How EBay Failed In China - Forbes - 0 views

  • In 2004, eBay had just entered China and was planning to dominate the China market. Alibaba was a local Chinese company that helped small- and medium-sized enterprises conducting business online.
  • As a defensive strategy, Ma decided to launch a competing consumer-to-consumer (C2C) auction site, not to make money, but to fend off eBay from taking away Alibaba’s customers.
  • While visiting Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, I felt the same “insanely great” energy of entrepreneurship as I felt in Silicon Valley.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • A new Web site named Taobao—meaning “digging for treasure”
  • Knowing that most small business people would rather watch TV than log on to the Internet, Ma secured advertisements for Taobao on major TV channels.
  • Unlike eBay EachNet, which charged its sellers for listing and transaction fees, Taobao was free to use.
  • According to a Morgan Stanley report, Taobao was more customer focused and user friendly than eBay EachNet.
  • Taobao had also better terms for its customers: it offered longer listing periods (fourteen days) and let customers extend for one more period automatically. EBay EachNet did not have this flexibility.
  •
This is a very interesting article. As a Chinese teenager, I can experience all the changes and development of Taobao and how it won Chinese market that the author mentioned in this article. eBay can be successful in an international market, while failed rapidly in Chinese market. Firstly we can see how competitive the online market is. After this we also want to ask why eBay was beaten in China? The author of this article listed four reasons: 1) Compared with eBay, Taobao has better marketing strategies in dealing with local market. At the beginning, Taobao promoted itself through TV ads and later used short messages, which were more popular than Internet in China. 2) Taobao has less limitations on buyers and sellers through the whole process. For instance Taobao charges no listing and transaction fees on its sellers and it's free to register as a user in Taobao 3) Products made in China gives Taobao more chances to sell goods in competitive price. 3)Taobao has better terms for its customers, which helps it o to earn a good reputation and also makes Taobao more flexible in customer service. 4) The way that Taobao lists its items are more customer centric and adaptable to Chinese customers' tastes. E-commerce can bring unlimited chances and is full of adventures. As for me, marketing skills, excellent customer service and high-tech are the same important for a company if it wants to increase the share of market and makes profit. Taobao can be set as a good example in e-commerce history.

The Future of a Revenue Manager 2.0 - Part Human, Part Computer, All Profits | By Jean ... - 1 views

  • The article's data pointed out that as technology evolves, analytical pricing models and social networking/mobile technology are going to have a major impact on the future.
  • Already schooled in the way in which mobile has radically altered the air travel booking and in-flight entertainment experience, hotels guests are using everything from social media to online travel agents, (OTAs) to seek out and locate the best value.
  • With the continued emergence of e-commerce, social media, and travel review sites, RM's have even more to consider than just occupancy and profitability.
  •
The article states that future Revenue Managers must be very tenacious in balancing the power of technology and managing the data process. With the advances of technology, social networking, e-commerce, online travel agencies, and mobile technology e-business have a great impact in our industry. Mourier claims "Already schooled in the way in which mobile has radically altered the air travel booking and in-flight entertainment experience, hotels guests are using everything from social media to online travel agents, (OTAs) to seek out and locate the best value." With the influence of social media, e-commerce, and travel review sites such as tripadvisor, Revenue Managers have to consider the impact those have in their businesses. Revenue managers need to understand what drives potential customers to stay in their hotels. The future Revenue Manager should possesses technological skills, understand the global market conditions, advances in technology, being cost effective, understand the importance of overall package deals and incentives, familiarize himself with the great impact of social media and advances in technology. "What's the cost-benefit analysis of launching a mobile-enabled web page versus an app and is having both redundant? Admittedly, there's no single answer to these questions and no one size fits all so the sooner RMs and hotel executives begin this conversation, the better," and have great leadership skills. It is really important that hotel managers understand that in todays' world technology can be a competitive advantage of their hotels if the use it adequately.
  •
Your description of the article is very enlightening. Revenue managers really need to step up their game if their hotels are to remain in the running. This places a lot of pressure on them, but I like how you addressed their meeting with hotel executives. Perhaps the need for review of e-commerce and social media along with travel review sites will create a new position within the organization, it seems like too much for one RM.

