This article discusses the different aspects of choosing the best PMS for a companies specific needs. It offers several points to consider when selecting a PMS including what features to look for and hidden cost traps. The first and main point in selecting a PMS is to identify exactly what it is you need. This will help to eliminate unnecessary features that add to the cost allowing you to focus on more useful features or collect the savings. This is a very good tip it seems because PMSs have many different options, some of which that wouldn't benefit certain types of business. It would be wise to consider all the features included and their necessity for this reason allowing more efficient programs or savings. The next points discuss several traps that PMSs can include like hidden costs and technical support problems. Sometimes products may require costly upgrades that you are forced to buy in order for the system to run properly. This is definitely a factor to investigate when choosing a PMS as it could result in significant expenses to a company. Also if technical support is needed make sure the conditions are fair. This is also important because when the technology breaks down it will directly effect the cost and repair time. These are all excellent factors to consider when looking for a PMS because they all effect the main focus: money.

Selecting the Right Property Management System (PMS) for Your Hotel - 1 views

  •
This article discusses how to select the right Property Management System (PMS) for hotels and specifies procedures that the hotels need to follow. The first step in selecting a PMS is that hotels need to foam an evaluation team that includes managers, staff from different departments, such as front desk, accounting, housekeeping, and IT, in order to make sure the PMS works for everyone. Then, the hotel should determine its budget, making sure they don't waste time for a PMS out of their price range. Once the budget is set, the evaluation team should conduct a needs assessment to ensure that they only buy features they need. Next, researching the PMSs that meet the hotels' requirements and fit the budget is necessary. This article emphasizes some key features, such as user-friendly design, guest-oriented functionality, integration with other system, etc., to consider when evaluating the PMSs. After the hotel has completed its research, they need to narrow the options down to top two or three, and to have the selected vendors demonstrate their products in front of the evaluation team. After all, the hotels can choose the right one which works the best for them. Competition in the hospitality business has been intense, so it is essential to invest in technology, such as Property Management System (PMS), to streamline operations, enhance guest service, and ultimately win competition over others. However, there are so many PMS options to choose on the market, so it is also critical to know what procedures to follow, and to choose the most suitable PMS for each business.

Right Property Management System is Key to Your Hotel's Success. - Saturday, 27th July ... - 1 views

  • Ask any hotelier and they will all agree that a hotel management system plays a key role in their hotel’s success.
  • At the back-end, hotel software is even more important. The front office module, point of sale, accounts receivable, banquets and conferences, restaurant module, housekeeping, inventory, HR and Payroll, along with a host of other modules and apps in a hotel software must work in an interconnected and smooth manner.
  • These software products may have integration issues, and can become major hurdles for your staff when they use the modules
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • Many times, a software vendor could simply be offering you a Front Office Module.
  • you will have to additionally invest in purchasing, licensing and maintaining the back-end modules.
  • investing in the right hotel software is a complex task and most hotels spend months deliberating on their investment.
  • Numerous integrations also means you could spend long hours networking and interacting with multiple vendors.
  • this could get restrictive and influence your other partnerships.
  • review about your potential software vendor is their experience in the industry
  • your hotel runs a mission-critical operation.
  • The hotel software market is full of options, and each vendor claims his software is the best. However investing in the right hotel software is a complex task and most hotels spend months deliberating on their investment. Unfortunately, hoteliers excel at their core skill, delivering to guests a world-class hospitality experience, and sometimes get ‘talked’ into making a wrong decision on the software they adopt.
  •
The right property management system plays a key roles in the success of any hotel. Property management systems store guests' information which helps make for a pleasurable stay at the hotel. On the back end having the proper property management system can be key tool in making a successful stay at the hotel. The front end has software that handles the point of sale, account receivable, banquets, conferences, restaurant, housekeeping, inventory, payroll, among other apps and modules that connect to make the hotel run successful smooth. The information that is stored in these systems generate reports that the hotel can review for decision making. Much like other software, technology can be exhausting at times when it doesn't do what we want it to do. The hotel software market is full of many different option management can choose do off with. A few things a hotel should consider when choosing software should be: How many modules will your new hotel software offer? Does your new property management system have third party products merged into it? Is your hotel software compatible with third party software? Does your property management system help you enhance revenue? Considering all these questions while choosing a new property management system can help management choose the best system that will be most beneficial for the hotel. As someone who has been part of choosing a PMS it is very important to consider everything. Every vendor tells you why theirs is the best. It takes a lot of time to review everything and determine what system will work best for the company. I think where companies go wrong when getting a new system is training. The companies I've worked for often do very little training. I think lack of training for employees contributes to employees not using systems correctly and to full capacity which causes errors in reports. As a sales director, I often read reports and knew the information wasn't correct and it was due to input error. This

Correct, but as well hoteliers would always go for Opera if the company does not have a signed deal with a PMS company to use their services worldwide. For example, Starwood in America have a signed deal with Galaxy systems, however Starwood in Asia Pacific go with Opera. This is just due to the fact that Galaxy is still facing some issue in terms of getting the system in different languages. But in general, Opera is preferred by any hotel company. Recently the Hilton in Japan, has changed their PMS ONQ to Opera.

