, variously characterized by natural disasters, epidemic disease, socio-economic instability, and migration, bondage, and mass mortality. Within this framework, researchers will investigate current and traditional perceptions of environmental risk and risk management, explore past-to-present patterns to the human and environmental dimensions of crisis, and apply the results of historical research to enhance environmental risk and governance protocols. This groundbreaking initiative is not limited to the discipline of history, involving geography, anthropology, and the environmental sciences.

    The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia invites U.S. and Georgian universities, educational institutes and non-profit/non-governmental organizations to submit proposals for a one- to two-year project to improve the standards of Georgian academic research in Georgian universities and educational institutes, and to encourage greater interaction between Georgian academic researchers, civil society, and government policy-makers. The project is meant to strengthen the quantitative and qualitative research skills and the academic writing of young Georgian scholars; raise Georgian scholarship to an international standard; and encourage the publication of Georgian scholarly research in Western academic and/or in Georgian peer reviewed journals in areas directly related to: domestic policy issues (i.e. health care, education, environment, civil service/personnel issues, local government, etc.) and comparative analyses (U.S.-Georgian). The proposal may also include teaching academic English and updating Georgian research library capacities and resources.

It has been selected for funding by the Portuguese Agency for Science and Technology (FCT) for the next 4 editions. This is an international and inter-university programme,with the participation of the most relevant Portuguese History departments from the University of Lisbon (Institute of Social Sciences and Faculty of Letters), ISCTE- Lisbon University Institute, Portuguese Catholic University and University of Évora.     The Office of Global Educational Programs of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State, is pleased to announce an open competition for proposals to advance the Bureau's objectives of mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries, specifically through greater U.S. student mobility, through the administration of the FY 2015 Capacity-Building Program for U.S. Undergraduate Study Abroad. This competition is a component of the Department's engagement on expanding and diversifying U.S. study abroad through its new U.S. study abroad unit. Under this cooperative agreement, the selected recipient will provide administrative support services, monitoring, evaluation, and programmatic advising and support to sub-recipients for the execution of ECA's FY 2015 Capacity-Building Program for U.S. Undergraduate Study Abroad. In close consultation with ECA, the recipient will run a nationwide competition to provide awards averaging approximately $50,000 to between 17 to 20 accredited U.S. higher education institutions (HEIs) to create or expand their U.S. study abroad programs under outlined diversity goals. None of the funding may be used for student scholarships. The recipient will monitor the fiscal and programmatic progress of sub-recipients and their projects with regular reporting of results to ECA. The Capacity-Building Program for U.S. Undergraduate Study Abroad should be designed to create or expand the capacity of U.S. HEIs to administer study abroad programs under diversity goals, whether broadening the student population who studies abroad and/or the destinations in which they study. It is also intended to allow U.S. institutions to collaborate with and help expand the capacity of overseas HEIs to provide academic programs for U.S. undergraduate students.

Media@McGill offers Postdoctoral Fellowships to promising scholars engaging in media-related research, as defined in Media@McGill's mission statement. Fellows are provided with a workspace, and are expected to take an active role in the research activities and academic life of Media@McGill (participation in conferences, seminars, etc.). They may also have the possibility of teaching a course within the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill. Eligibility: The Media@McGill Postdoctoral Fellowship is open to both national and international scholars who completed their doctoral degrees in a university other than McGill no earlier than June 1, 2010. Candidates must have received their PhD by May 1, 2014. Fluency in English is essential; working knowledge of French is an asset.     This fellowship is open to outstanding young professors from universities from developing and emerging countries pursuing advanced research in areas bridging the fields of international and development studies, broadly defined, and working in disciplines such as anthropology, history, law, politics and political science, and economics.  Scholars will spend one academic semester (mandatory duration: 3 months minimum - 5 months maximum) at the Institute to : Share their expertise and experience with students and professors at the Institute ; Further a personal research project ; Participate in teaching courses ; Update and strengthen the curriculum of their course ; Develop their contacts with the international community of the Institute and Geneva area.     Researchers from accredited universities and non-profit research institutions register online and submit internship offers, including a one to three page project description, from October 7, 2013 through November 24, 2013. DAAD posts the internship offers in a database on its website. German applicants register online to review the internship offers. They apply from December 2, 2013 through January 12, 2014 to a maximum of three projects. The German applicants' profiles are checked for eligibility by DAAD staff and are then activated to be reviewed online by the researchers. The prospective hosts are asked to provide DAAD with their quality assessment of applications their projects. DAAD places students with internship projects and awards scholarships based on academic merit and the internship providers' quality assessment. Future hosts and interns are notified of the decision at the beginning of March 2014.

    The goal of the National Robotics Initiative is to accelerate the development and use of robots in the United States that work beside, or cooperatively with, people. Innovative robotics research and applications emphasizing the realization of such co-robots acting in direct support of and in a symbiotic relationship with human partners is supported by multiple agencies of the federal government including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The purpose of this program is the development of this next generation of robotics, to advance the capability and usability of such systems and artifacts, and to encourage existing and new communities to focus on innovative application areas. It will address the entire life cycle from fundamental research and development to manufacturing and deployment. Methods for the establishment and infusion of robotics in educational curricula and research to gain a better understanding of the long term social, behavioral and economic implications of co-robots across all areas of human activity are important parts of this initiative. Collaboration between academic, industry, non-profit and other organizations is strongly encouraged to establish better linkages between fundamental science and technology development, deployment and use.O
