Achievethecore.org :: Instructional Practice Guide - 1 views

  • The Instructional Practice Guide includes coaching and lesson planning tools to help teachers and those who support teachers to make the Key Shifts in instructional practice required by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).   In order for teachers, colleagues, and instructional leaders to have meaningful and productive conversations about instructional goals and outcomes, there must be shared expectations regarding lesson planning and observation. These tools provide common criteria framed around the Key Shifts required by the CCSS that can be used to facilitate conversations between teachers and coaches about aligning content and instruction. By using these tools to reflect on practice, clear connections can be made between Common Core-aligned lesson planning and classroom instruction--conversations which can supplement information from other established observation protocols that focus on planning and preparation,  classroom management and environment, and professional responsibilities.

This website just comes to show how many resources are actually out there for teachers to use and improve their teaching. This website is all about helping teacher achieve the core and in the classroom. There is administrative tools for coaching teachers in instructing the core. Videos of classrooms that follow the core . It seems very similar to the Teaching Channel just this one has a different emphasis.

Websites like this that have a list of other places to go make it easy to keep your resources organized and who doesn't love free online resources!

This website is a lot like the one Tabatha posted, I like that there are websites out there that can give a teacher multiple resources on just one page, it takes the search out of teaching, which is really appreciated from a busy teacher. This is mainly for teacher use, but students benefit.

3 Ways to Plan for Diverse Learners: What Teachers Do - 1 views

  • every teacher already has the tools to differentiate in powerful ways for all learners
  • The core of differentiation is a relationship between teachers and students. The teacher's responsibility is connecting content, process, and product. Students respond to learning based on readiness, interests, and learning profile.
  • Content is comprised of the knowledge, concepts, and skills that students need to learn based on the curriculum.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • If we provide a variety of ways to explore the content outcomes, learners find different ways to connect.
  • Process is how students make sense of the content. They need time to reflect and digest the learning activities before moving on to the next segment of a lesson.
  • Processing helps students assess what they do and don't understand.
  • Reflection is a powerful skill that is developed during processing experiences
  • Product differentiation is probably the most common form of differentiation. Teachers give choices where students pick from formats. Students propose their own designs.
  • The key to product options is having clear academic criteria that students understand.
  • When considering your students' needs, reach even higher in your practice -- that extra stretch is inside us all -- and students will benefit.
  •
This article describes the teacher's role for effective planning of differentiated instruction. I hope that I can use the three points in this article (differentiating content, process, and product) in order to create the best learning experiences for my students.

Social Media Has Changed Our Language | Language Arts Classroom - 1 views

  • Language always changes. Scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, anyone can notice this change. That’s not a negative, and it’s worth noting with our students. They use social media, and the discussion can fit into an ELA class.
  • Here are new words or definitions for words that I would argue came about because of social media. “Verses” as a verb. As in, our soccer team is verses Washington tonight.  “Couponing.” (My spell check highlighted this). The rise of reality television coupon and money saving shows gave us “couponing.” Couponing is a sport for certain people at the grocery store. “Adulting.” Students may not use this word often, but their parents might. (And again – spell check highlighted this). I adulted hard this weekend; I cleaned the house and went grocery shopping.  “Hashtagging.” Formerly known as the pound sign, the hashtag provides categories of messages. Are you hashtagging the awards show tonight? The hashtag often leads to… tags… “Tagging.” Not your clothing, but rather your friends. Will you tag me in your status? “Fail.” Normally present in, #epicfail. “Fail” was once a grade or effort, but now it has replaced “not doing well.” I am failing at life today.
  •
I plan to discuss with my 6th grade language arts students how social media has changed our language. I can use this as part of the digital literacy lessons that I plan to do this year and am currently working on creating.
  •
Hi Trina, This article really peaked my interest as I've seen similar behaviors with my students. I think it is especially prevalent with secondary students as they are probably the most invested in social media platforms. I think that this could transition into a great digital literacy lesson talking about the difference between "internet speak" and proper grammar. I would love to see what you come up with based on this topic!
  •
I found this article extremely relevant and something to definitely be shared with students and teachers. It could definitely cause issues in the classroom, but language is always changing so the classroom language will evolve with it. Something to keep in mind with my future classroom!