Property management systems are important in a hotel. They enable to establishment to store information to personalize a guest experience, but they also assist the back-end with point-of-sale, accounts, payroll, restaurant module, ect. The headache is deciding which system is best for your operations. This article list a few helpful questions in order to sort out what system your establishment needs. The first question the article is, "How many modules will your new hotel software offer?". The reason why the author points this out as being important is because some softwares just come with the Front office module. Meaning you will need to invest in another system to accommodate the back-end of the hotel. Then he goes into ask, "Does your new property management system have third party products merged into it?". Some software vendors require smaller companies to merge products to make up their PMS. This can lead to a hassle for the staff and means you could spend long hours needing to interact with multiple vendors rather than just one. Another question the author posses is, "Is your hotel software compatible with third party software?". This question is to double check that the software you plan to integrate is compatible with third party hardware and software. A couple examples are credit card payment gateway and the door locking system. These are all useful questions that a manager can look to in order to help them pick a system.
  •
The main point of this article is to point out key features that you need to consider when you are upgrading your PMS in your hotel. It makes the point that choosing a new PMS is not easy, and it can get very complicated since there are so many on the market. One of the main points the author makes is that you should be looking for a system that has multiple modules, not just a Front Office Module for example. Another point the author makes is that some software companies have other parties involved when establishing their software, this is not a good thing since it may lead to you having to interact with a number of vendors which could take a good amount of time away from you, time that you could be using interacting with guests or doing a more qualitative time consuming task. You also want to make sure that your new potential software is compatible with third party software. "Review this list carefully to ensure the software you are buying is compatible with a large number of third party hardware, if not, this could get restrictive and influence your other partnerships". Lastly, the article discusses how you should check with the experience in the industry of software companies you are considering. Since your hotel runs a "mission-critical operation" you want to make sure that your PMS will indeed help stick with the mission of helping to enhance your revenue. I believe that these are great tips to follow by when looking to incorporate a new PMS, I also think the security of your new software should be added to the list as well; how secure is it from hackers?
  •
This article was very interesting and it gives advice to any person thinking about opening a hotel in what software you can use. A hotel software is extremely important because that has all the guest information and store there experience that they had at the hotel. You have to see what software you want to implement when changing the hotel management system or property management system you need to know who is selling it to you and what is included in the software. If you are just getting a new system, you have to make sure that everything you already have is included and more. You also have to make sure that the software you get is compatible with a third party hardware. A hotel software system can make you or break you in a hotel. You really have to know the vendor that is selling you the software and make sure that they have experience with the software. The better the software that you have in the hotel, the smoother the hotel will run.

This article contains information about the expected event trends this year that will possibly increase ROI. The list of expected trends all surrounded the technological advancements that are enhancing event planning. The advancements include the increased use of smartphones to conduct business. This technological increase will also reduce company costs. It is also expected to improve company value. I agree with technology improving company value. Technology is advancing majorly throughout the world. It is also making it easier for companies and consumers to interact. Smartphones, alone, are very popular in today's economy and are a great example of technological advancement. Being that people already use their smartphones to check emails, save event dates and contact other people (whether over the phone or by video), conducting business will be somewhat simple to adapt to. Increasing company technology to reduce costs is a good move. However, the companies should keep in mind that losing one cost will only open the door for another one. When dealing with technology, there are always risks (usually malfunction risks). So, companies should keep in mind that there is a possibility that expenses will incur for the technological maintenance that will be needed to keep the technology operating.

