  • A host of technologies and service concepts have come on the scene as of late: "smart" coolers, third party delivery, artificial intelligence, computer vision and biometric identity verification
  • Moderator Bill Moxey, director of strategy and planning at PepsiCo Inc., made one thing clear at the outset: Thousands of locations will be adding unattended retail concepts and technologies in the near future as the consumer's preference for self service is stronger than ever.
  • Consumers wanted to know exactly what they were getting… and they didn't feel pressure about somebody asking if they wanted a side."

  • When consumers feel less pressure, they feel more comfortable…and we buy more," he said. They will spend 20% to 40% more per transaction in an unattended setting.
  • According to the research, half of consumers think unattended is faster and more than a third of consumers think unattended is more efficient, Moxey said. Two thirds say it is more comfortable, and one third like the ability to browse and purchase without interacting with employees. The biggest takeaway is consumers don't feel pressure and they feel safe.
  • When consumers get full control over the experience, they get more excited.
  • The expansion will include a projected 12,000 lodging sites, a projected 3,000 airports, a projected 11,000 health care sites, a projected 3,000 college and university sites (including gyms, libraries, common areas and auditoriums), Moxey said. The majority of expansion will be in healthcare, travel and recreation channels.
  • Coffey pointed out that consumers on average increased snack consumption from 2.2 snacks per day to over five snacks."The people at home were rewarding themselves between Zoom calls," he said. When they go back to work, these habits won't change, he said
  • lassman said the pantry/OCS future is hard to gauge since it depends on customer budgets. With economies scaling and budgets cycling, there will be some type of need, he said, but the scale of it is uncertain.

3 Reasons Why Unattended Retail Is The Future | Global Payments - 1 views

  • To many consumers, the future of being able to walk into a store, pull something off of a shelf and leave without the hassle of the checkout process sounds like Jetsons-futuristic-type stuff
  • For example, Uber lets consumers get a ride to wherever they want to go without ever having to pull out their wallet to pay.
  • Because customers enrolled in your loyalty program may permit you to acquire data about their purchases, you can personalize your customer's shopping experiences even more while they’re right there in the store with specific offers that complement their buying preferences.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Not having to staff employees during your hours of operations results in a cost savings that could go straight to your bottom line. Having the flexibility to reallocate staffing and potentially lowering labor expenses opens up opportunities to extend your hours of operation creating more cash flow, meaning more revenue in your pocket
  • unattended retail can lower the instances of shrinkage because the technology provides real-time inventory tracking
  • To help wrap your mind around the future of retail, look at Amazon Go, a brick and mortar retail and grocery store powered by Amazon, which allows shoppers to "Grab and Go" without ever having to wait in line to pay for their items.
  •
It seems that stores have just begun to jump on the self-checkout process. However, the self-checkouts are old news, the technology that is coming out now, known as "Grab and Go" is creating an even more automated process. This technology can allow you to take an item off the shelf (update inventory immediately) and simply walk out of the store, without ever having to take out your wallet. Spending money is becoming easier and easier, allowing consumers to consume more than ever. Some pros of this technology include, customer loyalty (personalizing the customers experience), lower overhead (saving money on labor costs and extending hours), and reduces shrinkage (real-time inventory tracking). Technology is improving so quickly that it is hard for companies to keep up and stay up-to-date. For example, the self-checkouts have just become a norm; how long until they are fully replaced by "Grab and Go?"

The Robots Are The Chefs In This Japanese Restaurant | Singularity Hub - 0 views

  • ou can see other customers in the restaurant as they experience the restaurant in their own way – some mesmerized by the robots, others focused on their food and seemingly oblivious to the fact that the robots are even there.  Its an awesome scene.
  • The robots are fully autonomous, taking a customer order and cooking it from start to finish.  This includes boiling the noodles, pouring broth, adding spices and toppings, and so on.  The orders are complex too, requiring the robots to take customer preference for amount and type of sauce, salt, noodle, and so on.   The finished product is handed off to a human server who brings the food to the customer’s table.  The irony could not be more real as we witness the lowly human in the role of a mere server while the robot takes on the cooking.
  • The restaurant, called FA-men (pronounced Fu-a-men) based in Nagoya, Japan, takes its name from the phrase “Fully Automated raMEN” says Ni-Lab.  Not content to simply sit around when there are no orders to cook, the robots can be seen doing tricks and even performing pretend combat with a sword (knife) and a shield (plate) in homage to Manzai, a  style of stand-up comedy in Japan.  If you know Japanese, or are just curious, you can check out FA-men’s website.

