This article makes me very proud, as I work for 1 Hotel South Beach and know that this Hotel definitely practices what they preach. They have been awarded LEED Silver (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) which was developed by the U.S. Green Council (USGBC). The hotel has a very unique and simple design. The guest rooms are designed with left over construction materials from its surrounding resources. The use of wood, natural material, leather, and stone, silk, linen, cotton are what make our facility so earthy and green. 1 Hotel hopes to start a trend in the Hotel industry by following the sustainable practices that our Hotel makes. This article is about The Albion Hotel in Miami Beach. It talks about how they were losing business due to their outdated PBX (Private Branch Exchange) phone system. It was not reliable. This shows the benefits of cloud computing!

In the hotel world, as technology is ever evolving and change it is most times necessary to keep up with change. This hotel was at least 20 years old in the business what worked back then to five years ago even one year ago may not work today. Granted not all hotels need to be tech savvy but if that's the majority of their clientele due to their location they may want to keep up to date to ensure that they are meeting their customers needs.

First Hotel in U.S. to Recycle All Soaps - 0 views

  •
Laguna Beach welcomes more than 6 million visitors annually to its sandy shores. Now visitors who stay in the beachside city's 22 hotels and lodging establishments will be inadvertent participants in a citywide effort to recycle all of the soaps, shampoos, hair conditioners, lotions and bath gels that are left over after a night's stay. Starting Monday, Laguna Beach becomes the first city in the nation to have all of its hotel properties with more than 20 rooms participate in Clean the World -- a Florida-based nonprofit that provides recycled hotel soaps and hygiene products to those in need. Montage Laguna Beach, Pacific Edge Hotel and Best Western Laguna Brisas are among the 18 participating hotels, along with four of the city's six bed and breakfasts, for a total of 1,229 rooms. In an average year, with an estimated 75% occupancy rate, Laguna Beach hotels generate 336,000 bars of soap and a slightly lesser number of shampoo, conditioner, bath gel and lotion bottles, all of which were previously thrown in the trash. Working with Clean the World, those hygiene products will be reclaimed by the housekeeping staff and set aside in a separate receptacle to be shipped to a Las Vegas processing facility. The bars of soap are cleaned of hair and paper, sterilized, ground into pellets and pressed into new bars of soap that are distributed to non-governmental organizations in 45 countries that do not have ready access to soap. The bottled amenities are likewise reclaimed. If they're full, the bottles' exteriors are sterilized and redistributed to homeless shelters and soup kitchens inside the U.S. If the bottles are 25% empty, the plastic is recycled or potentially upcycled for use in other products. Founded in 2009, Clean the World has 1,200 partner hotels across the U.S. and Canada, 126 of which are in California, including the Disneyland Hotel, Disney's Grand Californian Resort & Spa and Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel in Anaheim. Luxury and sustainability coexist at Breakers Palm Beach - 0 views

  • Several of the recycling initiatives are housed in the delivery area, where you can see the following not-so-glamorous but significant processes:
  • Perhaps the crown jewel of the hotel’s sustainability program is an aerobic composter, which is housed in the same corner as the water treatment facility.
  • Hawkins also co-founded Localecopia, an independent non-profit organization that encourages local sustainable business and food sourcing by serving as a “matchmaker” between food producers and chefs, restaurateurs and hospitality operators.
  •
The article introduced the recycling initiatives of the Palm Beach. Aluminium collection, recycling of plastic and glass; make package of cardboard for easy sold; collecting office paper for newspaper manufacturing; prevent waste cooking oil to make bio diesel fuel; using drought-tolerant vegetation to replace exotic flora; hotels` sustainability program in an aerobic composter, and "matchmaker".

Yes a very good article. I wish more would take this seriously. When i was at the St Regis Hotels, we use to do the same thing of recycling initiatives.

The Ins and Outs for Travel Agents in Planning Billionaires' Honeymoons – Skift - 1 views

  •
Summer is wedding season. Celebrities aren't the only one spending a ton of money willing to spend on their honeymoons. Billionaires have honeymoons almost as extravagant as their wedding itself. With all that money, but tends to be complicated. Ovation Vacations have become experts at planning honeymoons for billionaires. This company is known for planning leisure travel consulting for 'ultra-high net worth' people. This team consists of 30 employees which plan nearly 200 honeymoons per year, averaging about $50,000 each trip. This results in $1 million in revenue per month. The CEO is considered to be the Olivia Pope of the travel industry. An interesting request of travelers who book with Ovation is that they like specific cuts of meat during traveling. It's very common to have meat sent from the U.S. to where ever they are vacationing. This is very interesting to me because you would expect one of the main attractions of traveling is to try new cuisines. Seems a little over the top. It gets a little more extreme -- one guest even requested an al dente pasta cooked for a certain amount of minutes. A celebrity requested dragon fruit for their "pink smoothie". This gets tricky when other countries have rules when it comes to importation. JLo wanted Ovation to pick our green M&Ms for her. In addition, another guest wanted a crate of Fiji water bottles delivered nightly. It gets even better, one guest paid $40,000 for her 5-night stay in order to have her sink filled 7 inches in order to not bend over to wash their face. Another husband spent $80,000 to have a yacht carpeted so his wife can wear her stilettos instead of being barefoot. Sometimes inevitable things happen such as natural disasters. Not a problem for Ovation. They spend $50,000 for one couple to still enjoy the beach, which had been destroyed due to weather. What they did was hire a truck to move sand from one part of the island to the other for them to enjoy a private beach. Something simple, yet

Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa installs INNCOM | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • When you have a building of this size and age, energy conservation is critical. With the cost of some of the building management solutions on the market, we couldn't afford to do a property-wide network overhaul. With INNCOM's wireless DMN, however, we were able to quickly add four wireless sensors into each guestroom for each of our four communication points (HVAC, lighting, thermostat and door controls) and a signal sent from each unit travels wirelessly through the building to communicate with the server. It works great."
    • Gerson Dias

As more and more hotels face the challenge of dealing with rising energy costs, we are confident that they will find INNCOM's Deep Mesh Network architecture to be an affordable solution for updating their network infrastructure.
  •
INNCOM is the global hospitality-industry leader in advanced energy-management and Integrated Room Automation Systems (IRAS) for hotels and resorts. Furthermore, INNCOM is considered to be a pioneer in wireless environment installation with extensive experience in networking guestroom equipment and 25 years of tradition. INNCOM invented a Deep Mesh Network which uses advanced radio frequency technology to provide better control and monitoring over a hotel's HVAC, lighting and other equipment with the goals of reducing energy consumption and simultaneously improving the guest experience. In case of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, it had upgraded its guestroom temperature control system to a networked energy management system utilizing the Deep Mesh Network (DMN) architecture from INNCOM, and since the 1,310-room property converted to this robust wireless environment (nearly eight months ago), energy consumption has dropped by 21 percent without requiring the 40-year-old facility to undergo an extensive or costly installation effort. After all, energy conservation is not just a question of saving money, but saving something that is home to us all: the earth.

Highlights: Several of the recycling initiatives are housed in the delivery area, where you can see the following not-so-glamorous but significant processes: -The collection of aluminum, plastic and glass for recycling. -Baling cardboard so it can be hauled and sold. -The collection of office paper to be sold for newspaper manufacturing. -The containment of waste cooking oil to be sold to make biodiesel fuel. My Descriptions: The author had a back-of-the-house tour of this hotel in the 140 acres of Palm Beach island, and she regard it eco-tourism. She found this hotel separate different trash in different box, and then sell this recycling materials to local supplies. One special thing in this hotel is that Native drought-tolerant vegetation has replaced more exotic flora. This hotel also has an organic and vegetable garden providing its restaurant with fresh organic produce. The reverse-osmosis plant and 1,100-foot-deep well treats unusable salt water to be used for irrigation of The Ocean Golf Course. It is really a concrete example of a hotel present its green initiatives. This idea can be widely used in hotel landscaping and purchasing.

  • This, combined with a comprehensive recycling and composting program that includes E-waste items such as batteries, computers, telephones, radios and other electronics, yields a 92% waste diversion rate.
  • These efforts to protect the environment extend beyond the hotel, as employee teams support the California Coastal Commission and participate in Heal the Bay beach clean-ups.
  •
The hundred year old, Dorchester Collection's Beverly Hills Hotel participates in various green initiatives within the hotel as well as around the world. The hotel purchases only green products, donates partially used toilet paper, donates soap and amenities to local and global shelters and organizations. Most importantly they participate in proper e-waste of electronics.  I think this Beverly Hill Hotel sets a great standard for all hotels. Not only does their hotel practice green initiatives but they take that extra step and their employees participate in beach clean ups.

Naples Grande Beach Resort (a personal competitor for my property) has upgrades its PBX system and chosen Cloud5, a cloud based system that allows for on-going integration that does not degrade over time. As stated in the article, "With Cloud5's hosted solution, our systems are always current with the latest software functionality, without the need to purchase future expensive upgrades or interrupt hotel operations. We're always operating with the most advanced features that allow us to deliver fast, reliable guest service across our expansive resort. This upgrade has even reduced monthly telecommunications expenses which adds value directly to our bottom-line.". This very statement intrigued me as I recall when my property transitioned to HotSOS for our PBX software. Like most other softwares, integration with Opera our rooms system was a challenge and it was not without hiccup and initial challenges. Because it is not cloud based, the property does need to purchase upgrades and re-install in individual areas throughout the property. Our Sales team does however, work off an internet based software - Salesforce - and it allows not only for easier and seamless integration, but it also allows us to access it from home. It will be interesting to see how Cloud5 changes the guest experience for those at Naples Grande and how many other companies will begin moving towards this format of system.

COVID-19 Sanitization and Social Distancing Technology for Hotels - 0 views

  •
New technologies are helping hotels with ways to open up after Covid-19: Tablets with thermal imaging cameras, UV light sanitizers that guests walk-through, touchless F & B ordering & touchless tipping apps, and social distancing for pools & beaches. All of these innovative ideas and many more will be needed if there is to be a reopening of hotels and if the reopenings will lead to a sustained resurgence in room occupancy. Guests will expect hotels to offer them reasonable health safety measures and hopefully, these new technologies will help them do just that.