Technology: The Newest Weapon in Event Planning | Emergency Management content from EHS... - 2 views

  • Technology, if used correctly, can assist in the automation of business processes (thus freeing precious resources), provide situational awareness for all agencies involved and provide real-time information to users. This article reviews the uses and benefits of one such technology solution, E-Sponder, at two major events (The 2004 Presidential Debates held at Washington University in St. Louis and the 2005 Super Bowl held in Jacksonville, Fla.) as well as provides guidelines when choosing a technology solution.
  • Gragnani and Smiley immediately saw that E-Sponder – a collaboration and information-sharing portal developed by Convergence Communications based upon Microsoft Office Professional Enterprise Edition 2003 technologies – offered the potential for real-time collaboration because it delivers collaboration functions such as e-mail, forums, calendars, shared documents, task lists and messaging that allow stakeholders to efficiently work together remotely. Gragnani and Smiley knew that Convergence would be willing to work with them to customize the solution to accommodate their changing needs.
  • Out of this need for heightened security stems a dichotomy between necessity and reality. The necessity of an organization to provide heightened security is oftentimes at odds with the reality of the entity's ability to furnish the needed man-power and absorb the costs associated with hosting a large-scale event. All too often, a city or county is given the designation as a lead agency to provide security for an event, but is given little-to-no financial assistance to make certain that the event takes place without a serious threat to the public.

  • Technology, if used correctly, can assist in the automation of business processes (thus freeing precious resources), provide situational awareness for all agencies involved and provide real-time information to users.
  • If the decision is made to work with a technology solution to assist in securing your event, it is important to remember a few key points: n Do your homework: investigate, prepare and implement. Take time to assess your exact deliverables and what you are going to be held accountable for. Assessing your deliverables and requirements goes beyond the obvious: How are you going to manage and archive e-mails, meetings, conversations, images and plans? Implementation of the correct technology solution will assist you in this process and keep your staff free from much of the administrative burdens found in planning large-scale events. n Don't just choose technology, choose a technology partner. Planning an event is a dynamic task. Make certain that the company you choose is willing to understand your business processes and work with you to marry technology with your most challenging issues. n Don't learn your technology during a crisis. Pick a technology solution that is extremely user friendly. As the dynamics of an event change, you may need to collaborate with a community of users you did not anticipate in your initial planning. These new users will need to quickly learn and adapt to your communication solution. When securing an event, everyone is working toward the same goal: An event where the public does not think twice about security. The right technology solution can quickly put more accurate information in the hands of those who need it, and allow people to focus on their mission, not on paperwork.
  •
This article talks about how events have changed throughout the years and especially because of 9/11. before this day the event planners and safety personel were focus on traffic control but now it is more safety concerns and the prevention of terrorist attacks. It discusses how and why technology can help them and shows many different examples that were real life like the super bowl an the presidential debates. it also stresses how important it is to know the technology and not to learn it in a crisis. Also it helps in choosing what technology to use. There are so many options out there and there is definitely a way to do all this without technology but technology can help and make it a lot safer and more effective.
  •
Events can be successfully planned, executed and reviewed without the use of technology. However, there are affordable technology solutions that can ease the burden and provide enhanced situational awareness during an event. And the new high tech, E-Sponder, really assist in the automation of business processes, expecially the event planning. E-Sponder was used to automate many critical business processes during the debate and consequently provided real-time information sharing and reduced resolution time for unplanned events. In addition, it gave complete situational awareness both inside and outside the command center to all of those involved in securing the debate activities.

Advantages of Cloud Computing for the Hotel Industry - 0 views

  • Is cloud computing secure? If you invest in a cloud Hotel Property Management System (PMS), then you won’t need to store any data onsite; it simply resides on a server elsewhere (it could even be in another country)

If you use a cloud Hotel Property Management System, you won't have to store any data on site (PMS). Instead, it will be kept on a different server (it could even be in another country). It is undeniable that times are changing. Older, on-premise hotel PMS solutions are being transferred to cloud computing, which is helping to improve basic, but crucial, hotel operational circumstances like a check-in or check-out line. Cloud computing requires a strong Internet connection and a device of your choice. Because cloud applications are so versatile, you can use your cellular-enabled tablet to run your reception desk from the palm of your hand even if your main Internet connection is down. Cloud computing allows you to operate from anywhere, at any time, in a secure environment, all while reducing IT infrastructure and continuing IT costs. In today's connected world, cloud computing is incredibly dependable.

Changing to a cloud PMS isn't as difficult as you would imagine. A comprehensive import of your data may be achievable depending on the system you're transferring from, and the ease with which such systems can be learned assures that staff adoption is unlikely to cause any problems or service interruptions. Finally, and perhaps most critically, one of the most major benefits of cloud computing is that it takes far less time to make adjustments. It's not unusual to have virtually 100% uptime, allowing you to take use of the best features and benefits your PMS supplier has to offer without having to deal with lengthy, inconvenient update routines.

