  • The quality and quantity with which one approaches practicing are key factors in the development of expert instrumental performance skill (Ericsson, Krampe, & Tesch-Romer, 1993). Miksza (2007), Frost and Hamann (2000), and McPherson (2000) have all found that instrumental performance is related to the quality as well as the quantity of practice.

  • Other researchers have found that novice adolescent musicians tend to exhibit inconsistent practice habits. Rohwer and Polk (2006) categorized the practice tendencies of students as holistic/noncorrective, holistic/corrective, analytic/reactive, or analytic/proactive. They described analytic practicers as those who were prone to remediate sections of their music both proactively and reactively, and they found that these students made significantly more gains than did the holistic practicers. Barry (1990, 1992) focused on the use of structured practice time and supervision in middle school instrumental students and found that the students were significantly more able to prepare a musical etude when practice was carefully structured and supervised. Like McPherson and Renwick (2001), Barry found that students who engaged in unstructured practice tended to play their music faster, use a metronome less, use fewer mental practice strategies, and self-assessed less than those who engaged in structured and supervised practice.

    The University of Indiana has provided a comprehensive set of individual instrument instructional videos for all instruments. These instructional videos include woodwind, brass, percussion, harp, keyboards, strings, and fretted strings. The view can pause the videos at any time and interact with the musical passages on the right side of the video. In addition to this being a comprehensive set of resources, it is also through a reputable source.

    CHARMS is a great management and communication program that places all styles of databases into one central location. Is a great way to manage funds, communicate with members and parents as well as store recordings and inventory. Charms has been used by band programs and other fine arts programs as an office assistant and is proven to be effective in the testimonials section of their website.

    Online Practice Record is a fantastic tool to aide performers of all levels with keeping a record of their practice. The program is easy to use and tracks practice time, music practiced, and questions or comments the user might have to refer to later. The records can be printed or emailed to others, which is an important feature for teachers. The teacher even has the option of entering comments directly into a practice record.

    This site is great for teachers looking to motivate students to practice more consistently. Its purpose is to make practicing more interactive by providing a record of student practicing and the opportunity for teachers to view and comment on the student's practicing. The recourses include practice logs, comments by teachers, student-set goals, and the pieces practiced. This site is very student-directed in the sense that the students set their own practice goals and must be motivated to be more successful in their practicing in order to make progress in their record of practicing statistics. Although you do have to register to use this site, there is no charge and it allows teachers to provdie students with some guidance in their practicing.

    This website offers a multitude of resources designed for music-making. This specific organization is devoted to offering musical programs to students who are in the 80% of the population that are not involved in performing ensembles. It offers curriculum, lesson plans, and interactive activities for guitar, piano, drums, bass, ukulele, composition, voice and more. There are free PDF songbooks and lesson plans that are connected to the program, that are extremely helpful towards teacher and student interest. The best part of the program is that the majority of the music is examples that students know already - a lot of pop, rock, and even hip-hop. It connects the bridge between traditional musical concepts with music of today.

    This site is provided by the music technology teachers at Green Acres Middle School in Birmingham, Alabama. The site is a very useful resource for both music technology and general music teachers. The purpose of the site is to provide online lessons, quizzes, practice opportunities, and assistance with music theory. The site contains a variety of simple piano practice pieces such as "Jingle Bells," "All Through the Night," "Ode to Joy," and many others.

    Resource for UF Masters in Music Education. I love this resource primarily for the fun and interactive nature that the games provide to my classroom. There are plenty of resources such as lessons, pre-made assessment, and videos. However, the games allow students to enjoy learning through assessment and interactive scenarios.

    Quaver has a large amount of lessons available for teaching from PreK-8th grade. It is probably the most complete music teaching software resource I have found. This could be used in any general music class as well as ensembles. It is much more interactive than a textbook and the interface changes as the grade level increases so that it remains engaging for the age group.

    This website is awesome! I call it "Quaver the Saver." When you can't figure out how to explain a concept clearly, show a Quaver DVD. The DVDs are You can purchase the DVDs and access a multitude of resources with a subscription. Great for Elementary General Music.

    The Recording Revolution blog and joint YouTube account, are great resources for teachers who are introducing the concept of mixing to students. The blogs cover a wide range of FAQ from beginners and feature videos that use Pro Tools as the DAW, but can be applied to any DAW that has comparable plugins and effects.

    Blog for home studio recording by Graham Cochrane. Graham provides excellent posts as well as videos on music production, engineering, recording, and mixing that are geared to home studio enthusiasts but would be a great resource for high school music technology courses as well.