Here we are, this post make the unattended POS a child's toy in the hospitality industry, look at the robot chef! The customers come into this restaurant to enjoy their meal, and suddenly they realize that their food are prepared by robots! from boiling the water, choose the customer's sauce according to the order... one thing I know, is that they will probably never mess up the order. The dish then is hand over to the HUMAN server to bring to the table. When is the last time you hear about this word? A HUMAN server? I think that in the near future, we can walk into a restaurant and find out that there is no HUMAN server, or HUMAN cook, or ever HUMAN manager. But the customers are still HUMAN though.

The Truth About Self-Serve Kiosks At Fast Food Restaurants - 0 views

  • self-serve technology is not only making fast food service more efficient, but also subtly changing customer behavior. Namely, it is encouraging people to spend more
  • elf-serve kiosks increase customer spending, on average, by 20%, and this figure is borne out by data presented in a 2015 Harvard Business Review article. According to the review, major chains, including Taco Bell, McDonald's, and Chilis have all reported self-serve kiosks generating larger sales than in-person ordering, usually by a margin of 20%. In one instance, McDonald's even saw sales increase by as much as 30%.
  • On the one hand, standard industry practices such as "upselling" (promoting premium goods, add-ons, and customization) are programmed right into the machines. Human cashiers may neglect to upsell, but self-serve kiosks can't help but do so (via FoodTec). Given the visual nature of self-serve kiosks, upselling can be cleverly woven into the menu itself, and more easily escape customer notice.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • In a 2017 study published in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, researchers demonstrated that touch screens create "experiential and effective feelings" in customers — and, moreover, a greater sense of privacy. In short, customers are happier and more self-assured when using self-serve kiosks, and are therefore more likely to spend more.
  • Using a self-service kiosk can be a joyful experience, but one that comes at a cost if you're not careful.
  •
The self-serve kiosks or unattended POS systems are changing the customer behavior and getting consumers to spend more. Many major chain restaurants have incorporated them in their business such as Chilis, McDonalds and Taco Bell. Kiosks tend to upsell the customer while regular cashiers may not. Self serve is bette for business, not so much for the customers wallet.

Chili's Has Installed More Than 45,000 Tablets in Its Restaurants - The Atlantic - 0 views

  • That doesn't necessarily herald the end of human-centered food service
  •  The Chili's version of the Ziosk menus is programmed to have images of dessert (a molten chocolate cake, say) pop up while customers are still eating their main courses. This has led, Chili's says, to a 20-percent increase in dessert sales. (Ziosk claims a 30-percent dessert-sale bump for its clients overall.)
  • de-humanizing the restaurant is, it turns out, good busines
  • That's in part because the tablets set defaults for tip amounts. The machines automatically suggest a tip of 20 percent
  • active attempt to minimize the interaction Chili's customers have with human
  • Chili's recently made a big change to its in-store ordering system. The chain partnered with Ziosk, the restaurant-targeted tablet-maker, to develop a series of tabletop devices that allow customers to order their meals
  • The tablets let your order your meal—and pay for it—through a screen, as you would with online ordering.
  • Chili's still requires people, of course, to do the actual delivery of the food customers order. There are still servers doing the serving at Chili's.
  • Ziosk claims to have found a 20-percent increase in appetizer sales, as compared with standard, server-based ordering strategies.
  •
I love this article because it presents such a positive view of the unattended POS system in a restaurant setting. It poses human interaction as a nuisance which prevents customers from ordering more food. The way that it is explained is that the device will not judge someone for asking for too much or customizing their order too much, so customers feel more powerful in ordering exactly what they want. The article also provides several statistics showing how Chili's has increased their appetizer and dessert sales by using these tablets. The advertisements that are displayed on the machines lure customers into ordering more of these items.

This article is based on the Boston Marathon bombing and talk about the security in hotel. In hospitality industry, it's easy to be in danger because the staffs are trained to please the potential consumers in order to not be complaint. One more advise in this article is the staff should be trained to pick up and investigate unattended bags or luggage, I think that isn't a good idea because like what I said, the hospitality staff don't like being complaint.