TECHNOLOGY, MEDIA & TELECOMMUNICATIONS ISSUES IN THE HOSPITALITY SECTOR - Al Tamimi & C... - 0 views

  • Using hotels as a basic reference, one key area where specialist TMT legal support is essential is in respect of technology.
  • Most hotels employ a combination of ‘off-the-shelf” and customized software applications in order to manage a variety of functions, such as reservations and F&B inventory. Such software applications must be appropriately licensed to the hotel by the software provider, and suitably maintained (eg. by an annual maintenance agreement with a service provider), so as to ensure that updates are applied and any errors in respect of such applications do not adversely affect operations.  Another example of the type of Technology work we handle is in advising some of the well-known international on-line travel or accommodation booking service providers about the extent to which their on-line activities may need to be licensed in the Middle East region.

This is an interview between and head of hospitality practice and a technical specialist. The article is highlighting the digital marketing trends in the Hospitality Industry today. Since technology has such a strong presence, in the world we live in, e marketing such as social media, video and social marketing are becoming more important in building brand loyalty. The 6 trends mentioned in the article, are stating how these types of marketing skills have the ability to reach a broader audience and also helps to provide real-time data on how the company is performing. The use of this marketing strategy is creating higher profits and increasing the standards within the hospitality industry. Hoteliers have a bigger focus on legal issues, safety and security, diversity and demographics and the value that such technology brings or adds to the business. A great example used within the article is the use of social media, i think this is the most effective and cost effective tactic. It doesn't take much to have the marketing department create a social media platform(s) and try to advertise via e-flyer, e-menus and even videos that help to increase sales. The use of e-marketing allows a company to reach a bigger audience then just locally. There are plenty of shops that start off small but gain massive success with advertising online. Best example would be Salty Donuts, main source of advertising being social media.

The Advantages of Being Computer Literate in the Workforce | Chron.com - 0 views

  • Although employers expect prospective hires to have a basic knowledge of standard office software programs and internet capabilities, they prefer to see a higher level of competency beyond the basics.
  • If a prospect is already well-versed in the necessary programs for the job, the costs to train new hires drops, as well.
  •
Computer skills are listed on almost every job description posted. However, companies are now being more selective when choosing the candidate that will be more cost effective for their organization. Employee turnover is becoming more expensive especially if it is a seasoned employee with the database knowledge for the organization. Each employee comes with a cost to train, if the employee enters the job with prior computer knowledge the fees associated to hiring that person are less. From a personal standpoint, when looking to hire a front desk agent and two agents apply one with prior experience on Opera PMS and one without, I would hire the agent with experience. This is a cost savings measure for me on labor as the experienced employee would require less training time. In my opinion, a 2 week notice is very rare in our industry or with the new generation in general. Therefore causing employers to be in an urgent state to hire when one employee leaves. Finding the appropriate candidate with prior computer based knowledge is only more enticing with that in mind.

How Event Planning And Hospitality Intersect — The Everwall Blog - 0 views

This article answers two major questions; what is the connection between event management and the hospitality field? Why exactly is event planning considered to fall under the umbrella of hospitality? The link between event planning and hospitality is that the set of skills needed to succeed in the various hospitality-related careers is similar to those required to be a successful event planner. Some of these skills include quick thinking, in-depth understanding of logistics, strong organizational streak and maintaining good relationships with people. Both require having the ability to understand and meet of the customers without exceeding the budget. Just like running a business, hosting an event is a difficult job and requires a person with the ability to handle pressure. The article concludes by stating that though people in the two fields may face different challenges, the approach of solving these challenges remains the same.