Future of Global Distribution for Airline Travel - 1 views

  • Imagine if every airline used a separate reservation system to distribute flight information, instead of the familiar global distribution systems (GDS) in place now
  • As travel professionals are aware, Southwest Airlines are not available in most systems for booking reservations. However, they do not negotiate with distribution companies to sell their product.
  • Then travel companies would be charged to have the Direct Connect system in the long run, thus paying for the opportunity to sell American flights.

  • American suggests that distribution companies begin using Direct Connect, powered by Farelogix. Travel professionals view this alternative concept as having to use a separate system for American Airlines reservations, possibly complimentary on a trial basis to the travel management company.
  • This may be the biggest travel industry news in the United States and beyond, since the deletion of travel agency commissions. There is also the possibility that more consumers will begin relying on travel agents to locate the best airfares.
  • They suggest it will make ancillary fees, such as priority seat and meal fees easier to track for business travel.
  • Imagine if every airline used a separate reservation system to distribute flight information, instead of the familiar global distribution systems (GDS) in place now. Individuals and travel professionals would have to compare flight costs on every reservation website or call each airline separately.
  • If every airline decides to utilize a different system and charge for their product to be sold, then travel companies may have to forward their costs to travelers, hence driving up the price of airfares.
  • American Airlines airfares can no longer be found on Expedia or Orbitz websites, or any site powered by Orbitz. These are two of many airline distribution sites that consumers can compare and book flights they choose. Each did not come to an agreement with American Airlines for a new contract to distribute American Airlines' product.
  • The contracts for the global distribution systems, Worldspan and Sabre, will be up for renewal soon this year. What will happen with American flights and air fares in those systems? Will American not be offered in those systems as well, if an agreement cannot be made? What happens if other airlines decide to join with American? This may be the biggest travel industry news in the United States and beyond, since the deletion of travel agency commissions.
  • Though this is a major obstacle for travel agencies and other travel management companies, travel agencies, being fearful of the outcome for consumers, are ready to stand their ground and protect themselves and consumers alike.
  • As travel professionals are aware, Southwest Airlines are not available in most systems for booking reservations. However, they do not negotiate with distribution companies to sell their product. For the most part, Southwest is self-contained and stands on their own, as far as distribution methods go.

It appears that American Airline is about to remove itself from the tradition global distribution system and introduce its own distribution system. American Airlines is advocating for distribution companies to utilize AA direct connect which is a direct link into AA's host reservations system. Currently American Airlines fares are no longer available on Expedia or Orbitz sites. This is because no contractual agreement was reached for the distribution of AA products. Travel professionals are waiting to see the result of this bold move by American as this has great implication for the future of airline distribution systems. If American Airlines pulls away from the mainstream GDS, consumers and travel specialist alike will be faced with the inconvenience of going to a separate reservations system to compare fares. Although travel professionals are now urged to use direct connect on a trial basis, the general feeling is that eventually they will be charged to sell American Airline flights. To defend this move American Airline is only saying that direct connect will make it easier for them to tract ancillary fees like priority seating. It was noted in the article that Southwest Airline for the most part is a stand alone reservations system but they do not negotiate with the GDS companies to sell their flights. It is therefore quite evident that this move by American is really to reduce expenditure by eliminating the middle GDS companies while increasing revenue by charging travel partners for utilizing direct connect. American Airlines clearly wants to globally control their distribution system and maximize revenues. Contract renewal for both world span and sabre are due and the experts are waiting to see if American will renew with them. Sabre is owned by American Airlines so its a wait and see game to see how all this will be panned out. The real problem for the consumers and travel specialists are that if other airlines are to follow this move by American the tra

Global distribution systems (GDS) are used within the travel industry for the booking of flights a service that was once performed by travel agents. With the introduction of GDS many jobs were loss. Because GDS are contracted services with World- span and Sabre renewal and renegotiation of contracts may pose a problem. There are many pros and cons to the GDS for consumers such as booking of flights anytime and the loss of personal relations with the travel agents. According to Bonnie Burgess, the renewal of the GDS with world-span and Sabre is eminent which might create a problem for consumes if the negotiation falls apart. There was a similar situation Direct TV and the provider of many channels to Direct TV when they could not come an agreement, and, in the final analysis the consumers were the ones who suffered. Southwest and American airlines are two airlines who defended why they felt that booking directly at the website is the best options for travelers. The conclusion, is that there are advantages and disadvantages to the GDS. one of the overarching disadvantage is when there are difficulties with meeting of the minds in contractual negotiations.