Erin this looks like a great website. Although I won't be able to use it in my classroom, I can definitely see how it would be beneficial for grade school and middle school teachers. I think this will be a great resource for both students and teachers, and is very interactive. The pictures just "pop" off the page and provides great educational opportunities for students.
  •
This looks like an awesome website for students who are researching about marine life. There is a lot to look at and search on this website. I think I would enjoy using this website in my classroom someday.
  •
Erin, this looks like a really great website for educators! I noticed they have a section just for educators where you can see lesson plans and activities! That is so awesome! I definitely agree with Megan I can see this being used more in an elementary or middle school setting but I think it would be a great resource!
  •
Erin - I really like the layout of this site I think it could be a valuable site for sharing rich photos and videos for science classes I also think this resource could be used as a credible research resource for students. Here is another well done science site that is very similar. http://goo.gl/WULg4n

Erin this looks like a great site for students who want to learn about the ocean. When I visited it I noticed just how easy the site was to navigate. Super simple for people who might now be to tech savvy. Everything was laid out in an easy to read manner. The articles looked fun and full of information. If I ever became a teacher and we were learning about the ocean this would be a huge help, because the Smithsonian is one of the most prestigious organizations in the world. The Smithsonian has many different interactive website that deal with all different parts of our planet, and the ocean is just on small sliver of their knowledge.

I really liked this website, and I remember liking the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, itself. The site is very user-friendly for both teachers and students.

TWO WRITING TEACHERS | A meeting place for a world of reflective writers. - 2 views

  •
A meeting place for a world of reflective writers. This blog is outstanding! I have been trying to come up with new ways to become a better writing teacher. These writing teachers provide free resources for a writing binder they created with their students, and I plan to implement this into my own class!
  •
Since I am a TESOL major, I am very interested in motivation for writing and ways to make writing fun! I definitely think I would use this in the future for advanced students for ESL. It would help me think of new prompts, new ways to make writing fun, and motivation for students. The website is definitely for teacher use because it is a resource for lesson plans and activities. I said it before, there will always be blogs and websites that give resources and ideas like this. But there are a lot of bad blogs and websites and this one definitely has a lot of good ideas!
  •
Great blog, I like how they have it organized and the amount of resources you can find on this blog. This blog had many great ideas for teachers to use while teaching students writing. This is a resource that would be helpful for teachers.

This looks like a great blog for resources, Kim! This blog seems to be full of math resources and ideas which could be a great asset to teachers! This would obviously be best utilized by teachers to prepare for their math lessons, etc., though the students would benefit from the added preparation and materials this blog provides for their math sessions as well! I know of many other blogs that provide resources and ideas like this one, and they are always so helpful in brainstorming new teaching practices!
  •
This looks like a great resource for math teachers! I love that she gives new tips with each entry. I can see where this could be a resource for teacher, but also, how students could benefit from some of resources that she posts about. I could definitely see myself consulting this for different reasons throughout my lesson planning. Another website that also offers some great math resources is www.k-5mathteachingresources.com

50+ Tools for Differentiating Instruction Through Social Media | Edutopia - 1 views

  • Imagine a world where resources were limited to what was found in the classroom or the school closet known as the "Curriculum Materials Room." Picture a world where students wrote letters with pen and paper to communicate with other students and adults outside of the building. Due to postage costs, the teacher either sent the letters in bulk or paid for stamps out of his or her own pocket. Can you recall a time when student interests like skateboarding or video were never used as part of learning curriculum because the tools needed were either too expensive or not yet conceptualized? Do you remember a time when non-traditional learners struggled, and absenteeism meant a high likelihood of students doing poorly in school, and possibly having to retake the course?
  •
Social media can enhance differentiated instruction if the tools are selected with a careful eye on individual students' readiness, interests, and learning profiles. In my classroom, I plan to try out "Kaizena" which is introduced on this website. I will use "Kaizena" to give feedback to my students' writing pieces.

Catlin Tucker is an experienced teacher that documents her journey with blended learning. She not only puts on lesson plans, ideas, and resources, but she also makes tutorials for most of the websites/apps.
  •
This is a very cool website. This website has a great deal of information on it and Catlin is very inspirational. I think this resource would be good for teachers to glim inspiration form and for Catlin's students to access information about her courses. For a teacher to have a website is a very new thing and I am sure that many teachers do but have never explored one before; good find!