Hospitality, event management and tourism | Education | The Guardian - 0 views

  •
Courses in this field teach you about event bidding, finance and accounting, project management and much more. Hospitality, events and tourism students often sit within one department and, understandably, they gain many of the same professional skills. Hospitality students tend to focus more specifically on the running of hotels, restaurants, catering businesses and events. They have lectures on quality control, the latest food and drink, front of house and housekeeping skills. On event management courses, an emphasis is place on the broader picture, for example, how do you plan, promote and run events? And the term events is incredibly diverse, including anything from a small wedding to a big corporate meeting or the American super bowl. Tourism students will learn all about how to manage the movement of people around the planet, and think about what the economic, environmental and social impacts of this movement are. Our national heritage, forests, coastlines and culture are dependent on tourism, and need to be managed by professionals who understand who travels, how they travel and why they travel. When natural and manmade disasters strike, tourism professionals need to know how to respond and how to help companies and destinations recover.

The tourism industry's biggest challenge in embracing the digital age - 0 views

  • The face of travel and tourism sectors across the globe has felt the revolutionising forces of technology, but what is the biggest challenge associated with this giant shift?
  • the biggest challenge that comes with technological advancement is the probability of replacing existing staff with a technological device, since the device can do the same job just as well.
  • “The advancement of technology in the industry comes with many advantages: a travel agent in the 90s compared to a travel agent now is as different as night and day. But we can’t afford for this change to be the cause of a loss of jobs merely because a machine can do the work. We need to continue to innovate the way we deliver a service to customers, incorporating both the benefits of technology and human touch,” he says.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • “We need to commit ourselves to making technology work for us. If we need to introduce new skills and up-skill our staff, let’s look at the kind of interventions necessary to move the industry further forward. And when we do, our future will look even brighter,” he says.
  •
Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa stated "the biggest challenge that comes with technological advancement is the probability of replacing existing staff with a technological device, since the device can do the same job just as well." This statement holds true for every single country in this world. The more technologically advanced we become, jobs will start to be replaced by technology that could do it just as well if not better than a human. For instance, the new check-in kiosks are becoming more and more a hit, and as they do you'll see hotels switch to them quicker to cut labor cost. Investing into I.T. in the hospitality industry is an everyday gamble because today they could come out with something that could be better of us at the front desk but tomorrow they could release something 10x better than this.

Technology is changing the overall event management experience making events more productive and fun. This article touches on things like advances in event organizing software, real-time feedback for speakers and data collection of attendees that can lead to personalizing activities throughout the event. I think most professional public speakers would say they already get real-time feedback from their audiences; no technology required. But for more novice speakers, that type of feedback would not only improve their session, but also help them hone their speaking and delivery skills more quickly allowing them to become better speakers faster. Personalizing an event to each attendee sounds pretty cool. Read the section about using the data collected during the registration process. It's interesting to think the data could be cross-referenced to bring delegates together for networking opportunities. Making important business contacts is a key reason people attend events.

14 Main Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer Networking - Green Garage - 1 views

  •
Advantages will reign from the obvious such as being able to speak in real time to people across the country, therefore communicating messages faster. This helps businesses be more successful due to relaying data faster and more accurately, seeing trends in different areas sooner, to sending files at a quicker rate. Items shared on networks allow for more people to have access to information at a quicker rate along with information being shared more accurate due to being in real time. Time is money and network sharing helps save time which in turn is saving money. Along with saving money because time is being saved, the lack of software changes assists in saving money as well. If you are not having to replace software often, you are able to provide longevity of equipment to help reduce costs. On the other hand there are many disadvantages that can seem to outweigh the advantages if not looking at the entire picture. If a network breaks down, everyone working off of that network can be out of work for the time it is being fixed. Would this be worth taking the risk of calculating how many hours of work that is lost based on how efficiently the system works? Now to fix this issue this requires someone who is trained in this field at a high technical skill level to fix the network error which can cost a great deal of money to maintain. What if an employee is being distracted by the many things the internet has to offer and is using your network to look these things up? They are now being unproductive at work and putting your network at risk for malware, viruses and many other illicit practices. So once again, is the risk worth the reward.