The article highlighted reports how hard would be for travel agents to work without and Global Distribution System due to difficulty to generate price comparison reports to customers. It is also mentioned that American Airlines Airfares are no longer posted to the two majot websites for price comparison (Expedia and Orbitz). American Airlines will be using another website called Direct Connect which will be complimentary on a trial basis. In order to have full access, customers or travel agents would have pay for a membership. The process will have a higher cost and will be more time consuming. Southwest Airlines is acting the same way. The intention is to avoid comparison and encourage direct booking with the airlines. This difficulties presented by hotels and airlines may require more usage of a travel agent to do research for consumers. GDS's contracts are up for renewal and the concern is whether or not airlines will get into an agreement where rates will still be posted on the system avoiding several searches in multiple sources.
  •
This article explains the distribution route American Airlines is taking to sell their flights. Due to not seeing eye to eye with the two most probably used websites for travel, Expedia and Orbitz, American has now taken their products away from both airline distribution sites. American suggest that all travel agencies and distribution companies begin using Direct Connect, which is a system for only American Airlines flights. If this would happen, travel agencies and companies will then begin having to pay for the system in order to sell Americans flights. At the moment you can still book flights through other distribution sites, but until when will that be? They already stopped Orbitz and Expedia, what's not to stop the others. The future of global distribution systems will be up in the air if all airlines choose to sell their own systems to be able to sell reservations. The only positive that was pointed out in this article was that if this system takes over, then more consumers will have to go back to using travel agents to secure the best reservations for flights and such.

With the contracts for major global systems, Worldspan and Sabre, being up for renewal in the near future, this article analyses the possible outcomes for airlines, and alternatives should they choose not to forgo continuing use of GDS

Survey Reveals the Impact of User-Generated Review Sites on Dining Decisions | News | H... - 0 views

Another interesting article that we all can relate to. A study recently had results disclosed where 500 people were surveyed into how they decide on where to eat out and how internet sites are influencing decisions. To start off, about 50% of people who go out to eat refer to a friend before making a decision on where to eat. As it relates to our class, before choosing a place to eat, 27.7% of consumers use a user generated review site and 27% use the actual restaurant's website. Consumers preferred to use user friendly websites the most and sometimes even referred to blogs for opinions. Google was actually cited as the third most utilized website for those seeking a second opinion with 16.5%. I thought the most interesting fact was that Food Network actually ranked on the list to getting some more insight on where to eat, with 1.7% of consumers using that website. Next time you are going out to eat somewhere, think about if you use websites or apps to assist you in making the decision. I guess you can make a review site about anything.

Google Hotel Finder distances itself from Hipmunk with transit data | Tnooz - 0 views

  •
Google Transit, which uses data from over 500 global markets' transportation systems, is partnering up with Google Hotel Finder to make tourists' stays more time efficient. Google Hotel Finder added a new filter that shows consumers the maximum travel time from any point of interest to their hotel. It has placed a 20 minute default distance from point to point. Tourists can type a specific attraction, like Buckingham Palace, and it will show you hotels within 20 minutes of it. Google also allows you to choose the transit time; the smaller the time the smaller number of hotels within the range. Moreover, Google Hotel Finder can also search for hotels in selected areas for popular city locations. Prior to this, Google had Google Calendar, which allowed business consumers to choose hotels based on travel distance to their business meetings. Overall, Google's Hotel Finder targets both the leisure and business consumers. As a consumer searching for hotels in unfamiliar areas, this feature would be really beneficial because it allows me to plan my stay more accordingly. Usually, consumers choose a hotel based on travel time from the main points of interests, whether they are attractions or business meetings. Google Hotel Finder will now share this information with consumers before they actually even choose a hotel. I have a strong inclination that this type of consumer technology will drive hotels to use travel times as advertising tools when they use Google as an advertising medium.

Selecting a Hospitality Call Accounting System - 1 views

  • The trick to selecting a hospitality call accounting system is to know how to eliminate unsuitable options quickly by asking the right questions.
  • The trick to selecting a hospitality call accounting system is to know how to eliminate unsuitable options quickly by asking the right questions. There's no shortage of supply just suitable solutions. Different properties have different requirements and we have yet to find a solution that fits every type of property from a hotel chain through to a single location motel. The best way to choose between the dozens of call accounting systems is to have a checklist identifying requirements in descending order from mandatory through to "nice to have." If a short-listed candidate doesn't satisfy a critical requirement waste no more time, move onto the next and repeat the cycle. The objective is to identify one or more call accounting systems that satisfy all mandatory requirements. It's only at that stage that cost should be considered. Cost is irrelevant if a "solution" can't do the job. If you're lucky enough to find two or more options that are fully compliant then cost becomes the final consideration.

This article introduces brief suggestions about how to select a hospitality call accounting system.
